Wild African savanna elephants may use individually specific, name-like calls to address one another—but scientists have not decoded elephant names or shown that elephants have a human-like language. A 2024 study used machine learning to detect patterns linked to the intended recipient of elephant rumbles, then tested how elephants responded to calls in playback experiments. A 2026 reanalysis has since challenged part of the machine-learning evidence, so the interpretation remains open.
What did the elephant study find?
In a study published online in Nature Ecology & Evolution on June 10, 2024, researchers reported evidence that some African savanna elephant calls contain information about which individual the caller is addressing. The authors described the calls as “individually specific name-like calls”—careful wording that signals a possible vocal label, not a confirmed word in the human sense. Read the original study.
The research involved wild elephants in Kenya, including animals in Amboseli National Park and Samburu National Reserve. Researchers analyzed 469 calls linked to individually known elephants; the reported dataset covered 101 callers and 117 recipients. The calls were primarily rumbles, which can include very low-frequency components below the range of human hearing.
The central question was narrower than whether elephants “talk”: could acoustic patterns in a call help identify its intended recipient? The researchers reported that a model could predict recipients better than chance. That result is consistent with individual vocal labels, but prediction alone does not establish what information elephants perceive or how they interpret it.

How did AI help—and what did it not do?
The study used a random-forest machine-learning model, a method that looks for statistical patterns in data and uses them to classify examples. Researchers supplied acoustic features from recorded calls and tested whether the model could predict which elephant a call had been directed toward. The model was a pattern detector, not a chatbot or translation system.
Machine learning can detect combinations of acoustic features that are difficult to spot consistently by listening. But a successful classification does not mean the model understands a call’s meaning, identifies a discrete “name” within it, or knows what an elephant intends. The model’s output was a prediction about recipient identity, not a human-readable translation. Save the Elephants describes the project and its field context.

What did the playback experiment test?
The researchers also played recorded calls to 17 individual elephants. They compared calls that had originally been directed to the subject with calls from the same caller that had been directed to a different elephant. This test asked whether an elephant responded differently when hearing a call originally addressed to it, outside the original exchange.
In a correction published in 2025, the authors reported five data-entry or scoring errors in the playback dataset and updated the analysis. The corrected result showed that subjects vocalized more quickly after test calls than after control calls: Cox regression, χ² = 6.2, p = 0.013, hazard ratio = 5.48. The authors said the errors changed some numerical values but not the qualitative conclusion or statistical significance. See the 2025 correction and corrected statistics.

The playback results strengthen the case that elephants distinguish calls originally directed to them from calls intended for another individual. They do not, by themselves, show that the animals recognize a symbolic word. Familiarity with the caller, social relationship, or other acoustic context could also matter.
Why compare elephant calls with human names?
A human name usually identifies a person without copying that person’s voice. The elephant study argued that its proposed vocal labels may also identify recipients without simply imitating the recipient’s own distinctive call. If confirmed, that would make the system different from the better-known account of dolphin signature whistles, in which dolphins can address others by copying their distinctive whistles. The comparison is about how an identity signal may work, not evidence that elephants use names exactly as humans do. Nature’s research briefing explains the comparison.

Individual addressing could be useful to animals that maintain complex social relationships and communicate over distance, through vegetation, or while a group is moving. Researchers have suggested that name-like calls may be especially useful in long-distance communication or adult-to-calf interactions. Those are plausible explanations for why such signals might evolve, not functions established by the study. The study announcement describes the proposed contexts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does this prove elephants have a language?
No. The evidence concerns one possible language-like feature: calls that may identify individual recipients. Communication, a vocal label and a full language are not interchangeable claims. Demonstrating language in a broader sense would require evidence beyond this study, such as a reliably characterized vocabulary, shared meanings across callers, meaningful combinations of signals, or reference to things beyond the immediate interaction.

The study did not show that elephants name objects, places, food or abstract ideas; that they use syntax; or that they combine labels into sentences. Nor did it establish that every elephant has one fixed name, that every call contains a name, or that the same labels are used across years, groups or populations. The findings concern African savanna elephants and cannot automatically be extended to Asian elephants or all elephant species.
Have scientists discovered the elephants’ actual names?
No. The model predicted which individual a call was directed toward; it did not extract a sound that researchers could translate into a human name. The study also did not establish whether different callers use the same label for a particular elephant, or whether labels vary with caller, relationship, context or location. Name-like components may be used selectively rather than in every exchange. Axios explains what the study did—and did not—decode.
Why is the finding being debated?
The original study combined recordings tied to known wild elephants with a playback experiment, but the machine-learning analysis has important uncertainties. Calls were unevenly distributed across caller–receiver pairs, and acoustic differences might reflect the caller, a particular social pairing, time, location or recording conditions rather than a receiver-specific label.
A 2026 reanalysis in Animal Behaviour argued that caller identity and temporal autocorrelation—similarity among observations close together in time—could have contributed to the original model’s apparent ability to predict recipients. It also highlighted an uneven sample: 31% of calls were single observations from individual caller–receiver pairs, while 33% came from only 13 pairs. The reanalysis challenges whether the model isolated recipient-specific information; it does not, on its own, erase the playback observations. Read the 2026 reanalysis.
The best-supported interpretation is therefore measured: the 2024 study offered evidence consistent with name-like calls, and the playback findings support the possibility that elephants respond differently to calls directed to them. But the machine-learning result has been challenged, and better-controlled evidence is needed to establish that the calls contain stable, receiver-specific labels. The authors’ data are available through Dryad, with analysis materials archived on Zenodo.
