A Shichon is a companion dog created by crossing a Shih Tzu with a Bichon Frise. You may also see the names Zuchon and Teddy Bear dog. The appealing name describes a type of cross, not a separately standardized breed: there is no official Shichon conformation standard controlling its size, coat, face, or temperament.
That matters when choosing one. Two Shichon puppies—even littermates—can mature into dogs with different coat textures, facial structure, energy levels, and grooming needs. Most are affectionate, social, small dogs suited to owners who want a close companion, but they still need daily activity, training, dental care, and frequent coat maintenance.
Shichon characteristics at a glance
| Characteristic | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Parent breeds | Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise |
| Breed status | Mixed-breed designer cross; not an AKC-recognized purebred |
| Adult size | Small and compact; PetMD gives approximately 18 pounds as an upper guide, but there is no binding size limit |
| Coat | Usually low-shedding, with straight, wavy, curly, silky, or mixed texture possible |
| Exercise | Moderate; walks, play, and short training sessions are generally appropriate |
| Grooming | Daily brushing is the safest general schedule; professional grooming often every one to two months |
| Temperament | Typically affectionate, playful, people-oriented, and adaptable when well socialized |
| Estimated lifespan | Often described as similar to the parent breeds; some may live 18 years or more, but this is not a guaranteed range |
These are tendencies rather than promises. A Shichon has no unified registry or long-term breed dataset that makes its adult traits as predictable as those of an established breed.

Appearance and size
Most Shichons are small companion dogs with a rounded, compact appearance. The familiar “teddy bear” look often comes from a soft coat, dark eyes, a short muzzle, and a rounded trim, but not every Shichon will develop that exact combination. Some inherit a more obviously Shih Tzu-like face, while others have a longer Bichon-like muzzle.

PetMD places a full-grown Shichon at approximately 18 pounds or less. Treat that figure as a rough guide, not a guarantee. The parents’ size, generation of the cross, sex, nutrition, and individual genetics all influence the adult dog. A seller using terms such as teacup Shichon is using a marketing label, not referring to an official size variety.
Coat texture is especially variable. A puppy may grow a coat that is:
- straight and silky;
- soft and wavy;
- curly or plush;
- or a combination of textures.
Possible colors include white, cream, tan, apricot, gray, brown, and black, either alone or in combinations. There is no official Shichon color list. Puppy coat and adult coat can also differ, so photographs of a young puppy are a poor guarantee of its mature appearance.

A well-socialized Shichon is usually friendly, affectionate, playful, and strongly interested in its people. Both parent breeds were developed primarily as companion dogs, and many Shichons enjoy sitting beside their owners, joining household activities, and playing indoors as much as taking a walk.
This closeness can be a strength or a challenge. A Shichon is unlikely to thrive with an owner who wants a highly independent dog that can be ignored for most of the day. Long periods without interaction, exercise, or mental stimulation may contribute to nuisance barking, attention-seeking, or destructive behavior.
Individual temperament is shaped by genetics, early handling, socialization, training, and environment. Do not assume that every Shichon will automatically be calm with children, dogs, or strangers. Supervise interactions with young children, and introduce new people, animals, surfaces, sounds, grooming tools, and car travel gradually.
Training and socialization
Begin reward-based training as soon as the puppy comes home. The first 16 weeks are an important socialization period, but socialization does not mean forcing a puppy into frightening situations. Keep experiences brief and positive, and pair unfamiliar sights and sounds with food, play, or praise.

Use small treats, a cheerful marker word, and short sessions. Useful early skills include name recognition, recall, loose-leash walking, handling of paws and ears, settling on a mat, and tolerating brushing. Avoid harsh corrections: they can make a sensitive, people-focused dog worried about training rather than eager to participate.
House-training may be slower than new owners expect. A consistent routine works better than assuming a small dog can hold its bladder for long periods. Take the puppy out after waking, eating, drinking, playing, and sleeping; reward outdoor toileting immediately; and clean indoor accidents with an enzymatic cleaner.
Exercise and enrichment
Shichons generally have moderate exercise needs. They are not endurance dogs, but their small size does not make daily activity optional. A practical routine may include a walk, indoor play, and one or two short training or trick sessions. Food puzzles, sniffing games, hide-and-seek, and learning toy names can provide mental work without requiring strenuous exercise.
Adjust activity to the individual dog, weather, age, fitness, and facial structure. Some Shichons inherit a shortened muzzle from the Shih Tzu parent and may be less tolerant of heat or vigorous exercise. Exercise should stop if the dog is struggling to breathe, repeatedly stopping, becoming weak, or showing signs of overheating.
Persistent noisy breathing is not something to dismiss automatically as normal. Exercise intolerance, regurgitation, fainting, blue-tinged gums, or obvious breathing difficulty require veterinary attention. In an emergency involving severe breathing trouble or collapse, seek immediate veterinary care.
Grooming a Shichon
Low shedding does not mean low maintenance, and it does not make a Shichon allergy-proof. Loose hair may remain caught in the coat rather than falling onto furniture, where it combines with skin flakes and other allergens. People with allergies should spend time with the individual dog before committing to adoption.
Daily brushing is the safest general recommendation. Work in sections down to the skin rather than brushing only the visible surface. Pay particular attention to the ears, armpits, collar area, belly, legs, and around the tail, where friction and moisture encourage mats. A shorter clip can reduce the amount of brushing, but it does not remove the need for coat care.

