Do Barracudas Eat Clownfish Eggs?

Barracudas are primarily fish predators, and no cited source documents one eating clownfish eggs. The eggs are attached beside an anemone and tended by the male.

Barracudas eating clownfish eggs is not documented in the sources available, and it appears unlikely. Barracudas mainly hunt fish, while clownfish eggs are attached to a surface beside a host anemone and guarded by the male. A barracuda could encounter a clutch, but there is no direct evidence here that it eats one.

What barracudas usually eat

Barracudas are predatory fish whose diet is mainly other fishes. FishBase describes the great barracuda, Sphyraena barracuda, as pelagic and piscivorous, and lists fishes, cephalopods and sometimes shrimps in its diet (FishBase species profile).

A 2002 study of 100 yellowmouth barracudas in the Azores found fish as the only observed prey. Juvenile Trachurus picturatus appeared in 82.2% of stomachs that contained food; that result describes this species and study, not all barracudas (Barreiros, Santos and Borba, 2002). These diet findings support the conclusion that barracudas are more associated with hunting fish than with feeding on a stationary clutch of eggs.

Why clownfish eggs are a different target

Clownfish attach their eggs to a firm surface beside their host anemone, rather than releasing them to drift freely. For roughly six to seven days, the male tends the nest: he fans the eggs to aerate them, removes debris, eats eggs that are infertile or damaged, and chases away predators, according to the Aquarium of the Pacific.

Tetra Whisper IQ 130 GPH Power Filter for Aquariums
  • QUIET AQUARIUM FILTER: The Tetra Whisper IQ Power Filter with Stay Clean technology contains a sound shield for quiet filtration less than 40 dB.
  • SELF PRIMING: Submerged motor starts up with no priming required.
  • CAPACITY: The Tetra Whisper IQ 20 Power Filter works in filters up to 20 gallons (130 GPH).
  • STAY CLEAN TECHNOLOGY: By maintaining healthy pH levels, creates easier maintenance for healthier fish.
  • CARTRIDGE REFILLS: Change cartridges monthly; uses large-sized Tetra Whisper Bio-Bag Filter Cartridges (refills sold separately).

That placement and parental care do not make a clutch invulnerable, but they matter when considering whether a predator is likely to reach and eat it. The available sources do not establish that barracudas routinely target eggs or approach clownfish nests to feed.

Could a barracuda attack “Nemo’s” eggs?

It is possible for a barracuda to encounter a clutch in a reef habitat, but possibility is not evidence of a known feeding behavior. No direct observation in the cited sources records a barracuda eating clownfish eggs. The most accurate answer is therefore not documented and unlikely, rather than impossible.

Tetra Whisper IQ 215 GPH Power Filter for Aquariums
  • QUIET AQUARIUM FILTER: The Tetra Whisper IQ Power Filter with Stay Clean technology contains a sound shield for quiet filtration less than 40 dB.
  • SELF PRIMING: Submerged motor starts up with no priming required.
  • CAPACITY: The Tetra Whisper IQ 45 Power Filter works in tanks up to 45 gallons (215 GPH).
  • STAY CLEAN TECHNOLOGY: By maintaining healthy pH levels, creates easier maintenance for healthier fish.
  • CARTRIDGE REFILLS: Change cartridges monthly; uses large-sized Tetra Whisper Bio-Bag Filter Cartridges (refills sold separately).

The sources also do not provide a species-by-species account of the main predators of wild clownfish eggs. It would be misleading to name other fish or invertebrates as confirmed principal egg predators without evidence specific to those interactions.

Eggs, hatchlings and adult fish are different stages

After hatching, clownfish larvae enter the water column and feed on small planktonic prey such as copepods. A USGS summary of research on larval Amphiprion ocellaris discusses copepod capture during this planktonic stage (USGS, 2019). This is post-hatching feeding biology; it does not show that barracudas eat the attached eggs.

  • INTERNAL POWER FILTER: Tetra Whisper Internal Power Filter for 5- to 10-gallon aquariums uses medium Whisper BioBag filter cartridges that are easy to change.
  • QUIET 85 GPH MOTOR: The internal pump efficiently filters up to 85 gallons per hour.
  • POWERFUL FILTRATION: Water flows through the cartridge floss, trapping debris and fish waste, while Ultra-activated carbon helps remove odor and discoloration.
  • SPACE-SAVING DESIGN: Your aquarium can be 1” from the wall with the internal filter designed to clip directly on your aquarium wall and be hidden by décor.
  • EASILY ADJUSTABLE: Adjustable clip allows for a variety of setups to easily adjust to high or low water levels.

The Aquarium of the Pacific says hatching occurs shortly after sunset and describes an approximately seven-day planktonic larval phase. Those details concern what happens after the eggs hatch, not the likelihood of a barracuda finding a nest.
