Yes, some butterflyfish eat live coral, and many also eat small animals. Their diets vary by species: obligate coral feeders rely heavily on coral polyps or mucus, while other species combine coral with worms, crustaceans, sponges, hydroids, anemones, zooplankton, algae or other foods. “Animals” usually means small invertebrates and plankton—not routinely larger fish.
What butterflyfish actually eat
Butterflyfish (family Chaetodontidae) are not a single dietary type. Diet studies commonly place them in four groups:
- Obligate coral-polyp feeders: depend strongly on live coral for food.
- Facultative coral-polyp feeders: eat coral but can switch among other foods and substrates.
- Non-coralline-invertebrate feeders: focus on prey such as worms, crustaceans, sponges, hydroids and anemones.
- Zooplankton feeders: capture drifting animals in the water column.
Algae and plankton can also appear in a species’ menu. Consequently, there is no reliable family-wide percentage for “coral versus animal” food; the balance changes among species and locations.
When “eating coral” does—and does not—mean
Butterflyfish generally nip the living, polyp-bearing surface of a colony or take coral mucus and tissue. They are not normally grinding up the hard calcium-carbonate skeleton. Accurate descriptions are that a fish takes coral polyps, feeds on coral mucus or grazes a live-coral surface.

That distinction matters in an aquarium: a butterflyfish may damage a coral colony even though it is not consuming the entire framework. Conversely, a species that can live without coral is not automatically safe with every coral species; individual diets and availability of alternative prey differ.
Species examples
| Species | Documented foods | What the example shows |
|---|---|---|
| Chaetodon austriacus (Red Sea) | Mainly Acropora, Pocillopora, Montipora and Stylophora; large Acropora colonies are preferred. | A strongly coral-focused diet can include selection of particular coral genera and colony sizes. Coral-associated gobies may influence which colonies are chosen. |
| Chaetodon auriga | Coral polyps, polychaete worms, crustaceans, plankton and algae. | An omnivorous pattern that mixes coral with both animal and plant-like foods. |
| Chaetodon speculum (Ovalspot Butterflyfish) | Coral polyps and small benthic invertebrates. | Coral and bottom-dwelling animal prey can both be regular foods. |
| Chaetodon trifascialis (Chevroned Butterflyfish) | Mucus and polyps of Acropora within its territory. | A territorial specialist may depend on a particular coral resource rather than feeding broadly. |
| Chaetodon pelewensis (Dot-and-Dash Butterflyfish) | Coral polyps and benthic invertebrates. | Another species combining coral feeding with small animal prey. |
The Ovalspot, Chevroned and Dot-and-Dash descriptions are from Australian Museum species accounts. The Red Sea example illustrates that geography can matter: feeding observations in one region should not be generalized to every population.

What “animal prey” means for butterflyfish
Small invertebrates make up the animal portion of many diets. Reported prey includes:
- polychaete (bristle) worms;
- small crustaceans;
- sponges;
- hydroids;
- anemones;
- other tiny animals living on reef surfaces; and
- zooplankton drifting in the water.
These records do not describe butterflyfish as routine predators of larger reef fish. A fish may take a tiny larva or other minute animal without being a fish-eating species.

Obligate versus facultative coral dependence
Obligate coral feeders
Obligate species select live coral substrates and obtain much of their nutrition from coral polyps, mucus or associated material. Removing suitable coral can therefore remove both food and the feeding surface they use.
Facultative coral feeders
Facultative species use a wider range of substrates and can include non-coral invertebrates, plankton or algae. They may still nip corals, but their survival is not defined by one coral resource in the same way as an obligate specialist.

Field studies report substantial differences among species and among sites. A label such as “butterflyfish” is not enough to predict whether a particular fish will be coral-safe.

Coral-dependent butterflyfish can act as close consumers of living coral, selecting particular colonies or coral genera. Their feeding links fish behavior with coral abundance and condition. Facultative species have more dietary flexibility and may shift toward other available substrates or prey. This is why reef assessments consider species identity, local habitat and food availability rather than treating all butterflyfish as equivalent coral predators.

What this means for aquarium keepers
Before adding a butterflyfish to a reef aquarium, identify the exact species and determine whether it is an obligate coral specialist, a facultative coral feeder, an invertebrate feeder or a plankton feeder. A general “butterflyfish diet” label cannot predict coral risk. Species that naturally target live coral may continue nipping colonies in captivity, while species documented eating worms, crustaceans or plankton may have different priorities.
Quick Recap
- Confirm the scientific name, not just a common name.
- Check the species’ natural prey and coral dependence for the relevant geographic population.
- Assume a coral specialist can threaten susceptible corals even if alternative foods are offered.
- Do not infer that a fish eats other fish merely because its diet includes “animals”; the documented animal foods are predominantly small invertebrates and zooplankton.
