To cat-proof your home, make common hazards harder to reach: secure open windows, manage electrical cords, put away string-like items, check plants before bringing them indoors, and store chemicals and medicines safely. Then build a quick hazard check into everyday tidying. These steps reduce avoidable risks, but they cannot assess a particular exposure or replace veterinary advice.
1. Secure open windows
A curious cat can jump or fall through an unscreened window. ASPCA advises: “Be sure to install snug and sturdy screens in all of your windows before leaving them open and unattended.” Check that each screen fits securely and is in good condition before opening the window. A screen is a barrier, not a guarantee that a cat cannot get through it, so consider whether the window and screen are suitable for your home.
ASPCA spring pet-safety tips recommend screens for open windows. If a screen needs attention, a repair kit or pet-resistant mesh may be an option; verify the product’s fit and suitability rather than assuming any screen will contain a cat.
2. Manage electrical cords and wires
Cats may chew or play with dangling cords. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2022 household-hazards brochure recommends cord covers and blocking access to cords and wires. ASPCA warns that chewing electrical cords can cause serious burns in a cat’s mouth and other health problems.

- Gentle Guidance for Better Cat Habits: Tired of seeing your sofa, carpet, curtains, or furniture become your cat’s favorite scratching spot? This cat deterrent spray for furniture protection helps create an invisible boundary that gently guides cats away from treated areas and encourages more appropriate behaviors. Protect your home while supporting a calmer, more harmonious relationship with your feline friend
- Dual Training Signals Cats Can Understand: Designed with a fresh botanical scent and a bitter taste cue, this deterrent spray helps discourage unwanted scratching, chewing, and marking behaviors. The scent helps create a clear boundary, while the taste provides a gentle reminder for curious cats that like to nibble or explore with their mouth
- Build Better Habits with Consistent Use: Training takes patience and repetition. For best results, spray target areas such as sofa corners, rugs, curtains, furniture legs, or other problem spots 1–2 times daily during the initial training period. Regular use helps reinforce boundaries and gives your cat consistent cues, even when you are not at home
- Plant-Based Formula for Everyday Home Use: Made with naturally derived ingredients, including orange peel extract, citronella oil, and lemongrass extract, this cat deterrent spray is designed for use around the home when applied as directed. It offers a gentle way to guide your cat’s behavior without harsh training methods, helping pet families protect their space with confidence
- Suitable for Indoor & Outdoor Areas: Use indoors to help protect sofas, carpets, curtains, plants, and holiday decorations, or use outdoors to help create boundaries around patios, garden areas, and entry points. This cat deterrent spray is a practical training aid for reducing scratching, chewing, spraying, and other unwanted feline behaviors in common household areas
- Route cords behind furniture or otherwise block your cat’s access where practical.
- Use a cord cover or cable sleeve as one layer of prevention, choosing one suited to the cord and location.
- Check accessible cords for damage and address damaged wiring; a cover does not make a damaged cord safe.
ASPCA’s guidance on keeping foster cats out of trouble also identifies electrical cords as a hazard.
3. Put string-like items away
Rope, fabric, string, yarn, tinsel and similar items can be dangerous if swallowed. ASPCA explains that these objects may lodge in a cat’s digestive system and can lead to a need for emergency surgery. Store them where your cat cannot reach them, and put away play string as soon as playtime ends rather than leaving it unattended.

Use a closed drawer, box or other secure storage for sewing supplies, gift ribbon and decorations. If you suspect your cat has swallowed string or another object, contact a veterinarian promptly for advice instead of waiting for symptoms.
4. Check plants and flowers before bringing them in
Identify each plant and check its specific risk against a reliable reference before placing it where a cat can reach it. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s list of potentially dangerous items for pets includes numerous plants. Risk varies by plant and exposure, so do not assume an unidentified plant is safe.

Lilies deserve particular caution: ASPCA says even a small exposure to any part of an Easter lily, including pollen, can cause kidney injury in cats. If you suspect your cat has eaten or contacted a potentially toxic plant, contact a veterinarian or a poison-control resource promptly. Online plant lists cannot determine the risk of a specific exposure.
5. Store cleaners, chemicals and medicines securely
Keep household chemicals and medications in places your cat cannot access, with containers tightly sealed. Keep products in their original packaging, or use clearly labeled containers when appropriate, and follow the product label for storage and use. A closed cabinet or secure latch may help restrict access, but the important point is to keep hazardous products beyond your cat’s reach.

Not every cleaner poses the same risk, and “natural” does not automatically mean safe. ASPCA Poison Control notes that many cleaners can be used around pets when label directions are followed, but product details matter. See its information on poisonous household products and ASPCA’s general springtime safety tips for prevention guidance. For a possible exposure, seek veterinary or poison-control advice promptly; general information online cannot triage a time-sensitive incident.

PetMD quotes Linda Hall, a certified cat behaviorist and co-founder of Cat Behavior Alliance, saying: “I think cleaning up after yourself and looking at what can be a choking hazard or toxic is number one.” A brief reset can help catch risks before a cat finds them:

- [SCENARIO-BASED FURNITURE PROTECTION] Tired of watching your sofa, curtains, or carpets turn into scratching posts? Our spray acts as an invisible boundary, helping to steer your cat away from delicate decor. It’s the ideal solution for protecting new furniture and holiday decorations like Christmas trees from curious claws and persistent scratching.
- [DUAL-SIGNAL TRAINING TECHNOLOGY] This formula works through two natural cues that cats instinctively respect. First, a botanical scent creates an olfactory boundary to discourage marking; second, a naturally-derived mild taste provides a gentle reminder for chewers. It’s a smarter way to communicate household boundaries without the need for loud noises or stress.
- [GENTLE, PET-SAFE] Crafted with a family-first philosophy, our deterrent uses a blend of naturally derived essential oils, including Citronella, Peppermint, and Lemongrass. Used at minimal, pet-safe concentrations, it provides effective guidance for your feline friend while ensuring the air in your home remains fresh and safe for the whole family.
- [INDOOR & OUTDOOR HARMONY] From protecting indoor upholstery and rugs to creating gentle boundaries on patios or garden furniture, this versatile spray adapts to your needs. It helps manage common behaviors such as excessive chewing, scratching, and inappropriate peeing, fostering a more peaceful environment in nearly any situation.
- [CONSISTENT RESULTS FOR LASTING HABITS] While one spray provides an immediate cue, consistency is the key to behavioral change. Simply apply 1–2 times daily to target areas during the initial training period. This routine reinforces house rules, providing a "gentle reminder" to your pet even when you aren't there to supervise.
- Before leaving a window open, check that its screen is secure and in sound condition.
- After using cords, string, craft supplies or decorations, put them away and check for damage or loose pieces.
- Before bringing home a plant or bouquet, identify it and check a trusted plant-safety reference.
- After cleaning or taking medicine, seal containers and return them to secure storage.
These habits help make hazards less accessible, but they are not a substitute for professional advice when you suspect a cat has been exposed to something harmful.
