Aquarium-sold wood such as Mopani, Malaysian driftwood and spider wood is a more dependable starting point than an unidentified piece found outdoors.
Which wood is suitable for a fish tank?
Choose wood by its identity, condition and likely effect on your water—not simply by how it looks. Commercial aquarium wood reduces uncertainty about species, though you should still inspect and prepare each piece.
| Wood | What to know | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Mopani | Zoo Med describes its Mopani as dense aquarium wood that generally sinks readily. Like other natural wood, it can release tannins; Zoo Med recommends soaking it with daily water changes to reduce them. Zoo Med Laboratories | Aquariums where a substantial, relatively quick-sinking piece is useful. |
| Malaysian driftwood | Petco lists it as aquarium hardscape and associates it with tannin release. Its effect may suit soft-water or blackwater-style setups, but monitor water parameters for the fish you keep. Petco | Setups where a tea-colored tint is acceptable or desired. |
| Spider wood | Its branching shape offers aquascaping and plant-attachment options. Petco notes that it tends to be light and may require extended soaking before it sinks. Petco | Branching layouts, with a plan to soak or anchor the piece securely. |
| Oak or beech | INJAF discusses these as conditional collection options for hobbyists who can identify dry, sound wood and prepare it correctly; this is not blanket approval for every tree or collection site. INJAF | Experienced collectors able to verify both species and history. |
If you cannot confidently identify a collected piece or rule out chemical treatment and pollution, do not use it. Boiling cannot make unknown wood reliably safe.
What wood should you keep out of an aquarium?
Reject wood that is toxic, treated, decaying or likely contaminated. In particular, do not use:

- Freshly cut, green wood, or pieces with strong sap.
- Painted, stained, pesticide-treated or otherwise chemically treated lumber.
- Wood with mould, rot, fungus or soft, unstable sections.
- Found wood with an unknown pollution history, including pieces from roadsides, industrial areas or uncertain beaches.
Unknown driftwood can also remain buoyant for a long time. Uncertainty about species, treatment or exposure is reason to discard a piece, not a problem that preparation can reliably fix. INJAF and The Spruce Pets discuss collection and wood-safety considerations.
How do you prepare aquarium wood?
- Identify and inspect it. Confirm the species and that it has not been stained, painted or pesticide-treated and has no suspect exposure. Do not proceed with unidentified or questionable wood.
- Scrub it mechanically. Rinse under running water and scrub off loose dirt. Remove mould, fungus, soft or rotten sections, and unstable bark. Do not use soap or household cleaners.
- Soak it in a separate container. Fully submerge the piece in clean water and change the water daily or as practical. Soaking leaches tannins and helps waterlog the wood. Fluval suggests about a week as a starting point, not a universal deadline; some pieces need longer. Fluval
- Boil only if the piece fits safely. Boiling can speed tannin release and provide heat treatment. If the wood is too large, continue soaking it instead. Consider hygiene before using a cooking pot that will later be used for food. Petco
- Check that it will stay put. Add it once waterlogged, or secure it to aquarium-safe slate or rock with an aquarium-safe attachment method. Make sure it cannot shift or fall, injuring fish or trapping livestock.
- Monitor the aquarium after installation. Check pH and other parameters relevant to your livestock. If the tint is unwanted, water changes or activated carbon can reduce discoloration.
Why can wood turn aquarium water brown?
Natural wood releases tannins, which can tint water tea-brown; tannins can also lower pH. Fluval recommends pre-soaking or boiling natural driftwood to reduce discoloration, while Zoo Med notes that natural wood leaches tannins that discolor water and reduce pH. Fluval; Zoo Med Laboratories

A brown tint is not automatically a problem. It may be welcome in a blackwater-style setup, but whether the tannins or any pH change are suitable depends on your fish and other livestock. Monitor the parameters they require rather than assuming all species tolerate the same conditions.
What is the white film on new driftwood?
A white film that appears on newly added driftwood is commonly biofilm. Fluval says it is no cause for alarm and that fish and shrimp may eat it. Observe your livestock and water conditions; the presence of biofilm does not remove the need to monitor the aquarium. Fluval
