Sea stars were called “starfish” because their arms radiate from a central body, creating a shape people recognized as a star. The name is centuries old: an Oxford English Dictionary entry cited by University of South Florida echinoderm specialist John Lawrence records the 1538 form sterrefyshe. The “fish” part reflects an older, broader use of the word for an animal that lives in water—not the modern scientific classification of fish.
Why “star” describes the animal
Most sea stars have a central disk with tapering arms extending outward in a stellate, or star-like, pattern. That obvious outline supplied the first part of the common name. The American Museum of Natural History explains that their pointed arms look like “stars fallen to the ocean floor.”
Five arms are typical, but the name does not mean every species has five. Depending on the species, sea stars may have six, seven, 10, 20 or more arms. Others have short, thick arms and a cushion-like outline rather than a sharply pointed star.
Why the older name included “fish”
In historical everyday English, fish could be used broadly for an animal living entirely in water. That older meaning appears in compounds such as “shellfish” and “starfish.” It did not require the animal to have the traits that modern biology uses to define a fish.

The earliest English evidence cited by Lawrence from the Oxford English Dictionary is “sterrefyshe” in 1538. Later forms developed into “star-fish” and then the familiar closed compound “starfish.” The word therefore began as a practical visual and habitat description, not as a scientific claim about anatomy.
Are starfish actually fish?
No. Sea stars are marine invertebrates in the echinoderm class Asteroidea. NOAA summarizes the distinction plainly: “Sea stars, commonly called, ‘starfish,’ are not fish.” They have no gills, scales or fins. Instead, they move and feed with a water-vascular system, a network of fluid-filled canals that operates their tube feet.

Fish are vertebrates with an internal backbone and typically breathe with gills. Sea stars belong to a separate branch of the animal kingdom, alongside sea urchins, sand dollars and other echinoderms. The scientific name Asteroidea is built from Greek-root elements associated with a star-like form.
Why many institutions say “sea star”
“Sea star” keeps the visual reference while avoiding the misleading suggestion that the animal is a fish. NOAA, the National Park Service and many museums and educators use it for that reason. “Starfish” remains a valid and widely understood common name, especially in everyday speech; “sea star” is more biologically precise.

Do all animals called starfish look like five-pointed stars?
No. The five-armed form is familiar because it is common, but arm number and body proportions vary substantially among species. Some have many slender arms, while others have reduced arms that blend into a broad disk. “Star” names the general radial body plan, not one fixed number of points.

What the name tells you—and what it does not
- It does tell you: the animal usually has arms or lobes radiating from a center and lives in the sea.
- It does not tell you: that the animal is a vertebrate fish, has gills, or has fins and scales.
- It reflects: a long-standing common name, documented in English at least as early as 1538.
- It does not require: exactly five arms; species vary from a few arms to many, and some have cushion-like forms.
