The Borzoi is a very large Russian sighthound: calm, affectionate and dignified indoors, but still driven to chase anything that moves. The breed suits households that can provide daily exercise, secure containment, regular coat care and patient training. An unfenced yard or reliable off-leash recall is not enough for this pursuit-bred dog.

What is a Borzoi?

The Borzoi is an elegant, long-coated sighthound from Russia. Unlike scent hounds that follow a nose trail, Borzois were selected to spot and pursue moving game across open ground. The Borzoi Club of America standard describes the original work as “the coursing of wild game on more or less open terrain, relying on sight rather than scent.” That history explains both the breed’s athletic build and its modern safety requirements.

The AKC traces the breed to 17th-century Russia, where Arabian greyhounds were crossed with a thick-coated Russian breed and developed under Russian aristocracy for wolf hunting. The AKC recognized the breed in 1891. The former name “Russian Wolfhound” was replaced by “Borzoi” in 1936.

Size, appearance and physical abilities

Under the luxurious silky coat is an ancient Greyhound type: a deep chest, long legs, flexible spine and streamlined body built for speed rather than bulk. The official type emphasizes functional running gear and a balanced sighthound outline.

Sex Minimum height Typical weight
Male 28 inches 75–105 pounds
Female 26 inches 60–85 pounds

Heights are minimums, not targets for every individual, and healthy weight depends on frame, age and condition. The AKC lists a 9–14-year life expectancy. At full speed, the AKC profile describes a Borzoi at approximately 35–40 miles per hour; this is why roads, open fields and unfenced parks are dangerous places for a loose dog.

Temperament and everyday behavior

At home

Many Borzois are quiet, gentle and affectionate with their people. Their composed, almost catlike manner can make them surprisingly unobtrusive indoors despite their size. They generally prefer respectful companionship to constant high-energy interaction.

Training style

Independence is part of the breed. A Borzoi may understand a cue yet decide that another option is more interesting, so obedience can progress more slowly than with highly biddable breeds. Begin socialization and puppy classes early, use rewards and calm repetition, and keep sessions short enough to remain engaging. Patience and consistency outperform force; rough handling can damage trust and is a poor fit for this sensitive, self-directed dog.

Children, visitors and other dogs

A Borzoi can live successfully with children and other dogs when the individual temperament, introductions and supervision are appropriate. Children should be taught not to climb on, chase or startle a large dog, and interactions should be supervised. Give the dog a quiet retreat and manage greetings rather than expecting the dog to tolerate every approach.

Cats and small pets

Living peacefully with a cat or small animal is not guaranteed. A fast-moving pet can activate the Borzoi’s inherited pursuit response even when the dog is calm indoors. Use careful introductions, physical separation when unsupervised and secure management around any animal the Borzoi might chase. Never treat a history of indoor calm as proof that an outdoor chase will not occur.

Exercise and running safety

Daily activity is essential for physical and behavioral health. Combine purposeful walks with opportunities for controlled, high-speed running in a securely fenced area. Lure coursing, agility, rally and obedience can provide structured outlets while reinforcing communication.

  1. Walk on a leash outside secure containment. Choose equipment that the dog cannot back out of and check its fit regularly.
  2. Provide a genuinely secure run area. Fencing must prevent jumping, squeezing through gaps and digging out; inspect gates and latches.
  3. Allow gradual conditioning. Increase distance and intensity progressively, especially for puppies and adolescents whose bones are still developing.
  4. Scan for triggers. Wildlife, cats, squirrels and running dogs can provoke an instant chase.
  5. Cool down and monitor recovery. Stop for excessive panting, weakness, lameness or unusual behavior and contact a veterinarian when signs are concerning.

The AKC specifically says it is never advisable to let a Borzoi run loose. A recall cue is useful for training and emergencies, but it is not a substitute for a leash or secure fence.

Grooming a Borzoi

The long, silky coat sheds and tangles if neglected. Plan a quick brushing every day or two with a pin brush, slicker brush and/or comb. During the heavier annual shed, increase frequency so loose undercoat does not mat or accumulate around the home.

  • Work through feathering behind the ears, on the legs and around the tail, where knots form readily.
  • Bathe when the coat is dirty or has an odor, using a dog-formulated product and thorough drying.
  • Check ears regularly and keep them dry and clean as advised by your veterinarian.
  • Brush teeth often with veterinary guidance and trim nails regularly.
  • Inspect skin, feet and coat while grooming so new lumps, sores or parasites are noticed early.

A pin brush, slicker brush and comb are the core tools; the right “Borzoi grooming brush” is the one that reaches the coat without scraping the skin and that you will use consistently.

Health planning and veterinary care

Large, deep-chested dogs can develop bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), a sudden, life-threatening stomach emergency. Learn the warning signs—swollen or painful abdomen, repeated unproductive retching, restlessness, weakness or collapse—and seek emergency veterinary care immediately if they appear.

Sighthounds, including Borzois, may be more sensitive to anesthesia. Tell every veterinary team that your dog is a sighthound before sedation or surgery so the clinician can choose an appropriate protocol and monitoring plan.

Area What to discuss
Orthopedic disease Elbow and hip dysplasia and osteochondritis dissecans screening
Eyes Progressive retinal atrophy risk and an ophthalmologist evaluation
Heart Cardiac examination
Thyroid Thyroid evaluation
Genetics DM SOD1A DNA test
Emergency risks Bloat prevention discussion and a plan for rapid emergency transport

These cardiac, ophthalmologist, thyroid and DM SOD1A evaluations are the national breed-club recommendations cited by the AKC. Ask breeders for documented results on the parents and for their approach to updating health information; testing reduces risk but cannot guarantee a disease-free puppy.

Food, growth and bloat precautions

Most Borzois do well on a high-quality commercial food or a home-prepared diet that a veterinarian has reviewed and approved. Match the diet to life stage, and take puppy growth seriously because the breed grows rapidly. Your veterinarian can set portions from body condition rather than relying only on a package chart.

  • Keep fresh water available.
  • Monitor calories and body condition; excess weight stresses a large, long-legged frame.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise immediately before and after meals because of bloat risk.
  • Ask your veterinarian whether meal size, frequency and food presentation should be adjusted for your dog’s history and conformation.

Is a Borzoi a good family dog?

Often, yes—if “family dog” means a calm companion whose adults will supervise children, manage prey drive and provide secure exercise. The breed can be affectionate and peaceful at home, but it is not a carefree off-leash or small-pet choice. Before bringing one home, confirm that you can meet all of these requirements:

  • A securely fenced area or another safe running arrangement
  • Daily walks and activity in addition to free running
  • Leash management everywhere outside secure containment
  • Time for brushing every day or two and heavier seasonal grooming
  • Reward-based training and early socialization
  • A veterinary budget that accounts for large-dog emergencies, screening and possible anesthesia complexity

If those conditions fit your household, the Borzoi’s quiet manners and deep affection can be rewarding. If you need a dog that reliably ignores wildlife, thrives on repetitive drills or can safely roam unfenced, choose a different breed.

Questions to ask before adoption or purchase

  1. Can you see the parents’ health-screening documentation and understand what each result means?
  2. How are puppies socialized to people, handling, household sounds and other dogs?
  3. What containment does the breeder or rescue require, and how is prey drive assessed?
  4. What exercise and grooming routine has the individual dog already experienced?
  5. What veterinary records, diet instructions and emergency contacts will accompany the dog?
