No available evidence establishes that mahi-mahi mate for life. Sources describe frequent spawning and captive spawning involving multiple females, but neither shows that the same wild fish stay paired over time. Spawning repeatedly is not the same as maintaining a lifelong pair bond.
What does mahi-mahi spawning tell us?
NOAA Fisheries identifies Atlantic mahi-mahi as Coryphaena hippurus and says they can reproduce at four to five months old. During the spawning season, mahi-mahi are believed to spawn every two to three days, releasing 33,000 to 66,000 eggs per event, according to NOAA Fisheries’ Atlantic species profile. NOAA also says Atlantic mahi-mahi spawn beneath floating mats of brown algae called Sargassum.
These details describe reproductive timing, egg production and habitat—not whether a female and male return to one another as partners. A high spawning frequency cannot, by itself, demonstrate fidelity or a long-term bond.
What do studies say about partners and pair bonds?
Captive broodstock
A 2019 developmental study reported natural, noninduced spawning in captivity at a sex ratio of one male to eight females; the females spawned asynchronously. This describes those captive broodstock conditions, not the mating system of wild mahi-mahi. The observation does not show that any two fish formed a lasting pair. Majorcan waters
A 1997 study examined 410 mahi-mahi sampled off Majorca during the 1990 and 1991 fishing seasons. Its reproductive findings—including estimated lengths at which half the sampled females and males were mature, 54.5 cm and 61.8 cm fork length respectively—were consistent with multiple spawning over an extended season. The study did not track persistent partnerships between individual fish. Read the study in Fisheries Research.
What remains unknown?
The cited sources do not establish whether wild mahi-mahi form pair bonds across seasons, let alone for life. Repeated spawning, extended spawning seasons and group spawning observations are not evidence that the same two individuals remain together. The Atlantic information from NOAA and the regional Majorcan and captive studies also concern different settings; their findings should not be treated as a single universal description of every population.
