When three foster puppies were diagnosed with parvovirus, Tori Hodgson helped care for them despite her fear of needles. Best Friends Animal Society reports that, with its veterinary team directing treatment and coordinator Kayla Harmon guiding Tori, the puppies recovered and were adopted. Her story shows the commitment and household work fostering can involve—not a treatment plan for other dogs.
How the puppies became sick
In a feature published May 22, 2025, Best Friends Animal Society describes Tori and her husband, Craig, as experienced foster volunteers: they had previously fostered a beagle named Cherry and later adopted her. Tori then took in three puppies from a litter of five while Best Friends cared for their mother. Another foster caregiver looked after the other two puppies.
A day after the puppies arrived, Hamilton became lethargic and developed vomiting and diarrhea. The caregiver looking after the other two puppies reported symptoms in them as well. Best Friends says its veterinary team examined the puppies and diagnosed parvovirus, a highly contagious disease that can be fatal in unvaccinated dogs. Best Friends’ account of the case is an organizational feature, not an independent medical record.
What Tori did, under veterinary direction
Best Friends reports that its veterinary team treated the litter and included subcutaneous fluids in the care plan to help prevent dehydration. Tori was afraid of needles, but learned to administer the fluids with guidance from Kayla Harmon, a foster program coordinator. Over the following five days, she gave the puppies fluids, probiotic paste and other medications as directed in the account.

This was care arranged and guided by Best Friends’ veterinary team. It is not a guide to treating parvovirus at home: suspected parvo requires prompt veterinary attention, and treatment decisions belong to veterinary professionals.
Fostering also meant managing the home
Tori kept the puppies separate from her resident dogs and followed a strict cleaning routine. Best Friends says she washed bedding and towels twice a day, mopped the puppies’ area, washed her hands frequently and changed clothes after handling them. The account makes clear that fostering sick puppies involved sustained cleaning and separation as well as hands-on care.

The reported outcome—and what it does not prove
Best Friends reports that after two weeks the puppies were healthy and returned to its pet resource center, where they were soon adopted. Two were adopted by friends of Tori and Craig. That is the outcome for this litter as described by the organization; the feature gives no numerical success rate and cannot establish what will happen in another case.
For Tori, the decision to continue came down to the commitment she had made. “Not only do you get attached to these precious babies quickly, but I had also made a commitment to help,” she said. The story is one volunteer’s experience, not a promise that fostering will be easy or that every puppy will recover.
