Success depends on the individual betta, the Corydoras species and group size, aquarium footprint, stable water conditions, and your ability to separate the fish quickly if aggression develops.
Are Corydoras and betta fish compatible?
Corydoras are generally peaceful, bottom-dwelling shoaling catfish, while bettas are territorial labyrinth fish that may defend space from tank mates. Aqueon and PetMD list Corydoras among possible betta companions, but Fluval cautions that an individual betta may still chase or attack fish considered suitable in general.
Compatibility is therefore an individual-fish question. A calm betta may ignore Corydoras; another may harass them continuously. Plan the aquarium so that the fish can be watched closely and separated without delay.
What must be true before you try the pairing?
Adequate aquarium size and layout
Aqueon recommends a peaceful betta community aquarium of 15 gallons or larger. That is a care-guide recommendation, not a universal stocking guarantee. The actual requirement also depends on the Corydoras species, the size of its adult group, tank footprint, filtration and water quality.

Corydoras should not be kept as a single “cleanup fish.” Aqueon recommends a group of five or more, with the exact species selected for the aquarium’s size and its other inhabitants. A longer tank with open floor space is usually more useful than a tall, narrow one because Corydoras spend most of their time on the substrate.
A cycled, stable aquarium
Set up and cycle the aquarium before acquiring either fish. Cycling allows beneficial bacteria to develop that process fish waste. Test the water regularly rather than assuming that clear water is safe. The CDC also advises preparing the aquarium and researching compatibility before bringing fish home.

Gentle filtration and secure equipment
PetMD recommends a low or adjustable-flow filter for bettas. Strong currents can stress a betta and make it difficult for a slower fish to rest. Use an aquarium heater and thermometer to keep temperature steady, and make sure the filter intake cannot trap small Corydoras.
Choose the Corydoras species before setting the temperature
Do not select a temperature solely from a generic “Cory catfish” label. Corydoras species differ in adult size and care needs, so identify the exact species and compare its requirements with those of the betta.

The Fish Breeders Association of Great Britain describes an ideal Corydoras temperature around 75°F while noting that higher and lower temperatures may be tolerated. That older guidance does not replace checking the care requirements for the species you intend to keep.
How to set up the tank for both fish
- Identify the Corydoras species and adult size. Confirm its temperature, group and space requirements before purchasing fish.
- Use an aquarium of at least 15 gallons for the community plan. Choose a footprint that gives the Corydoras group unobstructed bottom area and the betta calm resting areas.
- Cycle the aquarium completely. Test water during cycling and after stocking; do not treat a quick setup or a bottled product as proof that the tank is ready.
- Install a heater, thermometer and gentle-flow filter. Verify that temperature remains within the confirmed overlap and that the current is not excessive.
- Add cover and breaks in line of sight. Plants, wood and other aquarium-safe structures can give the betta places to retreat and reduce constant visual contact. Leave enough open substrate for Corydoras to forage.
- Introduce fish cautiously. Acclimate them to the water, then observe interactions rather than assuming the combination will work.
- Keep a separation plan ready. Have a separate suitable aquarium or another safe, established way to isolate one fish immediately.
Feeding Corydoras in a betta community
Corydoras are omnivores that usually feed on the bottom. They are not tank cleaners, and leftover food should not be their only food source. The Fish Breeders Association specifically warns against keeping catfish merely to consume uneaten food.

- Offer a complete Corydoras sinking food or omnivore pellet that reaches the substrate.
- Feed deliberately so the Corydoras receive food rather than relying on scraps from the betta.
- Remove excessive leftovers and include feeding in your water-quality routine.
- Watch that the betta does not monopolize food intended for the bottom group.
Introducing the fish and monitoring behavior
Early signs the arrangement may be working
- The betta can rest and patrol without repeatedly targeting the Corydoras.
- Corydoras swim, forage and rest normally instead of hiding continuously.
- No fish has torn fins, bite marks or persistent physical damage.
Warning signs to act on
- The betta repeatedly chases, nips or corners Corydoras.
- Corydoras remain concealed, stop feeding or show rapid breathing after harassment.
- Any fish has injuries or cannot escape the other fish.
Fluval emphasizes that betta temperament varies and that there is no guarantee a particular specimen will tolerate tank mates. If aggression is persistent, isolate the incompatible fish; do not wait for an injury to prove the pairing has failed. The CDC also advises separating sick fish, so quarantine and hospital arrangements should be part of responsible fish keeping.
Other possible betta tank mates
Aqueon lists tetras, calm barbs, rasboras, live bearers and Corydoras among possible companions for a peaceful betta community. These are possibilities, not automatic recommendations. Every candidate must fit the aquarium’s volume and water conditions, and the individual betta may still reject it. Avoid adding any species simply because it appears on a compatibility list; observe behavior and retain a separation option.
Equipment and maintenance checklist
- Aquarium with enough volume and floor space for the betta plus a Corydoras group
- Aquarium heater and thermometer
- Low-flow or adjustable-flow filter
- Freshwater aquarium water test kit
- Water conditioner suitable for freshwater aquariums
- Corydoras sinking food or complete omnivore pellets
- Gravel vacuum for routine substrate cleaning
- Separate, safe aquarium or isolation setup in case the fish are incompatible
These tools support stable temperature, filtration, monitoring and feeding; none can make an aggressive betta safe with tank mates.
