The clip shows an American woodcock—also called a timberdoodle—rocking and probing the ground with her chicks. That “wobble dance” is part of foraging, and the movement may help make earthworms easier to detect. But scientists have not proved that it lures worms, or that the mother is teaching a choreographed routine.
What is happening in the video?
Scroll.in published the clip on August 11, 2020, embedding a social post attributed to the Earth’s Beauty account and dated August 9, 2020. Its caption says an American woodcock “teaches chicks a dance to lure worms.” The repost does not establish who originally filmed it, where it was filmed, or whether the clip is unedited. Scroll.in’s video post
The birds are rocking or bobbing as they walk and probe the forest floor. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission describes American woodcocks shifting their weight from one foot to the other while probing for earthworms. The clip is better understood as a mother and chicks foraging together than as proof of a formal dance lesson.
Does the wobble really lure worms?
It may help the birds find food, but the explanation remains a hypothesis. The rocking motion could create vibrations that prompt earthworms to move underground, making them easier for the woodcock to locate. Cornell Lab of Ornithology notes that the vibrations may cause worms to move and produce slight sounds the birds can hear or feel. Cornell Lab’s American Woodcock life history

Researchers are not certain why woodcocks bob. Audubon also describes disturbance of earthworms as one possible explanation, rather than a proven purpose. Audubon’s American Woodcock field guide
There is another proposed explanation: the movement might make the bird more noticeable to predators. Smithsonian quotes University of Rhode Island ecologist Scott R. McWilliams: “I think it’s actually to be more obvious and basically tell the predator, ‘I pretty much can see you, and I can take off at will, and you’re not going to get me.’” Smithsonian Magazine’s account of the woodcock’s movement

Are the chicks learning from their mother?
The mother is with her chicks as they forage, but the video alone cannot show that she is deliberately teaching them a specific routine. American woodcock chicks hatch down-covered and well developed, able to move soon after hatching. Cornell lists a clutch of one to five eggs and an incubation period of 20–22 days. Cornell Lab’s life-history account
North Carolina Wildlife says the mother begins teaching chicks to probe the ground for food when they are about 3–4 days old. Audubon reports that she feeds them for about a week as they learn to probe. They do not become independent immediately: Mass Audubon says the mother and chicks disband after 6–8 weeks. Is this the male woodcock’s sky dance?
No. The ground-level wobble and the male courtship display are different behaviors.
| Behavior | Who and where | What happens | Purpose or explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rocking foraging walk | A woodcock probing the ground; the clip shows a mother with chicks | The bird rocks or bobs while searching the soil | Foraging behavior; the idea that vibrations help expose or locate worms is plausible but not settled |
| Sky dance | Adult male in an open area during spring courtship | The male gives a buzzy “peent” call, flies upward, then spirals back down | A courtship display; Pheasants Forever describes a 1–2 minute call sequence followed by flight to 100–300 feet |
Pheasants Forever’s description of the male display gives the sequence and height range; Mass Audubon also describes the “peent” call and a 200–300-foot display. Those figures describe the courtship flight, not the ground movement in the video. Pheasants Forever’s timberdoodle display description Mass Audubon’s American Woodcock page
