How Big Is a Fisher Cat’s Territory? Typical Home-Range Sizes

Female fishers typically use 15–20 km², while males use 40–50 km². Learn why measured home ranges vary and how to interpret the figures.

A fisher’s typical home range is about 15–20 km² (5.8–7.7 mi²) for females and 40–50 km² (15.4–19.3 mi²) for males, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (2010). Male ranges are commonly two to three times larger. These figures are useful rules of thumb, not fixed territory boundaries: measured ranges vary with region, habitat, season, and study method.

What does “territory” mean for a fisher?

“Fisher cat” is a common name for the fisher (Pekania pennanti), a member of the weasel family, not a cat. When researchers report how much land a fisher uses, they generally measure its home range: the area it uses over time. That is not necessarily a defended territory with a clear, exclusive border. Home ranges can overlap, particularly between animals of different sexes and depending on social context.

How large are fisher home ranges?

The most practical general estimate is 15–20 km² (5.8–7.7 mi²) for a female and 40–50 km² (15.4–19.3 mi²) for a male. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (2010) describes these as typical averages and says male home ranges are usually two to three times the size of female ranges.

Those averages sit within a much broader North American range. A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service review (2011) reports estimates of 4–53 km² (1.5–20.5 mi²) for females and 16–122 km² (6.2–47.1 mi²) for males. The spread reflects differences among animals, places, study periods, and measurement methods—not a single standard range every fisher follows.

What do regional studies show?

Northern Rocky Mountains

A 2024 study in Movement Ecology reported a median home range of 22.4 km² (8.6 mi²), with individual estimates from 9.3 to 62.4 km² (3.6 to 24.1 mi²). A median is the midpoint of the study’s estimates, not a claim that all fishers in the region use that amount of land. Compare it with other figures only with attention to sex, study period, sample size, and the method used to estimate area.

British Columbia

The Government of British Columbia species account, accessed in 2026, reports an annual female mean of 49.8 km² (19.2 mi²) and an annual male mean of 314.8 km² (121.5 mi²) for one monitored male. The male figure describes that individual, not a typical male fisher or a population-wide average; it should not be compared directly with a regional average as though both represented the same sample.

Why do reported ranges differ?

A fisher’s range is not a fixed acreage requirement. Researchers may find different areas because animals differ and because studies cover different landscapes and time periods. Estimates can also change with the analytical method. Minimum convex polygon (MCP), fixed-kernel, and autocorrelation-corrected kernel approaches do not necessarily produce equivalent areas.

  • Sex: Male home ranges are generally larger than female ranges.
  • Geography and habitat: Local conditions and the distribution of resources differ among study areas.
  • Season and study period: The area estimated depends on when and how long an animal was tracked.
  • Individual behavior and density: Not every animal uses the landscape in the same way, and ranges may overlap.
  • Estimator and sample: A study’s method and the number and identity of tracked animals affect what its reported average or range means.

When comparing two reported numbers, check the animals’ sex, location, season or study period, sample size, and estimator. Without those details, a numerical comparison can suggest more precision than the studies support.

How far does a fisher roam?

A home-range area describes land used over time; it does not give a single travel distance or mean that the fisher walks the boundary. For scale, a square measuring 15 km² would be about 3.9 km (2.4 mi) on each side, while a 40 km² square would be about 6.3 km (3.9 mi) on each side. Real home ranges are not necessarily square, and this comparison is only a way to picture area—not a daily travel distance.
