Yes. Burmese pythons have swallowed white-tailed deer and American alligators. They can do this because a snake’s mouth and jaws expand through flexible joints and soft tissues, allowing it to take prey much wider than its closed head appears. The practical limit depends on the prey’s shape and the individual snake’s gape—not simply on the animal’s length or weight.
How can a python swallow prey wider than its head?
A snake does not unhinge its jaw in the literal sense. Instead, the bones on either side of its lower jaw are joined at the front by stretchy tissue, and the skull’s movable joints and elastic skin let the mouth open far wider than it looks when closed. The snake’s two sides can advance alternately over prey, helping draw it inward.
What matters mechanically is whether the prey’s cross-section can pass through the snake’s maximum gape. A long, narrow animal may be easier to swallow than a shorter, bulkier animal of the same mass. That is why body weight alone cannot establish what a python can eat.
A 2022 study measuring Burmese pythons recorded a largest gape diameter of 22 cm in a snake with a 397 cm snout-to-vent length and a mass of 63.3 kg. The study found substantial differences in gape among pythons of similar length and mass, so there is no reliable one-size-fits-all rule for matching snake length to prey size. Jayne et al., 2022

What large animals have Burmese pythons actually eaten?
White-tailed deer
Deer are documented python prey in Florida. A 2016 report indexed by the U.S. Geological Survey described deer remains from three individual deer in one invasive Burmese python. USGS record
The gape study also describes a 4.5 kg python that had eaten a 2.65 kg deer, and a 14.3 kg python that regurgitated a 15.9 kg fawn. A 2025 case report documented a radio-tracked adult female vomiting a white-tailed deer after a cold event at Big Cypress National Preserve. Vomiting confirms the deer had been ingested; it does not show that the python fully digested it. Mangione et al., 2025

American alligators
Alligators also appear among prey identified in Florida python research. The gape study discusses a python-and-alligator observation, but some dimensions and masses associated with that case were estimated rather than directly measured. The Florida Museum notes that pythons occasionally eat alligators. These records show that predation occurs; they do not establish that pythons routinely overpower large adult alligators. Jayne et al., 2022 Florida Museum of Natural History
Are unusually large meals typical?
No. The extraordinary prey records should not be mistaken for the ordinary menu. A 2023 synthesis examined more than 2,200 diet samples from 1,716 pythons collected across southern Florida between 1995 and 2021. It identified 76 prey taxa, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and American alligators. Rodents were the most numerous prey: hispid cotton rats and black rats together accounted for 45% of identified diet items. Those are counts of items, not a measure of each prey type’s share of total food mass. Guzy et al., 2023

A deer or alligator can represent a large meal and contribute substantially to the food consumed even if such prey are much less numerous than rodents. The available field records do not establish how often wild pythons take prey near their anatomical limit.
What the biggest-prey estimates do—and do not—show
Researchers used gape measurements to model the kinds of prey a python might be able to swallow. The study’s extrapolation that Florida’s longest captured python might manage an 80 kg deer is a theoretical estimate, not a documented feeding event. Models help describe possible capacity; they should not be reported as observations. Jayne et al., 2022

- Observed or reported meal: evidence that a particular python ingested prey, such as prey remains or a documented regurgitation.
- Estimated case measurements: some values may be inferred rather than measured directly.
- Modeled capacity: an anatomical projection, not proof that a python has eaten that prey.
Why these feeding records matter in Florida
Burmese pythons are non-native and established in southern Florida. Their documented prey include native mammals and birds as well as reptiles. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service notes that predation can affect native wildlife and that pythons may compete with native predators by reducing prey availability. An individual meal demonstrates that predation happened; conclusions about broader population impacts rely on ecological evidence beyond a single feeding record. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