Many Shichons need a professional groom approximately every one to two months. The interval depends on coat length, texture, growth rate, bathing routine, and the owner’s ability to brush thoroughly. Mats can trap moisture, dirt, and irritants against the skin and may contribute to painful irritation or infection. Never cut tight mats out with household scissors close to the skin; ask a groomer or veterinarian for help.
Eyes, ears, skin, and nails
- Eyes: Keep hair trimmed or managed so it does not rub the eyes. Redness, cloudiness, inflammation, discharge, squinting, or a change in vision deserves veterinary evaluation.
- Ears: Floppy ears and ear hair can contribute to ear problems. Ask your veterinarian how often to clean them and whether hair removal is appropriate. Odor, redness, itching, pain, or discharge should be checked.
- Bathing: Use a shampoo made for dogs, rinse thoroughly, and dry the coat completely. Over-bathing can strip skin oils and worsen dryness or itching.
- Nails: Trim nails regularly or have a groomer do it. Long nails can change the way a small dog walks and make handling more difficult.
Dental care is not optional
Small dogs are particularly prone to periodontal disease because their teeth are crowded into a small mouth. Introduce a veterinary-approved dog toothbrush gradually and aim for daily brushing. Start by touching the lips, then briefly rubbing the outer tooth surfaces with dog toothpaste before progressing to a brush.
Dental chews and water additives may have a place in a dental-care plan, but they are not substitutes for brushing or veterinary examinations. Your veterinarian may recommend professional cleaning based on tartar, gum inflammation, pain, loose teeth, or other findings.
Health concerns
A Shichon can inherit conditions associated with either parent breed. This list describes potential risks, not diagnoses that every Shichon will develop.
| Potential concern | Signs owners may notice |
|---|---|
| Patellar luxation | Intermittent limping, skipping, “bunny hopping,” or a popping knee |
| Dental disease | Bad breath, red or bleeding gums, difficulty chewing, loose teeth, or dropping food |
| Eye disease | Cloudiness, squinting, discharge, redness, vision changes, or excessive eye rubbing |
| Hip dysplasia | Stiffness, reluctance to climb or jump, altered gait, or discomfort |
| Bichon-associated disease | Diabetes mellitus and bladder stones are possible inherited risks |
| Brachycephalic airway problems | Noisy breathing, heat or exercise intolerance, regurgitation, fainting, or respiratory distress |
Shih Tzus can be affected by cataracts, dry eye, progressive retinal atrophy, and other eye abnormalities. Bichon Frises can be affected by eye disease as well as patellar, hip, diabetes, and bladder-stone concerns. Crossing the breeds does not guarantee that these risks disappear. Maintaining a healthy body condition is particularly important because excess weight can worsen orthopedic and breathing problems.
How long does a Shichon live?
There is no precise, universally established Shichon lifespan statistic. PetMD cites approximately 10–18 years for Shih Tzus and 14–15 years for Bichon Frises, and notes that some Shichons may live 18 years or more. These should be treated as estimates, not a promise for an individual dog.
Preventive veterinary care, dental care, appropriate nutrition, weight control, safe exercise, and early investigation of symptoms all influence a dog’s chances of a longer, healthier life.

Feeding
Feed a complete and balanced food appropriate for the dog’s life stage, size, and health history. Look for a nutritional adequacy statement showing that the food meets AAFCO standards, and ask your veterinarian to help select a diet if the dog has dental, digestive, weight, or other medical concerns.
Shichon puppies may need three or four meals per day. Adults are commonly fed two or three meals, depending on age, size, activity, health, and veterinary advice. Do not rely on a universal “cup per day” figure: calorie density differs between foods, and two dogs of the same weight may need different amounts.

