Most need daily exercise, close companionship, patient reward-based training, secure outdoor control, coat-dependent grooming and consistent dental care. PetMD gives a typical lifespan estimate of 11–15 years, but that figure is inferred from parent-breed expectations rather than a Dorkie-specific population study.
What is a Dorkie?
A Dorkie combines a Dachshund and a Yorkshire Terrier. The American Kennel Club does not recognize the mix as an official breed, so there is no AKC standard defining its appearance or behavior. As Sarah Mouton Dowdy, MA, writes in PetMD’s guide, “The Dorkie dog isn’t recognized as an official American Kennel Club breed, so there’s no set breed standard describing its appearance or temperament.”
The parents provide useful context, not guarantees. Dachshunds were developed to pursue prey underground, while Yorkshire Terriers worked as ratters. A Dorkie may therefore be clever, determined, scent-focused and vocal as well as affectionate and playful.
Dorkie appearance, size and coat
There is no fixed Dorkie adult weight, height, color or coat. Dachshunds occur in standard and miniature sizes and in smooth, wirehaired and longhaired varieties; Yorkies are known for a small frame and long, silky hair. A Dorkie can inherit any combination of those influences, and littermates may not look alike.

Dorkie temperament and behavior
PetMD characterizes Dorkies as smart, feisty, affectionate, playful and social, with a capacity for frequent loud barking. Their hunting ancestry can produce prey drive, digging, scent-following and a tendency to ignore a recall when something interesting appears.
Is a Dorkie a good dog?
A Dorkie can be a good fit for a household that wants an interactive small dog and can provide daily activity, companionship, training and supervision. It is a less suitable choice for someone seeking a quiet, independent pet or a dog that can be left alone for long periods. Individual temperament and early socialization still matter more than the label.

Children and other pets
Because Dorkies are small, rough handling can cause accidental injury. Closely supervise interactions with very young children and teach children to handle the dog gently. Do not assume every Dorkie will be easy with children, cats or other dogs; introductions, socialization and the individual dog’s behavior determine the outcome.
Exercise, training and daily life
- Provide daily physical exercise plus short, varied mental-work sessions such as scent games, food puzzles and basic-obedience practice.
- Use a leash or a genuinely secure fenced area outdoors. Prey drive and scent interest can lead to sudden pursuit.
- Train with consistent, patient, reward-based methods. Barking, house-training and recall deserve early, repeated practice.
- Plan meaningful human company every day; many Dorkies seek attention and may become frustrated without interaction.
Back protection
Until a veterinarian advises otherwise, avoid encouraging repeated high-impact jumping from furniture or unsafe stairs. A long-backed dog should be lifted with the chest and hindquarters supported rather than allowed to launch or twist from awkward heights.

Grooming a Dorkie
Grooming depends on the coat the individual inherits. Shorter coats may need less frequent brushing, while longer or thicker hair needs brushing often enough to prevent mats, especially around the ears, legs, chest and tail. Check the skin, ears, nails and coat during each session. Ask a veterinarian about bathing frequency; overly frequent baths can dry the skin.
Dental care
Small dogs, including both parent breeds, are particularly prone to periodontal disease. Build daily tooth brushing into the routine with dog-safe toothpaste and a gradual introduction. Ask your veterinary team to examine the mouth and recommend professional cleaning or other care when needed.

Dorkie lifespan and health considerations
How long do Dorkies live?
PetMD lists a typical Dorkie life expectancy of 11–15 years. This is an estimate based on parent-breed expectations, not the result of a published Dorkie-specific survival study, so an individual dog may fall outside that range.
Conditions to discuss with a veterinarian
- Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD): Dachshunds are predisposed to disc problems, which can cause pain, nerve damage or paralysis. The reviewed evidence does not quantify risk specifically for Dorkies.
- Patellar luxation: This is more common in small breeds. Limping or a hopping gait warrants veterinary assessment.
- Tracheal collapse and liver shunt: These are possible Yorkshire Terrier–associated concerns, not diagnoses or certainties in a Dorkie.
- Bloat/GDV: Unproductive retching, a swollen abdomen, sudden restlessness, panting or drooling, and collapse require immediate emergency veterinary care.
- Periodontal disease: Daily home dental care and regular veterinary mouth checks are especially important.
No Dorkie-specific disease-prevalence figures or validated Dorkie screening protocol are established in the reviewed material. Discuss the individual dog’s history, examination findings and preventive-care plan with a veterinarian.

Feeding and weight management
Choose a complete diet with veterinary guidance, considering AAFCO nutritional standards, life stage, size, activity and health. Have a veterinarian set portions and reassess body condition; both parent breeds can be affected by obesity. Keep treats at no more than 10% of the daily diet unless your veterinary team gives different instructions.
Choosing or adopting a Dorkie
Since appearance and behavior are not standardized, evaluate the individual dog rather than buying for a promised “perfect” Dorkie type. Ask to see parent information where available, vaccination and veterinary records, known health history, observed adult size, coat-care needs and behavior around people and animals. A responsible rescue or breeder should answer questions plainly and allow you to assess the dog’s temperament and living conditions.
