No—not reliably. Animals may react to the first seismic waves seconds before people notice stronger shaking, but that means the earthquake has already begun. Reports of animals behaving unusually hours or days beforehand have not established a dependable way to predict when, where, or how strongly an earthquake will strike. Machine-based early-warning systems do not predict quakes either: they detect a rupture underway and can alert some people before stronger shaking reaches them.
Can animals predict earthquakes?
Not in a reliable, repeatable way. A useful earthquake prediction would need to say where and when a quake will occur and how large it will be. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) says no scientist has reliably predicted a major earthquake. Its guidance on animal behavior says that consistent, reliable behavior before seismic events—and a mechanism explaining how it could work—remains elusive. USGS: Can animals predict earthquakes?
Unusual-behavior stories can be compelling, especially when people remember an animal acting strangely before a quake. But an anecdote alone cannot show that the behavior was a warning: to assess it, researchers also need to know how often the same behavior occurs when no earthquake follows.
Can animals sense an earthquake before humans do?
A few seconds before stronger shaking
Possibly. An earthquake sends out faster, generally less damaging primary (P) waves before the stronger secondary (S) waves and surface waves arrive. Some animals may sense the initial P-wave before a person notices the more forceful shaking. That can give an animal an apparent head start of seconds, but the rupture has already started; this is not a forecast made in advance. USGS: Can animals predict earthquakes?

Hours or days beforehand
A 1981 USGS study by Dale F. Lott, Benjamin L. Hart, and Kenneth L. Verosub reported unusual animal behavior “a few hours to a few days before some, but not most,” earthquakes without known foreshocks. The finding describes reports collected after earthquakes; it does not establish a validated warning interval. The study also found that most individual animals behaved normally, even in cases where unusual behavior had been reported. USGS Open-File Report 81-378 (1981)
The researchers excluded earthquakes with known foreshocks to reduce the chance that animals were responding to earlier shaking. Even so, the reports did not show that unusual behavior reliably preceded most quakes. Longer-term explanations sometimes proposed—such as changes in ground tilt, groundwater, or electrical or magnetic conditions—remain hypotheses. They would require evidence that the changes consistently occur before earthquakes and that animals respond to them.

Are animals better at detecting earthquakes than machines?
There is no direct head-to-head trial in the cited sources that establishes a winner. “Better” depends on what is being detected. An animal reacting to a P-wave and an instrument network sending an alert are both responding to a quake that has begun; neither is shown here to forecast a future rupture. The sources do not provide comparable animal and machine rates for false alarms, missed events, or accuracy.
| Question | Animal behavior | Machine-based early warning |
|---|---|---|
| What can trigger it? | Animals may sense initial seismic motion; proposed longer-term precursors are unconfirmed. | Ground-motion sensors detect seismic waves after a rupture begins. |
| Can it predict a future quake? | No dependable prediction capability has been established. | No. ShakeAlert is an alert about an earthquake already underway. |
| How consistent is it? | The 1981 study reported unusual behavior before some, not most, studied earthquakes; most individual animals behaved normally. | Coverage and warning time depend on system, event, location, and alert threshold. |
| What does the evidence say about errors? | Comparable false-alarm and missed-event rates are not stated in the cited sources. | Comparable false-alarm and missed-event rates are not stated in the cited sources. |
How does earthquake early warning work?
ShakeAlert is a USGS earthquake early-warning system. Its ground-motion sensors and computer algorithms detect an earthquake seconds after it starts, estimate its location and magnitude, and estimate shaking intensity. Because P-waves generally travel faster than more damaging S-waves and surface waves, an alert can reach some people before stronger shaking arrives. USGS: ShakeAlert

The warning is not guaranteed to arrive before shaking. People close to the rupture may have little or no warning because shaking can reach them before the system processes and delivers an alert. Some recipients may get seconds to a few tens of seconds, depending on the event, their location, and the system. The USGS Pacific Northwest warning-time report explains that expected lead time also depends on alert threshold; exceptionally long times apply only to users far from the source in certain scenarios. What should you do with reports of unusual animal behavior?
- Do not treat a pet’s unusual behavior as a dependable earthquake warning or use it to decide that a quake is imminent.
- For immediate alerts, rely on official earthquake early-warning services where available; their regional coverage and delivery options can change.
- Keep normal earthquake preparedness plans in place rather than waiting for an animal or device to predict a quake. Early warning is intended to provide a brief chance to act after an earthquake begins, not to replace preparedness.
