Firewood and fresh-cut Christmas trees can bring insects and spiders indoors, but most are harmless outdoor hitchhikers—not the start of a household infestation. Warm indoor air can wake dormant insects or hatch eggs; vacuum the ones that emerge, and prevent repeat surprises by inspecting logs and trees before bringing them inside.
Which bugs can come inside on firewood or a Christmas tree?
The two sources carry different kinds of hitchhikers. Firewood offers shelter beneath bark and in wood galleries; a Christmas tree can hold insects, spiders, and egg masses on its branches and foliage.
| Source | Where they hide | Possible hitchhikers | Usual household response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firewood | Under loose bark, in galleries, or among logs | Wood-boring and bark beetles, spiders, wood cockroaches, sowbugs, pillbugs, millipedes, ants, wasps, flies, and other shelter-seekers | Keep the pile outdoors; inspect and brush logs before use, and sweep or vacuum anything that emerges. |
| Fresh-cut tree | On stems and foliage, beneath branches, or in egg masses | Aphids, spiders, spider mites, adelgids, bark beetles, ants, beetle larvae, and mantid egg cases | Shake and inspect the tree outside; vacuum loose insects indoors or remove a branch or egg case. |
These lists describe possibilities, not a prediction that every log or tree is infested. North Carolina State Extension describes Christmas-tree pests as rare in most years, but does not provide a national prevalence rate: North Carolina State Extension.
Why do bugs appear after the wood or tree comes indoors?
Some insects or eggs remain dormant outdoors through cold weather. Indoor warmth can activate them, so they may emerge or hatch after a log or tree is brought inside. That timing can make an ordinary outdoor hitchhiker look like a new infestation, but warmth alone does not mean it can establish in the home.

Are these bugs dangerous to people, pets, or the house?
Usually, no. Iowa State University Extension says insects and spiders brought in on a fresh-cut tree will not harm the tree, house, furnishings, or occupants, and says the emerging insects cannot bite or sting. Purdue Extension likewise notes that most firewood pests are harmless: Purdue Extension.

Wood-boring beetles develop in green, dying, or recently killed wood. Although bark beetles may leave powdery frass beneath loose bark, most firewood pests do not attack finished or dried wood inside a home, according to Purdue Extension. Iowa State says bark beetles emerging indoors are not a threat to people, furniture, or the house structure.
Termites and carpenter ants merit more attention around an outdoor woodpile than from one log carried in for a fire. Termites need access to soil, while carpenter ants prefer damp, unsound wood. A persistent problem in a damp woodpile is different from a few insects emerging from a log; the latter does not by itself establish an indoor infestation.

How to prevent bugs from coming in with firewood
Keep firewood stored outside, dry, and away from the house. These steps reduce shelter around the home and limit the time logs spend indoors before burning.
- Stack logs off the ground and cover them to protect them from rain.
- Keep the pile away from walls and the home.
- Use the oldest wood first rather than burying it under new logs.
- Before carrying a log indoors, knock or brush it and inspect for insects, loose bark, or egg sacs.
- Bring inside only what you need for immediate use—ideally a day or two of supply.
- Keep firewood outdoors until it is ready to burn; do not store a large supply inside.
A raised, covered firewood rack can help keep logs off soil and organized away from the house. It helps with storage; it does not exterminate insects.

How to check a real Christmas tree for bugs
- Shake the tree outdoors. This can dislodge loose insects before the tree comes inside.
- Inspect likely hiding places. Look beneath branches and along foliage, around the trunk, and for conspicuous egg masses.
- Remove what you find. Vacuum loose insects indoors. If an egg case or affected branch is visible, remove it and place it outdoors where appropriate. Check local invasive-species guidance before moving egg masses.
Common possibilities include aphids and spiders, as well as spider mites, adelgids, ants, beetle larvae, bark beetles, and mantid egg cases. Oklahoma State University Extension reports that a praying-mantis egg sac may contain up to 200 eggs: Oklahoma State University Extension (2023).

- Vacuum or sweep them up. Iowa State’s practical advice for tree insects is to vacuum them and discard the vacuum contents: Iowa State University Extension.
- Remove visible egg masses or affected branches. Handle a conspicuous egg case cautiously and follow local guidance before moving it outdoors.
- Do not spray firewood with insecticide. Iowa State says spraying infested firewood has no practical benefit and is not advised; treated wood can produce fumes when burned: Iowa State University Extension.
- Skip routine pesticide treatment of fresh-cut trees. Iowa State Extension does not recommend it for these generally harmless hitchhikers: Iowa State University Extension.
Finding a few insects after bringing in a log or tree is usually a cleanup issue, not evidence that the house has become their habitat. If insects keep appearing beyond the original wood or tree, assess that as a separate household pest problem rather than assuming it is still caused by the hitchhikers.
