A goldfish’s memory lasts far longer than three seconds. Studies have measured learned responses over minutes and found goldfish returning to a learned food location after six months. There is no single duration that applies to every kind of memory or every fish: the evidence concerns specific tasks, cues and training conditions.
Do goldfish really have a three-second memory?
No. The claim that goldfish forget everything after three seconds has no scientific basis in the evidence cited here. Goldfish can learn associations involving food, position and color, and can use environmental landmarks when navigating. How long a learned behavior persists depends on what was learned and how it was tested.
The clearest long-delay result in these sources comes from a maze project reported by the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH): trained fish found food in the maze after a six-month interval. That demonstrates retention of a particular learned task, not that every goldfish remembers every event for six months—or that six months is the maximum.
What does research show about how long a goldfish can remember?
The studies measure different forms of learning, so their results should not be collapsed into one universal memory span.

| Evidence | What was tested | Delay or duration | What the result establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riege and Cherkin’s controlled 1971 study in Science | 408 goldfish learned an avoidance response after a punished trial. | Changes were measured over minutes; avoidance later peaked at one hour. | A learned association can show a delayed response pattern beyond a few seconds. The result does not identify a maximum memory duration. |
| AMNH Young Naturalist maze project, publication year not stated on the page | 40 goldfish learned to find food in a maze, with food pellets as positive reinforcement. | Retests followed two, three, four and six months away from the task. | The report says fish retained the food-location task for at least six months. This was an educational project, not a large peer-reviewed lifespan study. |
| PeerJ exploratory study published in 2019 | Spatial learning in enriched versus impoverished aquaria. | Housing lasted 183 days. | Enriched-housed fish performed differently on spatial learning measures. The study does not establish a memory span of 183 days. |
How did goldfish perform in the six-month maze retest?
The AMNH report describes 40 goldfish trained in a food-reinforced maze for 28 days. The project used Omega 1 small fish food pellets as positive reinforcement. At the end of four weeks, average maze completion time was 17.21 seconds.
After the training period, fish were retested following absences of two, three, four and six months. The reported average food-finding times were:
Rank #2
| Time away from the maze | Average food-finding time |
|---|---|
| Two months | 36.35 seconds |
| Three months | 32.00 seconds |
| Four months | 29.85 seconds |
| Six months | 12.82 seconds |
The report compares the six-month retest average with 30.19 seconds on the final training day, 16 months earlier, and concludes that the fish retained the learned task for at least six months. Those figures describe the project’s reported results; they are not a guarantee for an individual pet goldfish. The report also excluded seven fish that did not meet its learning criterion, an important limit when interpreting the averages.
What kinds of things can goldfish remember?
Associations and avoidance
In Riege and Cherkin’s 1971 experiment, a single punished trial changed goldfish avoidance behavior. Avoidance declined during the first minute and then rose to a peak at one hour. The researchers interpreted this two-phase pattern as compatible with separate stages of memory formation. It shows that a learned association can change over time; it does not show how long the fish would retain it after a much longer interval.
Rank #3
Food locations and routes
In the AMNH maze project, fish learned to reach food, and the report observed both response strategies—such as making learned turns—and place strategies that used environmental landmarks. This distinction matters: a fish may remember a route or a location, rather than simply repeat one memorized sequence of turns.
Color, position and environmental cues
Goldfish can learn associations involving color and position as well as food and spatial landmarks. A test of one cue or task cannot, by itself, tell you how long a fish will remember a different cue or an ordinary event in its tank.

A 2019 exploratory PeerJ study housed goldfish for 183 days in enriched or impoverished aquaria. The enriched tanks included plants, shelter and water flow that allowed voluntary exercise. Fish in enriched housing showed significantly different spatial-learning performance and more telencephalic cells.
This supports offering a stimulating, species-appropriate habitat; it does not prove that enrichment adds a set number of months or years to memory. The study compared groups under particular housing conditions, not a guaranteed cognitive benefit from any one accessory or toy.

Why can’t anyone give one exact memory duration?
Memory is not one single behavior. A study might measure a short-delay avoidance response, a food-location task or spatial learning, and each test has its own cues, reinforcement and delay. Fish also differ in performance. A result from one task cannot set a universal cutoff for all memories.
Fish-cognition expert Culum Brown of Macquarie University told Live Science: “But whether goldfish memories last days, weeks, months or years, it’s safe to say they definitely last longer than 3 seconds.” This is expert commentary, not a measured endpoint showing that all goldfish remember a particular event for years. The sources cited here do not establish a maximum duration or prove that goldfish retain memories for life.
