Tuna contains purines, which the body breaks down into uric acid; high uric acid can contribute to gout. Most people with gout do not have to avoid tuna altogether, but moderation is sensible. Diet can support gout management, though it usually cannot replace prescribed treatment.
Why tuna can affect gout
Purines occur naturally in the body and in some foods. When the body breaks them down, it produces uric acid. If uric acid builds up, sharp crystals can form in and around joints, causing gout symptoms. Mayo Clinic and the CDC both include tuna among purine-rich seafood.
That means tuna can raise uric acid, but the effect of one food is only part of the picture. Your overall diet, health and treatment all matter.
Can you eat tuna if you have gout?
For many people, yes—in modest amounts. Mayo Clinic says people with gout can include small amounts of fish in their diets because seafood is nutritious. The Arthritis Foundation notes that cold-water fish such as tuna, salmon and trout can increase uric acid, while their heart-health benefits may outweigh gout risk when eaten in moderation.

Treat this as general guidance, not a personal serving prescription. The cited guidance does not set a single tuna-specific portion or frequency that is safe for everyone.
Is canned tuna different from fresh tuna?
The available guidance identifies tuna as a purine-containing seafood but does not establish separate gout rules for canned and fresh tuna. Product types and preparation can vary, so do not assume that canning removes the purine concern. If you are comparing products, consider sodium as well as portion size and how often you eat them; the cited sources do not provide a brand-by-brand sodium or purine comparison.

Should you avoid tuna during a gout flare?
The cited guidance does not establish a special tuna rule for an active flare. CDC advises limiting high-purine foods such as tuna to help reduce flares, but that is not the same as a universal ban. If a flare is occurring, follow your clinician’s treatment plan and ask whether your diet or medication needs adjustment, especially if flares recur or are severe.
How to fit tuna into a gout-conscious diet
- Keep portions and frequency moderate rather than treating tuna as an unlimited protein.
- Consider your overall eating pattern, not just one meal or ingredient.
- When comparing proteins, weigh purine content alongside saturated fat, cardiovascular considerations and sodium in the product.
- Discuss dietary choices with a clinician or registered dietitian if you have kidney disease, take medicines that affect uric acid, or continue to have flares.
Why diet does not replace gout treatment
Diet changes may help reduce triggers, but Mayo Clinic says diet alone is unlikely to lower blood uric acid enough to treat gout without medicine. The Arthritis Foundation likewise notes that dietary management does not always control gout and that medication can treat the underlying high uric acid. A clinician can assess your situation and discuss treatment options; do not stop or change prescribed medicine based on tuna intake.
