Come leggere la cresta senza interpretarla da sola
La cresta è un indizio del livello di attenzione o attivazione, non un indicatore infallibile dell’umore. Animal Diversity Web descrive la cresta eretta quando la calopsitta è vigile o allarmata, inclinata quando è contenta e appiattita quando è agitata o si sente minacciata. La guida veterinaria LafeberVet avverte però che nei calopsitti la cresta eretta può comparire in risposta a stimoli sia positivi sia negativi.
Per questo, guarda anche il resto del corpo e la situazione: un rumore improvviso, una persona che si avvicina o un momento di gioco possono cambiare il significato probabile dello stesso segnale. Come scrive LafeberVet, «Careful observation of your bird’s body language can provide you with clues to when your bird is receptive to play and handling». Quali segnali possono indicare comfort e rilassamento
Stretching, pulizia del piumaggio, corpo disteso, piume morbide e il caratteristico macinare del becco possono accompagnare uno stato rilassato. Considerali indizi e confrontali con il comportamento abituale del tuo uccello: è importante che resti reattivo e attivo come al solito. Una posa tranquilla, da sola, non permette di valutare la salute.

Come distinguere paura, stress e forte attivazione
Una calopsitta spaventata o stressata può apparire rigida e sottile, tenere le piume aderenti al corpo o allontanare leggermente le ali facendole tremare. La postura pronta a spiccare il volo può essere un altro segnale di disagio. Se riesci, individua lo stimolo che precede la reazione e riducilo; quando non è possibile evitarlo, introducilo gradualmente e in condizioni sicure.
Quando è meglio fermarsi e darle spazio
Pupille che si restringono e dilatano rapidamente, testa abbassata e corpo inclinato, becco aperto, affondo o morso possono accompagnare una forte eccitazione. Anche la coda a ventaglio segnala un’elevata attivazione, ma può comparire nel corteggiamento: non basta quindi per concludere che l’uccello sia aggressivo.

Eccitazione e aggressività possono condividere alcuni segnali. Se la calopsitta appare tesa o molto attivata, non cercare di prenderla o accarezzarla: interrompi l’interazione e aspetta che si calmi prima di riprovare. In caso di paura, ridurre lo stimolo è preferibile a insistere sul contatto.
Come interpretare fischi, richiami e altri vocalizzi
Le calopsite sono uccelli sociali e usano canto e vocalizzazioni per comunicare. Fischi e richiami non indicano automaticamente un problema: ascolta quando avvengono, cosa succede intorno e se il suono è abituale per quel singolo uccello. Evita di assegnare a ogni richiamo un significato fisso.
