Beewise launched BeeHome 4 on February 14, 2023 as a smaller, lighter robotic hive for commercial beekeeping. The solar-powered, enclosed unit combines standard Langstroth frames with cameras, sensors, climate control, feeding equipment, machine learning and precision robotics. It is designed to help professional beekeepers and growers detect threats and intervene sooner—not to replace bees, habitat or human beekeepers.
BeeHome 4 is generally accessed through pollination, leasing or managed-subscription services rather than bought off the shelf. Beewise says the technology operates in North America. The launch announcement and current FAQ describe the commercial model and capabilities.
The commercial problem BeeHome 4 targets
Commercial honeybee colonies face seasonal losses from Varroa mites and the viruses they transmit, pesticides, poor nutrition, extreme temperatures, transportation stress and labor shortages. A beekeeper may have colonies spread over large distances and still need to inspect, feed or treat them during a narrow crop-bloom window.
That is different from colony collapse disorder (CCD), a specific phenomenon in which worker bees disappear while the queen, brood and food remain. Modern managed-colony losses are usually multifactorial, so BeeHome 4 should not be described as a cure for CCD or for the broader decline of wild pollinators.

For almond, fruit, vegetable, seed and nut growers, the operational issue is pollination reliability: enough strong colonies must be in the right place at the right time. BeeHome 4 is intended to make that managed-colony supply more observable and responsive.
What BeeHome 4 is
BeeHome 4 is a large, forklift-movable enclosure containing multiple conventional colonies. Product-history material says it uses standard Langstroth frames, while launch coverage describes a smaller and lighter unit than earlier BeeHome versions. Published capacity varies: the product history says up to ten colonies, whereas Beewise’s 2024 impact report uses eight colonies per BeeHome 4. Treat capacity as configuration-dependent rather than a single guaranteed number.
- Power and structure: solar-powered, enclosed and insulated, with climate management.
- Colony hardware: standard frames that a beekeeper can still remove and manipulate manually.
- Automation: cameras, environmental sensors, software alerts and a robotic frame-handling mechanism.
- Operations: remote monitoring and management through digital tools, with field or manual intervention when needed.
Beewise introduced the company in 2018, according to its product history and a VentureBeat profile. The BeeHome 4 launch announcement is dated February 14, 2023: PR Newswire.
How the AI and robotics operate
Monitoring inside the enclosure
Cameras and sensors observe colony activity and conditions such as temperature and humidity. Machine-learning software analyzes those signals for abnormal conditions, threats or behavior associated with problems such as swarming. The European Commission’s project description and Arm’s technology profile provide context on the sensing and robotics approach: CORDIS and Arm.
Environmental control and feeding
Climate-control equipment helps regulate the internal environment during heat or cold. Internal feeding equipment can deliver supplemental nutrients when directed. Feeding can bridge a forage shortage, but it cannot replace diverse forage, habitat or sound farm management.

Targeted interventions
A robotic mechanism can manipulate frames and perform selected interventions. Beewise also describes a heat chamber for chemical-free Varroa-mite treatment, and a capability to close or isolate entrances when certain external threats are detected. These are targeted tools, not proof that every pesticide, pathogen or mite-related problem will be detected or eliminated.
Remote control with a human fallback
Beekeepers can receive alerts and manage operations remotely, while retaining physical access to the frames. Beewise says its team is notified when equipment malfunctions and can respond remotely or in the field; manual hive management remains possible. “Autonomous” therefore means automated monitoring and selected actions, not a colony that never needs a beekeeper. Details are in the Beewise FAQ.
Threats the platform may address
Varroa mites
Heat treatment is one of BeeHome’s clearest differentiators. Beewise promotes it as a chemical-free way to kill or suppress Varroa mites (product history; media materials). Varroa control is not the same as eliminating disease: mites transmit or amplify viruses, and colony health also depends on queens, nutrition, genetics, pathogens and management.

Pesticides
Company and interview material says the system can detect harmful pesticide conditions and close or isolate a hive (VentureBeat; CORDIS). The available evidence does not establish universal detection, prevention of every exposure or neutralization of pesticide risk across a farm.
Weather and disasters
Insulation and climate control are intended to moderate internal conditions. Beewise also promotes protection against heat, cold, fires and flooding (FAQ; VentureBeat). A unit is not immune to wildfire, flood, power loss, connectivity failure or infrastructure damage.

Forage gaps and swarming
Supplemental feeding can help during inadequate forage. Machine vision and AI are described as identifying colony conditions, including signs associated with swarming. Detection depends on the models, sensors and behaviors visible inside the enclosure.
What has been reported at scale
Beewise’s deployment figures measure different things: a unit is hardware, a colony is a biological population, acres represent grower coverage, and growers are customers. They should not be treated as interchangeable.

The 70% figure must not be rewritten as “70% of bees survive.” It could represent a relative reduction against a comparison or modeled conventional-hive baseline; the reviewed materials do not fully disclose a peer-reviewed study design, sample size or independently audited control group. Likewise, the 80%, 50% and 90% figures are Beewise claims, not universal results for every crop, region or season. Sources include the company home page, 2024 Impact Report and 2023 launch release.
In June 2025, Beewise announced a $50 million Series D, nearly $170 million in stated total financing, thousands of AI-powered robotic hives in the field, hundreds of growers and more than 300,000 acres served annually. Those are company-reported business figures, not an independent performance audit: Series D announcement.

Questions to ask before adopting it
- Is loss reduction measured against your own baseline, a matched conventional-hive control group or a company model?
- Will the service deliver enough colonies of the required strength during the crop’s bloom window?
- Can your existing frames, forklifts, transport and extraction processes be retained?
- Which inspection, feeding, treatment and transport tasks disappear, and which shift to Beewise technicians?
- What happens during solar or grid-power loss, connectivity failure, sensor drift, false alerts or robotic-arm failure?
- How quickly can a beekeeper gain physical access, and who handles safety during manual intervention?
- Who owns colony-health data, how long is it retained and can it be exported?
- What happens after fire, flood, vandalism, theft, unauthorized movement or transport damage?
- Does the service geography, fee and support model fit your operation?
Centralizing several colonies in one enclosure may simplify inspection but can concentrate risk if the unit is damaged or inaccessible. Automation reduces routine labor, not biological judgment. A robotic enclosure also cannot restore habitat, improve queen genetics, solve forage scarcity, replace responsible pesticide policy or address every pathogen.
Who it fits—and who it does not
- Large commercial growers: worth evaluating when reliable, timed pollination is more valuable than owning hive hardware; demand documented comparisons and service-level commitments.
- Commercial beekeepers: potentially useful for labor-intensive operations that accept vendor dependence and a leasing or network relationship.
- Small or hobbyist beekeepers: poor fit because the system is not a retail smart hive and is not offered as direct-purchase equipment.
- Property managers: Bees for Buildings may fit sites seeking managed education, engagement and sustainability metrics, subject to placement and local support.
- Researchers: useful as an automation platform to study remote monitoring, but company-reported outcomes should be separated from independently validated evidence.
The Bottom Line
BeeHome 4 is an ambitious commercial platform that combines enclosed hive management, AI monitoring and robotics to reduce losses in managed honeybee colonies. Its strongest percentages remain Beewise-reported, capacity descriptions vary, pricing is not public, and access is service-based. It can complement—not replace—skilled beekeepers, healthy forage, habitat protection and responsible pesticide and disease management.
