To train your dog at home, teach the behavior you want and reward it as soon as it happens. Pair clear, consistent cues with rewards your dog values, and arrange the home so your dog can succeed while learning. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) recommends reward-based methods for all canine training, including behavior problems.
How to train your dog at home: the reward loop
Reward-based training teaches a dog which actions pay off. When your dog does the behavior you want, mark the moment with a click or a short word such as “yes,” then give a reward. The marker helps identify the exact action; the reward makes repeating it worthwhile. A clicker is optional—what matters is using the marker consistently and following it with a reward.
Choose rewards for your individual dog and the situation. Some dogs work eagerly for small pieces of food; others respond better to a toy, a short game, praise, or petting. Keep food pieces small, and use something especially appealing when a skill is new or distractions make it harder. A reward only helps if the dog values it.
A simple routine for your first training sessions
- Choose one behavior. Decide what you want your dog to do, such as sitting to greet someone or coming when called.
- Start somewhere quiet. Use a familiar, low-distraction area so your dog can focus.
- Mark and reward promptly. As soon as your dog performs the behavior, say your marker or click, then deliver the reward.
- Build in small steps. Reward useful approximations as your dog learns. Add distance, duration, or distractions gradually, changing one challenge at a time.
- Keep household rules consistent. Agree on which behaviors are allowed and use the same cues and expectations. If one person invites jumping while another tries to stop it, the dog gets mixed signals.
Teach an alternative behavior rather than focusing only on stopping an unwanted one. For example, reward four paws on the floor or a sit when greeting people. Practice when the dog is calm, and manage the situation—such as keeping greetings low-key—while the new habit develops.

House-training at home
House-training is easier when you can supervise closely and reward outdoor success immediately. Bring treats or a toy with you so you can reward your dog just after they finish toileting outside.
- Supervise indoors. Keep your dog where you can notice signs they need to go. If you cannot supervise, use a safe, suitable management area only if your dog is comfortable there.
- Go outside and wait. Give your dog an opportunity to toilet outdoors.
- Reward after they finish. Deliver the treat, toy, or other valued reward right after toileting so the connection is clear.
- If you catch an accident in progress, calmly take your dog outside. Avoid scolding or startling them.
- If you find an accident later, clean it up without punishing the dog. A delayed reprimand does not show them what to do instead.
Using a crate or pen
A crate or pen can help with management or provide a place to rest, but introduce it positively and use it only for periods the dog can handle comfortably. It is not a punishment. If your dog is distressed in confinement, use another management option and seek professional guidance if needed.

Common home behaviors: teach the alternative

These are starting points, not one-size-fits-all treatment plans. If a behavior is driven by fear or anxiety, or creates a safety risk, a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional can help identify an appropriate plan.
Puppies need safe socialization, too
Training a puppy is not only about cues. Give them gradual, positive exposure to people, animals, places, and everyday situations, adjusting the experience so the puppy can remain comfortable. Avoid forcing an interaction or overwhelming them.

Ask your veterinarian how to balance socialization with vaccination and disease risk. In particular, avoid highly trafficked, unsanitized places where the health status of other dogs is unknown. If a puppy is fearful, seek veterinary guidance rather than trying to push them through the situation.

Seek help for serious aggression, anxiety, or fear, and contact a veterinarian about sudden behavior changes. Addressing difficult behavior may require management and a tailored behavior-modification plan; in some cases, treatment may also include medication. For a serious problem, do not rely on a general training article as a diagnosis or individualized plan.

Choose a reward-based professional and ask about both methods and credentials. AVSAB’s public position index identifies its 2021 humane dog-training statement as its current authoritative view. That statement says, “Evidence supports the use of reward based methods for all canine training.” It also describes an advantage for reward-based approaches in welfare, training effectiveness, and the dog-human relationship. These are the society’s conclusions from the literature it reviews, not a guarantee that any single method will resolve every dog’s problem.
