Water pressure passes through their fluid-rich bodies instead of collapsing them like a compressible gas pocket. Pressure still challenges their cells, however, so deep-living fish also rely on biological adaptations that help proteins and other processes keep working.
Why ocean pressure does not crush a fish’s body
Water pressure increases with depth by about one atmosphere for every 10 meters, according to NOAA Ocean Exploration. At 2,000 meters, that is approximately 200 atmospheres. The pressure is real, but a fish is not an empty container: its tissues and body fluids transmit pressure, and water itself is very difficult to compress.
Large gas-filled spaces are more vulnerable because gas compresses under pressure. Humans have air-filled lungs, and some fish have gas-filled swim bladders; many deep-sea organisms lack such large spaces. NOAA puts the distinction this way: “The impacts of pressure at ocean depth are less for organisms lacking gas-filled spaces like lungs or swim bladders.”
This does not mean a deep-sea fish has no pressure inside it or somehow cancels the surrounding pressure with stronger internal pressure. Rather, its body does not contain a large air cavity that can be squeezed shut. The flexible, fluid-filled body is a more useful analogy than a rigid, hollow shell.

How deep-sea fish protect their cells and proteins
A body that avoids collapse is only part of the answer. Hydrostatic pressure can interfere with enzyme activity, protein structure, and other cellular processes. Deep-sea animals need physiology and molecular structures that allow essential processes to continue under pressure.
TMAO helps stabilize proteins
One well-studied adaptation is trimethylamine N-oxide, or TMAO, a small molecule that helps stabilize proteins. A 2001 laboratory study found that TMAO reduced or counteracted pressure-related changes in selected proteins from deep-sea teleost fish. The results depended on the protein and experimental conditions, so TMAO is better understood as one part of pressure adaptation—not a universal shield against every effect of pressure.

In a 2014 study, measured TMAO levels in sampled teleost fish rose with depth: 40 mmol/kg at 0 meters and 261 mmol/kg at 4,850 meters. The same study measured 386 ± 18 mmol/kg in muscle from hadal snailfish sampled at 7,000 meters. These are measurements from the fish studied, not values that should be assumed for every deep-sea species.
More than one adaptation is involved
A 2019 study of a Mariana Trench snailfish described both physiological adaptations, including TMAO, and structural adaptations that help preserve protein activity under high pressure. The evidence points to a combination of traits rather than a single feature that makes all deep-sea fish pressure-proof.

Do deep-sea fish have a maximum depth?
Fish can live at extreme depths, but their pressure tolerance is not unlimited. A 2014 study used observed TMAO and osmolality measurements to predict an isosmotic state near 8,200 meters and proposed that biochemical constraints could make greater depths difficult for fish. That figure is a prediction based on measurements and extrapolation, not an experimentally confirmed boundary.
NOAA’s 2026 summary describes a suggested boundary between 8,200 and 8,400 meters for fish. It is still a proposed limit, not a proven cutoff for every species; the deepest ocean is also incompletely explored. NOAA notes that deep-sea snailfish survive extremely high water pressure, “but even their bodies have limits.”

What happens when a deep-sea fish is brought to the surface?
A deep-living animal can have problems when brought to the surface because its body is adapted to conditions at depth. NOAA notes that pressure-adapted organisms may experience metabolic problems after surfacing. That does not mean pressure was absent inside the fish while it lived deep in the ocean; it means that a rapid change in pressure can disrupt an organism adapted to a different environment.
