The Bombay is a people-oriented domestic cat bred for a distinctive look: a muscular build, a sleek black coat and copper-to-gold eyes. Bombays are often described as affectionate and playful, but temperament varies from cat to cat. Their short coat is fairly easy to care for; prospective owners should also ask about heart-health screening, especially hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).
What is a Bombay cat?
The Bombay is a pedigreed cat breed developed to resemble a miniature black panther. The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) credits Kentucky breeder Nikki Horner with starting the project in 1966, crossing a black American Shorthair male with a Burmese female. The CFA accepted the breed for registration in 1970, and it reached CFA championship status in 1976. The International Cat Association (TICA) records a separate milestone: acceptance for championship competition in June 1979. These are different registry events, not competing dates for one recognition.
A black coat alone does not make a cat a Bombay. The breed’s identity rests on documented ancestry and pedigree as well as its standard appearance; a cat’s looks cannot establish its breed history.
What does a Bombay cat look like?
In the CFA and TICA standards, the Bombay is medium-sized, muscular and well-balanced, with a rounded head and a short, close-lying black coat that has a satin-like gloss. Its eyes range from gold to copper; TICA describes the ideal color as like a “new copper penny.” The nose leather and paw pads are black.
#1 Best Overall
The standard describes an ideal for pedigreed cats, not a checklist that can confirm the ancestry of an unpedigreed cat. CFA’s standard also penalizes excessive ranginess or compactness and disqualifies features including green eyes, coat spots or lockets, and an abnormal or kinked tail.
Are Bombay cats affectionate and social?
CFA and TICA describe Bombays as outgoing, affectionate, playful and interested in people. They may enjoy games and interactive toys, and can adapt to apartment living when their needs for attention, play and enrichment are met. CFA notes that they may bond with children and other pets when introduced appropriately.
These are breed tendencies, not guarantees. An individual cat’s behavior also reflects its age, health, socialization and home environment. Give a new cat time to settle in, make introductions to children and other pets gradually, and provide regular opportunities for play and interaction.
How do you care for a Bombay cat?
Grooming
The short coat needs relatively little upkeep, but the registries suggest different brushing schedules. CFA recommends a rubber curry brush two or three times a month to remove loose hair; TICA recommends brushing weekly. A quick bath may suit some Bombays, according to CFA, but bathing is not presented as a routine requirement.

Everyday care and enrichment
TICA’s guidance includes routine cat care: trim nails, clean ears, brush teeth with veterinarian-approved pet toothpaste, provide fresh water and exercise, and offer a scratching pole. Interactive or puzzle toys can provide mental stimulation. These are ordinary care needs rather than special Bombay-only requirements.
What health problems should Bombay owners know about?
CFA notes that some Bombays may have excessively teary eyes. It also reports that hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a common feline heart disease, has been found in the breed. CFA says responsible breeders test their breeding cats to reduce the chance of passing on HCM. TICA recommends echocardiographic screening by a veterinary cardiologist and cautions that HCM may not show up in a cat’s first years of life.
Rank #4
If you are considering a kitten, ask the breeder what screening was done for both parents and request the relevant records. Screening information can help inform a decision, but it cannot establish an individual cat’s future health. For a cat you already own, discuss any concerns or screening questions with your veterinarian; breed information is not a diagnosis.

TICA lists a life expectancy of 12 years or more. PetMD gives a typical range of 9–15 years and says some cats may live longer. These are differently framed estimates, not a promise for an individual cat; lifespan depends on that cat’s health and circumstances.