Use body condition—not begging—as the main guide. Treats should provide no more than 10% of daily calories. Weigh a small dog’s food with a kitchen scale when accurate portion control is needed, and reduce meal portions when training treats are substantial.
Finding a responsible Shichon breeder
Since there is no Shichon-specific AKC breed standard or parent-club health-testing protocol, investigate the Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise parents separately. A breeder’s statement that the parents are “vet checked,” “healthy,” or “DNA tested” is not enough. Ask which tests were performed, by whom, and for the registered names or numbers needed to verify the results.
Useful screening areas include:
- Bichon Frise parent: eye, hip, and patella evaluations are identified as minimum screening areas by Bichon health guidance from the AKC and Bichon Frise Club of America.
- Shih Tzu parent: ask about hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and eye evaluations, including relevant eye abnormalities identified by the AKC.
- Both parents: request actual certificates or searchable records rather than a verbal summary.
The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals’ public database can help you research prospective parents and relatives. OFA explains that its CHIC recommendations are primary screening tests developed with participating parent clubs, not a guarantee that every possible disease has been ruled out. If a dog is absent from the database, OFA says it is reasonable to assume the dog has not been screened by OFA or has undisclosed abnormal results; ask the breeder to explain and document the situation.
A careful breeder should also let you see where the puppies are raised, explain the parents’ temperaments, provide veterinary records, answer questions without pressure, and use a contract that describes return or rehoming responsibilities. Be cautious of sellers promising a guaranteed teddy-bear appearance, “zero shedding,” perfect health, or a tiny “teacup” adult size.

A Shichon may suit someone who wants a small, interactive companion and is prepared to brush the coat, arrange regular grooming, provide daily engagement, and maintain dental care. Apartment living can work when the dog receives walks, play, training, and company. Families and first-time owners may also find the breed type manageable, provided they choose an individual with a suitable temperament and commit to training.

It may be a poor match if you want a dog that can be left alone for most of the day, dislike grooming expenses, or expect a completely predictable adult size and appearance. If you live somewhere hot or plan strenuous outdoor exercise, pay close attention to muzzle length and breathing ability before choosing a puppy.
Common claims to question
- “Hypoallergenic”: No dog is guaranteed allergy-free, and a low-shedding Shichon still produces allergens.
- “Does not shed”: Individual coat types vary, and loose hair can remain trapped in the coat.
- “Always easy to housebreak”: Training progress differs between dogs and depends on consistency.
- “A mix cannot have breathing problems”: A Shichon can inherit short-faced anatomy from the Shih Tzu parent.
- “Designer mixes are automatically healthier”: Health depends on the individual parents, screening, breeding choices, and lifelong care.
- “Teacup” is an official category: It is a sales term, not a standardized Shichon size classification.
FAQ
Is a Shichon a real breed?
A Shichon is a recognized type of mixed-breed cross between a Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise, but it is not a separately standardized purebred breed. It cannot receive full AKC breed registration or compete in AKC conformation as a recognized breed. Mixed-breed dogs can enroll in the AKC Canine Partners program and participate in many companion and performance activities.
How big does a Shichon get?
Shichons are generally small dogs. PetMD gives approximately 18 pounds as a full-grown maximum guide, but there is no binding Shichon size standard, so adult size can vary according to the parents and the individual dog.
Recommended Free Tools
Do Shichons shed?
They are generally low-shedding, but they do not necessarily shed nothing. Loose hair can remain caught in the coat, which also increases the risk of mats. Low shedding does not mean allergy-proof.
How often should a Shichon be groomed?
Brush most Shichons daily and arrange professional grooming approximately every one to two months. A short clip can reduce brushing time, but coat texture, length, and matting speed determine the actual schedule.
Are Shichons good family dogs?
A well-socialized Shichon may be affectionate and adaptable in a family home, but suitability depends on the individual dog, training, socialization, and supervision. Young children should not be left unsupervised with any small dog.
Can Shichons have breathing problems?
Yes. A Shichon that inherits a shortened muzzle may develop brachycephalic airway problems. Exercise or heat intolerance, severe respiratory noise, fainting, blue-tinged gums, or breathing difficulty needs prompt veterinary attention.

Shichons can be loving, amusing house companions, but the teddy-bear label should not obscure the practical work involved. Plan for daily interaction, positive training, regular brushing and clipping, daily dental care, weight control, and ongoing veterinary checks. Because the cross has no fixed standard, assess the actual puppy, its parents, and documented health testing rather than buying on appearance or promises of a guaranteed size, coat, or personality.
