The viral footage linked to Dolph Volker was filmed at the Cheetah Experience, a sanctuary in Bloemfontein, South Africa—not in a forest with a wild cheetah. The popular story about Eden napping beside Volker is often repeated, but the exact date and full details of their first encounter are not firmly established by the strongest available records. The setting matters: sanctuary footage of animals familiar with people is not evidence that wild cheetahs are safe to approach.
Where was the viral cheetah footage filmed?
Africa Check traced the widely shared clip to a longer video Dolph Volker posted in early 2019, titled “Do Cheetahs Prefer Cold Hard Concrete Or Warm Blankets Pillow & A Friend?” The footage was made at the Cheetah Experience in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Africa Check also reported that Reuters received confirmation of the location from the centre. The viral caption, “A family of cheetah sleep with the forest guard every night,” was false for this footage. Africa Check’s fact-check
Volker has appeared in other footage from the same sanctuary. A separate Storyful video record from July 1, 2016, describes his reunion with Gabriel, a 10-month-old cheetah cub, after Volker had been away for more than a year. Gabriel’s reunion is a different episode and animal; it should not be treated as documentation of Eden’s nap story. Storyful’s video record
Was Eden a wild cheetah?
The footage examined by Africa Check came from a sanctuary, not a wild encounter. The animals in that setting were accustomed to human contact, so their behavior around Volker cannot be used to predict how a wild cheetah will behave.

The familiar Eden account says she approached Volker while he rested under a tree. A secondary article dated October 1, 2026, repeats that version, but it does not provide a dated primary record of the meeting. The exact first-meeting date, the full chronology of Volker and Eden’s relationship, and the first viral posting of Eden-specific footage are not established in the available accounts. Is it normal or safe for cheetahs to nap beside people?
The video shows a particular sanctuary interaction, not a safe or ordinary way to behave around wild cheetahs. Cheetah Conservation Fund guidance on release candidates emphasizes that animals must not become so comfortable with people that they depend on them or are likely to enter human-wildlife conflict. Candidate selection, pre-release preparation, and monitoring after release are part of that work. Cheetah Conservation Fund release guidance

- Do not approach, touch, feed, or try to nap beside a wild cheetah.
- Do not interpret a calm animal in a sanctuary video as proof that a cheetah is tame or predictable.
- Enjoy close-contact footage as a record of a managed setting, not as an example to imitate.
What does the story have to do with cheetah conservation?
Cheetah Conservation Fund identifies habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal pet and wildlife trade among the main threats to cheetahs. It also reports a historical estimate of 7,100 adult and adolescent cheetahs, attributed to Durant and colleagues’ 2017 work and published on CCF’s history page in 2020. That figure is not a 2026 census, does not describe Eden, and should not be read as a current count. Cheetah Conservation Fund’s history page CCF’s conservation context
Sanctuary care for animals that cannot be released and carefully managed rehabilitation for selected release candidates are not interchangeable. CCF’s guidance describes release as a process that requires suitable candidates and preparation; a viral nap clip alone says nothing about an individual animal’s release prospects or current status.
