Yes. Tuna have multiple fins and they do have scales, although scale coverage varies by species. In skipjack tuna, for example, scales are concentrated on the corselet—the band behind the head—and along the lateral line rather than covering the fish uniformly.

What fins does a tuna have?

NOAA’s tuna anatomy guide identifies several fins on a tuna’s body:

  • Dorsal fins: the first and second fins along the back
  • Pectoral fins: paired fins on the sides behind the head
  • Pelvic fins: paired fins on the underside
  • Anal fin: the fin on the underside near the tail
  • Caudal fin: the tail fin that provides powerful propulsion
  • Finlets: small dorsal and ventral fins between the main fins and the tail

Some tuna can retract their dorsal and pelvic fins while swimming, helping reduce drag. Fin shape and position also differ between species.

Examples of fin differences

  • Albacore: has exceptionally long pectoral fins, described by NOAA as reaching at least half the body length in its Pacific albacore resource.
  • Pacific bluefin: has pectoral-fin tips that do not reach the front of the second dorsal fin.

Do tuna have scales?

Yes. A NOAA scientific description of tunas states that the body is covered with small scales. However, the scales may be tiny and difficult to see, and their distribution is not identical in every tuna species.

How skipjack scales are arranged

NOAA describes both Pacific and Atlantic skipjack tuna as having scales on the corselet and lateral line. The corselet is a thicker band of scales behind the head, while the lateral line is a faint sensory line running along each side of the fish. This means skipjack have scales concentrated in particular areas; they are not accurately described as completely scaleless.

Why fins and scales matter for identification

Visible anatomy helps distinguish tuna species. NOAA’s Atlantic tuna identification guide uses features such as pectoral-fin reach, along with other body characteristics, in its identification flowchart. Comparing the length and position of the fins can therefore be more useful than relying on a general impression of the fish’s shape.

Bottom line

Tuna are finned, scaled fish. They possess several specialized fins for maneuvering and fast swimming, and their bodies carry small scales. Because scale coverage differs among species—especially in skipjack—avoid saying that all tuna are either fully scaled in the same way or completely scaleless.
