Can You Dump Fish Guts in a Lake? Rules and Safe Disposal

Usually, no. Whether you can put fish guts back in a lake depends on the rules for that water and the authority that manages it. Unless local regulations expressly allow water disposal, bag the remains and put them in an appropriate garbage receptacle.

Can I throw fish guts back in the lake?

There is no nationwide rule that makes this legal everywhere. State regulations and site rules can differ, and some prohibit putting fish remains in any water. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission says, “Please do not dispose of fish heads, skeletons or entrails in any body of water.” North Carolina guidance recommends dry disposal instead.

Other rules set specific prohibitions or exceptions. Ohio prohibits placing or disposing of dead fish in waters or on their banks, except for use as bait. Ohio Administrative Code Rule 1501:31-13-03 states that restriction. New York prohibits carcass disposal within 100 feet of shore. New York fishing regulations give that boundary. Montana offers a limited example allowing entrails to be disposed of in deep water when the angler is in a boat; shore users are told to bag remains for garbage. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks regulations describe the local practice.

These examples are not interchangeable permissions. Follow the rule that applies to the exact lake and access site, including any park, refuge, or private-property rules.

What should I do with fish guts after cleaning a fish?

  1. Check the rules before cleaning. Consult the current state or provincial wildlife agency guidance and the managing authority for the lake, park, refuge, or access site. Look for rules about fish remains, water disposal, shoreline distances, ramps, swimming areas, and cleaning stations.
  2. Use an official fish-cleaning station if one is provided, following its posted instructions.
  3. If disposal in water is not expressly allowed, contain the remains. Bag them and put them in an appropriate garbage receptacle. Washington State Department of Ecology advises bagging fish waste and placing it in garbage when no other disposal option exists. Washington Ecology’s fish-waste guidance covers disposal options.
  4. Use another dry-disposal method only where permitted. North Carolina lists garbage, deep burying, or total burning as options. Check local restrictions before burying or burning waste.

Is it illegal to dump fish entrails near a boat ramp?

It may be. Oklahoma bans disposal within 100 yards of a boat ramp or designated swimming area unless specifically authorized. Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation guidance sets out this location-specific restriction. A different state or site may have a different rule, so do not assume that dumping is allowed just because you are away from shore or at a ramp.

Why do agencies discourage dumping fish waste?

  • Disease and parasites: North Carolina warns that fish parts in water can spread parasites and disease.
  • Water quality: Washington Ecology explains that, “In uncirculated waters, fish waste can deplete the water of dissolved oxygen as it decomposes.”
  • Nuisance and recreation: Repeated dumping at popular shorelines, ramps, and swimming areas can create odor and sanitation problems.

Fish waste includes flesh, skin, bones, and entrails, not just the guts. Avoid transferring remains from one water body to another; follow local instructions intended to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species and disease.

Can I gut a fish at the boat ramp?

Only if the site allows it and you can dispose of the remains as directed. Check for a designated cleaning station and posted rules. If the ramp has no authorized disposal option, keep the waste contained and take it to an appropriate garbage receptacle rather than leaving it on the bank or putting it in the water.
