There is no single number of “babies” for all fish. Depending on the species, a female may release eggs or give birth to live young, and the count can range from about 10 live young in one brood to several thousand eggs in one spawning event. For example, Kerala Agricultural University lists 10–100 young for several aquarium livebearers, while Tamil Nadu Agricultural University reports about 2,000–3,000 eggs from one female goldfish. These are species-specific examples, not a universal fish average.
Do fish lay eggs or give birth?
Both reproductive strategies occur in fish. Many species are egg layers: the female releases eggs and the male releases milt, often fertilizing the eggs outside her body. Eggs may be scattered, attached to plants or other surfaces, buried, guarded, or carried, depending on the species. The University of Florida IFAS describes these as distinct culture and breeding approaches (UF/IFAS; Tamil Nadu Agricultural University).
Livebearers use internal fertilization. In poeciliid livebearers, the male’s modified anal fin, called a gonopodium, transfers sperm; eggs develop inside the female and she gives birth to free-swimming young. Guppies, mollies, platies, and swordtails are familiar aquarium examples (UF/IFAS).
So “babies” can mean eggs, fry (newly hatched or born fish), or a brood of live young. Those units should not be treated as interchangeable.

How many live young do common aquarium fish have?
The following figures are reported ranges per female, generally referring to one livebearer brood. A range is not a guarantee for every individual.
| Species | Reproductive mode | Reported young per female | Reported gestation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guppy | Live-bearing | 20–100 | 21–35 days |
| Platy | Live-bearing | 10–100 | 28–42 days |
| Swordtail | Live-bearing | 20–100 | 28–42 days |
| Black molly | Live-bearing | 30–70 | 40–70 days |
These ranges come from Kerala Agricultural University’s breeding table, which attributes the figures to ICAR (2006) (Kerala Agricultural University). They describe the number of young in a brood, not necessarily the female’s production for an entire year.

Eastern mosquitofish
University of Florida IFAS reports that eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) generally produce about 40–60 offspring per brood, although broods as large as 350 have been documented. The species can produce broods throughout the year (UF/IFAS).
How many eggs can an egg-laying fish produce?
Egg counts can be much higher than the number of live young in a typical aquarium brood. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University reports that a female goldfish lays about 2,000–3,000 eggs; the same page says barbs can lay up to 250 eggs per female (Tamil Nadu Agricultural University).
Rank #3
“2,000–3,000” refers to eggs released, not to 2,000–3,000 surviving or hatched fish. Fertilization, hatching, disease, predation, water quality, and food availability can all reduce the number that reach the fry stage.
Does that number represent a whole year?
Not necessarily. A reported clutch, brood, or spawning event is a snapshot of one reproductive event. NOAA Fisheries explains that many subtropical fish spawn in multiple batches over an extended season. Estimating annual fecundity therefore requires both the number produced per batch and how often batches are spawned (NOAA Fisheries).

For a meaningful comparison, identify four things:
- the species;
- whether it lays eggs or bears live young;
- whether the figure is per brood, egg batch, or season; and
- whether the count refers to eggs released or young that are born or survive.
What this means for an aquarium
If a livebearer is about to give birth, separating the fry from adults may improve survival because adult fish can eat newborns. UF/IFAS describes a floating plastic basket with openings large enough for fry but too small for breeders as a refuge for eastern mosquitofish and other livebearing species (UF/IFAS). It is an optional setup for that situation, not a universal requirement for every aquarium.

No reliable worldwide average is established by these sources. Fish species differ too widely in reproductive mode, body size, spawning frequency, parental care, and survival. Averaging unrelated species—or combining eggs with live-born young—would produce a number that does not describe any particular fish.

The Bottom Line
Fish do not have a fixed number of babies: common livebearers may produce roughly 10–100 live young in a brood, while an egg-laying goldfish example is about 2,000–3,000 eggs per female. Always name the species and clarify whether you mean eggs, one brood, or production across a season.
