As water flows over their gills, oxygen moves into the blood and carbon dioxide moves out into the water. A few fish can also take in oxygen from the air.
What oxygen do fish take from water?
Fish use oxygen gas dissolved in water—not the oxygen atoms chemically bound in water molecules (H₂O). Dissolved oxygen enters the water from the atmosphere and through processes such as wind and wave action and photosynthesis. [UF/IFAS Extension]
How do gills move oxygen into a fish’s body?
- Water enters the mouth. In many fish, movements of the mouth and gill covers draw water in and push it across the gills. This is called buccal pumping.
- Water passes over the gills. Thin, blood-rich gill filaments provide a broad surface where gases can cross between water and blood.
- Oxygen enters the blood. Dissolved oxygen diffuses from the water into the blood, while carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the water.
- Blood carries oxygen to the body. Circulation distributes the absorbed oxygen to tissues.
In many fish, water and blood flow in opposite directions across the gills. This counter-current arrangement helps maintain the conditions needed for oxygen to keep moving from water into blood along the exchange surface; oxygen is not actively pumped into the blood. [Washington State University]
How do fish keep water flowing over their gills?
Buccal pumping
Many fish use movements of the mouth and gill covers to draw water in and drive it over the gills. This lets them ventilate their gills without swimming continuously.

Ram ventilation
Some fast-swimming fish, including tuna and sharks, use forward motion to push water over their gills. Buccal pumping and ram ventilation are ways of maintaining water flow, not different sources of oxygen. Do all fish get oxygen only through gills?
No. Most fish rely on gills, but some species also take in atmospheric oxygen. Gar and lungfish are examples identified by Virginia Tech. The extent to which a fish uses air as well as gills varies by species. [Iowa Department of Natural Resources]
Can the oxygen in a pond or aquarium change?
Yes. Photosynthesis adds oxygen during daylight, while fish, plants, and other organisms continue to respire. At night, when photosynthesis stops, dissolved oxygen can fall. This daily pattern is possible in ponds and tanks with plants or algae, but it is not guaranteed in every water body. [UF/IFAS Extension]
