On Thursday, March 10, 2016, whale watchers off Dana Point in Orange County, California, filmed a large group of common dolphins racing and repeatedly leaping together. The Los Angeles Times described the spectacle as a “dolphin stampede” the following day. It was a historical sighting, not a recent event.
What is a dolphin stampede?
“Dolphin stampede” is a descriptive term for a large group moving rapidly and in a coordinated-looking pattern. In the Dana Point footage, the dolphins were repeatedly jumping clear of the water, a behavior called porpoising.
Dave Anderson, owner of Captain Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari, told the Los Angeles Times that porpoising is dolphins’ fastest mode of travel and can reach 20 knots, or nearly 25 mph. That speed description was Anderson’s statement about the behavior; it was not an independently verified measurement from this encounter.
Where and when did it happen?
The sighting occurred off Dana Point, on California’s Orange County coast, on March 10, 2016. Ben Poston’s Los Angeles Times account was published March 11, 2016, and identified the animals as common dolphins.

How many dolphins were there?
Two records give different numbers, and neither source explains the discrepancy. They appear to refer to different counting contexts rather than providing a single definitive total.
| Source | Count | What the number represents |
|---|---|---|
| Dave Anderson, quoted by the Los Angeles Times (2016) | About 500 | His estimate of the animals captured in the video |
| Captain Dave’s March 10 sightings log | 225 common dolphins | The operator’s daily sightings entry for that date; the log does not identify this as the video count |
The most accurate account is therefore “about 500 in the video, according to Anderson,” alongside “225 common dolphins in the operator’s daily log.” The available records do not establish why those figures differ.

Why were the dolphins jumping?
The contemporaneous report did not establish a cause. Anderson said this kind of jumpy behavior can happen at any time and without a known reason. Nothing in the available account shows that this group was fleeing orcas, hunting a particular prey species, or intentionally following the boat.
Porpoising can make a fast-moving group especially dramatic to watch, but the footage alone does not identify the dolphins’ motivation.

How large is the Southern California dolphin population?
The Los Angeles Times reported Anderson’s 2016 estimate that about 450,000 common dolphins swim off Southern California. That figure should be read as an attributed estimate from 2016, not as a current census or an independently verified population survey.
What the footage can—and cannot—show
- Established: common dolphins were moving together off Dana Point on March 10, 2016, with many repeatedly porpoising.
- Reported: Anderson estimated roughly 500 animals appeared in the video.
- Recorded separately: Captain Dave’s log listed 225 common dolphins for the day.
- Unknown: the precise reason for the behavior and the method behind Anderson’s regional population estimate.
Anderson called stampedes “one of those most amazing things I’ve seen in 20 years of whale watching” and described the experience as “completely exhilarating.” Those comments convey the event’s impact without resolving its biological cause.
