Most cats learn to use a litter box when it is easy to reach, comfortable to enter, clean, and filled with litter they accept. For kittens, show them where the box is and keep it accessible as they grow. If an adult cat that used the box reliably starts having accidents, arrange a veterinary check before treating it as a training problem; straining or being unable to urinate needs urgent attention.
Set up a box your cat can use
Choose a quiet, easy-to-reach place away from food and water. Avoid noisy locations, places where another pet can block the route, or spots where a cat might feel trapped. In a multi-cat home, put boxes in separate locations; several boxes side by side may still leave a cat with only one usable spot.
Choose the right size and entry
The box should give your cat enough room to turn around and dig. Kittens need an entry they can manage, and the box may need to be replaced as they grow. Senior cats and cats with limited mobility may need low sides. A covered box is not automatically unsuitable, but some cats dislike enclosed spaces or trapped odors; offer an open alternative if you are unsure.
Provide enough boxes and keep them clean
A common household recommendation is one box per cat, plus one extra. In a multi-story home, make boxes available on more than one level. Scoop at least daily and wash the whole box regularly. Merck Veterinary Manual advises daily scooping and whole-box cleaning at least weekly; ASPCA recommends at least daily scooping and weekly washing with unscented soap, baking soda, or no soap. Adjust cleaning to how quickly the box gets soiled.

How to introduce a kitten to the litter box
Make the box easy for the kitten to find and enter, with a substrate it can scratch and dig in. Show the kitten where it is. Returning the kitten to the box after meals can be a useful routine cue, but do not force a fearful kitten into the box.
- Place the box within easy reach. Choose a quiet location and make sure the kitten can get in and out without help.
- Offer an acceptable litter. Many cats prefer unscented litter with small particles, but individual preferences vary. Watch what the kitten uses.
- Build a gentle routine. After meals, guide the kitten to the box as an invitation, not a punishment or forced placement.
- Reassess as the kitten grows. Check that the box still has enough room and that its entry remains manageable.
Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation veterinarian Kira Ramdas also recommends making the box accessible and using a routine when training a new kitten (Litter Box Training Your New Kitten).
Choose litter and a box by your cat’s preferences
Many cats accept fine, small-particle, unscented litter, but there is no single choice that suits every cat. A cat may reject a change in scent, texture, box style, or location. If your cat already uses a particular litter, do not abruptly replace it. Transition gradually or offer the new option in a separate box, then follow the cat’s demonstrated preference.

Check for medical problems first
A new pattern of urinating or defecating outside the box can be linked to illness or pain, not failed training. Arrange a veterinary exam for a cat that was previously reliable. Repeated attempts to urinate with little or no urine, straining, crying while trying to eliminate, or suspected blockage warrant prompt veterinary attention; inability to pass urine can be an emergency, especially in a male cat. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s guidance on behavior problems in cats discusses medical causes and elimination disorders.
Inspect access, cleanliness, and possible aversion
After medical causes are considered, look for a practical reason the box may not work for the cat:

- GREAT SIZE - Dimensions: 19"L x 15"W x 11.75"H. Open top IRIS Cat Litter Box is designed to offer cats plenty of room and quick accessibility
- Is it dirty, too small, or difficult to enter?
- Can the cat reach it at all times, or can another pet block or guard it?
- Was the litter, box, or location recently changed?
- Is the location noisy, exposed, or otherwise unsettling?
- Does the cat repeatedly choose one surface or spot?
These observations can help you and your veterinarian work out whether access, litter preference, fear, stress, or another cause is involved. Do not assume an accident is deliberate disobedience.
Distinguish marking from ordinary elimination
A small amount of urine sprayed onto a vertical surface while the cat stands with its tail raised is more consistent with urine marking than ordinary urination. This pattern is useful information to share with your veterinarian, but it does not by itself establish the cause.
Clean accidents without punishment
Use an enzymatic cleaner made for pet odors on soiled areas. Removing residual odor can help with cleanup, but it will not resolve an underlying medical problem, fear, access barrier, litter aversion, or conflict. Do not punish the cat: Merck states, “Punishment is not recommended and may even make the problem worse.”
When to seek behavior support
If fear or avoidance persists after veterinary care and reasonable changes to the setup, ask your veterinarian whether a board-certified veterinary behaviorist or qualified applied animal behavior professional is appropriate. Do not start medication without veterinary direction.
