For ordinary home care, keep one betta fish per tank. Adult males should never be housed together, and a male and female should not share a tank except for closely managed breeding by an experienced keeper. Female-only “sororities” are described by some care guides, but aggression remains possible and there is no proven universal group size or gallons-per-fish formula that guarantees safety.
The safest number is one betta per tank
Bettas (Betta splendens) are territorial. When another betta is introduced, chasing, fin damage and severe injury can follow quickly; fights may be fatal. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine therefore gives the most conservative advice: bettas should not be housed with any other betta.
This recommendation also makes management simpler. A solitary fish has its own territory, food and hiding places, and illness or stress is easier to detect. If you want several bettas, use separate, fully equipped aquariums rather than dividing one tank informally or relying on a transparent divider that could leave fish constantly seeing one another.
What different combinations mean
| Combination | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Two adult males | Do not keep together | They are strongly territorial and may fight until one is injured or killed. |
| Male and female | Do not keep together for companionship | Breeding is the limited exception, and it requires experience, close supervision and additional tanks for separation. |
| Two or more females | Not a guaranteed safe arrangement | Some guides describe female sororities, but females can also fight and no validated maximum group size is established. |
| One betta with other fish | Case-by-case only | Compatibility depends on species, temperament, space and cover; a community tank is not automatically suitable. |
Why female sororities are a conditional exception
PetMD describes a female sorority as possible in an aquarium of at least 10 gallons with many hiding places. Petco recommends at least 15 gallons and numerous hiding places, while warning that females may fight when overcrowded. These different thresholds show that the advice is not a settled stocking standard.

Neither guide establishes a number of females that is universally safe, and neither can guarantee that a particular group will remain compatible. Individual temperament, aquarium layout and the ability to remove an aggressor all matter. For a beginner, a single female is the lower-risk choice.
If you attempt a female group
- Use the larger end of published guidance rather than treating 10 gallons as a guarantee; Petco’s published minimum is 15 gallons.
- Provide dense plants, caves and other visual barriers so fish can retreat from one another.
- Have a separate, heated and filtered tank ready before introducing the group.
- Watch for persistent chasing, torn fins, hiding, refusal to eat or abnormal breathing.
- Separate an aggressive or injured fish immediately; do not wait for a hierarchy to “settle” if damage is occurring.
How large should a tank be for one betta?
A practical target is a 5-gallon aquarium or larger. The University of Illinois recommends an individual 5-gallon glass or plastic tank or larger. PetMD lists 2.5 gallons as a minimum and describes 5–10 gallons as ideal. A minimum is not the same as a comfortable target: larger volume is generally more stable and gives a solitary betta room to swim and rest.

- ONLY COMPATIBLE with USA AQUEON tank size 20.25”x10.5”x12.6”. This WILL NOT FIT ANY other brand of 10 gallon tank. PLEASE check tank size before buying.
- Easy to install and maintain - No Suction Cups Required. An installation video link is provided on the instruction sheet.
- Made from a solid sturdy non toxic material.
- Adjustable sidebars. Slide the side bars OUT against the glass to remove gaps and slide up to fit under the rim.
- NOT suitable for reptile tanks unless siliconed in place. NOT suitable for separating shrimp, they will get through the holes. NOT suitable for bare bottom tanks. Substrate is needed.
Tank volume does not make multiple-betta housing safe. A 20-gallon tank can still produce fighting if incompatible bettas share it, while a smaller tank can still be unsuitable because it is difficult to heat, filter and maintain consistently.
Essential setup for a single betta
For one fish, prepare the aquarium before purchase and cycle it so beneficial bacteria can process waste. Core equipment identified in veterinary and care guidance includes:

- A heater and thermometer maintaining approximately 76–81°F.
- Conditioned tap water and a water-quality test kit.
- Plants, caves or other smooth hiding and resting places.
Test water regularly (PetMD recommends weekly testing) and perform regular partial water changes. Avoid replacing all water at once unless an emergency procedure specifically requires it, because abrupt changes can stress the fish and disrupt the aquarium’s biological stability.

Possibly, but this is a compatibility decision rather than a fish-per-gallon calculation. The CDC advises researching species compatibility and specifically notes that male bettas may fight. Tank mates must have compatible water conditions and behavior, and the aquarium must offer enough space and cover for the betta to withdraw. A betta that becomes aggressive, persistently hides or stops eating should be moved to a prepared separate tank.

The commonly repeated “one inch of fish per gallon” rule is a broad rule of thumb, not a validated formula for stocking bettas. It cannot override this species’ territorial behavior.
Breeding is not routine cohabitation
Introducing a male and female for breeding is a controlled event, not a way to keep a pair together. The Anabantoid Association of Great Britain and other specialist guidance treat breeding as an experienced-keeper activity requiring preparation and additional tanks. The fish must be monitored and separated when aggression or spawning behavior calls for it; after spawning, the female and later the young need separate management.

A simple decision rule
- If you are new to betta care, choose one betta and a cycled 5-gallon-or-larger tank.
- If you want more than one, plan separate aquariums, each with its own heat, filtration and maintenance.
- Consider a female sorority only if you understand the risks, use a generously sized, heavily structured aquarium and have an immediately available backup tank.
- Never rely on a gallon-per-fish calculation, a temporary container or the expectation that fighting will stop on its own.
