Heel’s Roam 350 can set a wireless boundary around the person carrying its remote, so there is no leash line to snag on brush or wrap around legs. But it is not a leash in the ordinary sense: it is an electronic collar system that can automatically warn and correct a dog, including with optional static stimulation. It does not physically restrain a dog or make off-leash walking risk-free.
What Heel’s “virtual dog leash” does
Heel announced the Roam 350 in 2024 and calls it the world’s first virtual dog leash. That “world’s first” description is the company’s claim, not an independently established fact. The current product page describes the Roam 350 as an e-collar with a wireless boundary that moves with the handler. (New Atlas; Heel.)
The distinction matters. A physical leash restrains a dog mechanically. A GPS fence usually defines a fixed geographic zone. A conventional training collar generally gives the handler manual controls. Roam 350 instead measures the dog collar’s proximity to a handheld remote, which the owner carries. The selected distance acts as a moving boundary centered on the handler—not a barrier that follows property lines, terrain, roads, or other hazards.
How the moving boundary works
- The owner carries the remote, and the dog wears the Roam collar.
- The owner selects a boundary distance. Heel currently lists settings of 10, 25, 75, 150, and 750 feet.
- Heel’s proprietary Autoprox technology measures the collar’s proximity to the remote.
- As the dog reaches the boundary, the system gives a tone warning. If the dog remains at or beyond it, a second tone is followed by the selected correction.
Heel lists tone, vibration, and optional static correction. Its product page says static can be selected instead of vibration. The owner can also use the remote’s manual controls. These are manufacturer descriptions; the available information does not establish independent testing of correction timing, boundary accuracy, or reliability in different environments. - The Heel Roam 350 uses patent-pending AUTOPROX technology to automatically measure the distance between your dog’s collar and the remote, helping keep your dog near while still allowing freedom to explore. With adjustable virtual leash distances of 10, 25, 75, 150, or 750 feet, you can easily tailor the range for different activities like walks, hiking, biking, or off-leash training adventures.
- The all-new IP67-rated Collar is submersible up to 3 feet and fully backward compatible with all Heel Roam 350 remotes, while the remote itself is not IP rated and should be kept dry during use.
- Supports up to three dog collars with one remote and operates without GPS, cellular service, or subscription fees, delivering reliable performance with no subscription costs.
- Offers customizable training options including tone, vibration, and optional static correction with four adjustable levels, allowing you to tailor training to your dog’s needs. For added peace of mind, static correction automatically defaults to OFF every time the remote powers on to help prevent accidental delivery.
- Designed and manufactured in the USA by Fleetwood Electronics, with over 50 years of experience focused on quality, reliability, and performance.

Is it a shock collar?
Roam 350 is an e-collar, and it is capable of delivering static stimulation. That setting is optional according to Heel, but it is an important part of what the system can do—not a detail to overlook when evaluating it. The device also offers tone and vibration. Owners who do not want a product capable of static correction may prefer a physical leash, long line, or training approach without that capability.

Whether any correction method is suitable depends on the individual dog and how the equipment is introduced and used. Do not assume the product is humane or appropriate for every dog based only on marketing language. If a dog is fearful, reactive, anxious, elderly, medically vulnerable, or likely to find electronic correction distressing, consult a veterinarian or qualified trainer before considering an e-collar.
Who might find it useful—and who should avoid relying on it
It may be worth considering for an owner who wants a moving boundary for outdoor activity, has a dog with reliable recall and basic obedience, is prepared to supervise closely, and will carry a physical leash as backup. The lack of a GPS or cellular requirement may be useful where those services are unavailable, but it does not prove that the wireless link will work reliably in every setting.

It is a poor choice as a substitute for physical control if the dog has unreliable recall or a strong prey drive; the route includes traffic, cliffs, livestock, dangerous wildlife, or crowds; local rules require a leash; or the dog does not fit the collar. It is also a poor fit for an owner who expects a device to physically stop a dog, cannot keep the equipment charged and monitored, or rejects static-stimulation capability.
The collar may fit some small dogs, but the evidence does not establish a formal minimum weight. New Atlas reported that the smallest dog Heel had seen wearing one was a six-month-old Rat Terrier weighing about 8–12 pounds; that is an anecdote, not a certified minimum. Check neck circumference, fit, weight, age, breed suitability, and temperament with Heel and, where appropriate, a veterinarian or trainer.

Important limits and failure questions
- No physical restraint: A dog can ignore a warning, cross the boundary, or keep moving away. The system cannot guarantee recall or prevent chasing people, wildlife, vehicles, or another animal.
- Boundary is not a safe-zone map: A selected radius may place a dog in a road, beyond a property boundary, or near another hazard. The system does not account for whether the space between dog and handler is safe or passable.
- Wireless behavior is not fully established: Heel says the system does not need GPS or cellular service. That is not a guarantee against interference, obstructions, hardware problems, or range limitations. The available reporting does not independently verify performance in dense forest, around buildings or vehicles, through terrain, or when a remote is stowed in a bag.
- Power or connection failure: The available coverage does not establish what happens if either battery dies, the link is lost, or the collar battery is low. It also does not specify the failure-state correction behavior or how quickly the remote reports a lost connection. Do not assume a fail-safe; ask Heel or consult the current manual before use.
- Water affects the two pieces differently: Heel rates the collar IP67, but the remote is not IP-rated. A dog may be able to enter water while the person carrying the controller must keep it dry.
- Leash laws still matter: A wireless boundary does not exempt an owner from local leash requirements. Heel itself cautions that the system is not foolproof and calls for responsible ownership.
Keep a charged phone or remote as applicable, monitor the dog continuously, and bring a physical leash that lets you regain control immediately. A wireless boundary should not be the only safeguard near hazards.
How it compares with practical alternatives
- Standard leash: Provides immediate mechanical restraint and is the clearest choice where a leash is required or close control is essential.
- Long line: Gives a dog more room to explore while preserving a physical connection. It can tangle, but it gives the handler a direct way to stop or retrieve the dog.
- Recall training: Builds a behavior that remains useful across walks and outdoor settings. Training does not remove the need for restraint where safety or local rules require it.
- Secure dog park or fenced area: Offers off-leash space within a physical enclosure, subject to the facility’s rules and the dog’s suitability for that setting.
- Fixed GPS or wireless fence: Defines a boundary tied to a location rather than one that moves with the handler. These systems have different coverage and setup requirements and should not be treated as equivalent to a physical fence.
- Traditional training collar: May offer manual training controls, but it does not create the same automatically moving proximity boundary.
These are categories, not product endorsements; the available evidence does not support a current, model-by-model comparison or pricing for competing devices.
