RSPCA Queensland describes 15 litres as a minimum and 20 litres or more as ideal. Those figures are that organisation’s care recommendations, not a universally defined legal minimum. Because gravel, plants and decorations displace water, a tank labelled 20 litres will contain less than 20 litres when set up.
What tank size does a betta need?
Use this as a practical guide for one Siamese fighting fish:
| Tank capacity | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| 15 litres | RSPCA Queensland’s stated minimum for meeting a betta’s behavioural and psychological needs. |
| 20 litres (about 5 US gallons) | RSPCA Queensland’s ideal recommendation and the sensible target when buying a new tank. |
| More than 20 litres | Provides additional room and generally makes temperature and water conditions easier to keep stable, provided the tank is properly heated, filtered and maintained. |
Do not treat the tank label as usable water volume. Substrate and décor reduce the water actually available to the fish, so choosing a little more capacity can help you reach the intended filled volume.
Why a larger, wider aquarium is usually better
More stable water conditions
Larger volumes change temperature and water chemistry more slowly than very small volumes. That gives you a greater margin for error and makes routine care more predictable, although testing and maintenance are still necessary.

#1 Best Overall
- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
Better surface area for gas exchange
When two tanks hold a similar amount of water, prefer the one with a broader footprint rather than a tall, narrow design. A wider surface gives oxygen more area to diffuse into the water. RSPCA UK also notes that small decorative aquariums can lack stability, filtration space and adequate oxygen exchange.
Room for equipment and enrichment
A rectangular aquarium of at least 20 litres leaves practical space for a submersible heater, an appropriately sized filter, plants and secure hiding places without crowding the swimming area. Avoid bowls, jars and novelty tanks as betta homes.

- HALF MOON AQUARIUM KIT: Clear plastic, half-moon-shaped front allows for unobstructed viewing.
- IDEAL FOR BETTAS: Bettas require minimal maintenance and make great species for beginners.
- MOVABLE LIGHT: Energy-efficient LEDs can be positioned to light tank from above or below.
- CONVENIENT FEEDING: Clear canopy has a hole to make feeding fish easy.
- PERFECT FOR BEGINNERS: Small aquariums like this 1.1-gallon tank are a great way to get started in the freshwater fishkeeping hobby.
Equipment the tank must accommodate
- Heater: Use a submersible aquarium heater to maintain a stable tropical temperature. RSPCA Australia recommends 24–26°C for Siamese fighting fish.
- Filter: Choose a filter appropriate for the tank’s volume with adjustable flow. Bettas should not have to fight a strong current; set the output to a gentle flow.
- Thermometer: Check the actual water temperature rather than relying on the heater’s dial.
- Cover and safe layout: Leave room for the fish to reach the surface and secure décor so it cannot injure the betta or trap it.
Tank size is only one part of a safe setup
Cycle the aquarium before adding the fish
Run the new aquarium without the betta so beneficial biological filtration can establish. RSPCA UK recommends fishless cycling for a new tank.
Test water even when it looks clear
Clear water is not proof that conditions are safe. Keep freshwater ammonia and nitrite test kits and use them during cycling and routine care. Follow the kit instructions and respond to any detected toxins with appropriate maintenance rather than adding the fish immediately.

Maintain the conditions consistently
Stable temperature, gentle filtration and regular water-quality checks matter in a 20-litre tank just as they do in a larger one. Tank capacity cannot compensate for an uncycled aquarium or neglected maintenance.
How to choose between two candidate tanks
- Check usable capacity: Start with a nominal capacity of 20 litres or more, allowing for the space taken by substrate and decorations.
- Compare the footprint: If capacities are similar, select the wider rectangular model for greater surface area.
- Confirm equipment fit: Make sure a submersible heater and an appropriately sized, adjustable-flow filter can be installed without leaving the fish cramped.
- Reject unstable designs: Skip bowls, jars and tiny decorative aquariums that cannot provide stable conditions, adequate oxygen exchange or room for equipment.
- Plan the cycle: Set up, heat and filter the aquarium and complete fishless cycling before introducing the betta.
Does the general tropical-fish stocking rule apply?
RSPCA UK publishes a general guideline of 1.5–2 litres per centimetre of tropical-fish length. That is not a betta-specific tank-size rule, so it should not be used to reduce or override the betta guidance of 15 litres minimum and 20 litres or more ideal from RSPCA Queensland.

Buy a wide, rectangular tank of at least 20 litres (about 5 US gallons) for one betta. Treat 15 litres as the RSPCA Queensland minimum, not the target. Fit a heater set to 24–26°C, use a filter with gentle adjustable flow, and fishless-cycle the aquarium while testing ammonia and nitrite before the fish goes in.
