Wahl’s 2021 Dirty Dogs Contest had ten finalist entries—not eleven. One entry featured two puppies, Sharon and Debbie, which may explain the higher count in the supplied title. The dogs’ stories describe severe matting, fleas, mange and other neglect; grooming and follow-up care helped restore comfort and, for several, led toward adoption. The official contest materials do not identify the individual winner by name.
How the 2021 Dirty Dogs Contest worked
Wahl described the 2021 edition as its tenth annual Dirty Dogs Contest, run with Greater Good Charities. The official rules say entries opened September 13 and closed November 9, 2021, Central time. Entrants had to submit before-and-after photos of the same pet. After submissions closed, sponsors selected ten finalist entries, and public voting ran once daily from October 21 through November 9. Public votes determined the top three.
The affiliated rescues received grants of $10,000 for first place, $3,000 for second and $2,000 for third, according to the official contest rules and Wahl’s 2021 release. The available 2021 materials explain the voting and prize structure but do not name the winning dog or rescue.
Who were the ten finalist entries?
Wahl’s 2021 release describes the following ten entries. Sharon and Debbie were a paired puppy entry, not two separate finalists.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the makeovers changed—and what they did not establish
The finalist stories show grooming addressing immediate problems such as restricted movement, painful toileting, obscured eyes and flea-covered coats. Several dogs needed more than a haircut: the release also describes treatment, healing or other follow-up care. It says some dogs found homes or were moving toward adoption, while other outcomes are described more generally. A makeover photo alone does not establish a medical diagnosis or prove that grooming by itself resolved a health problem.
Wahl’s animal advocate Lee Asher put the intended impact this way: “Good grooming can change a dog’s life; not only do they feel healthier and happier, but their true personality can also finally shine through.” The release names clippers, brushes, shampoo and accessories among grooming products, but it does not specify which products were used on each finalist.
