The commonly cited answer is 38 recognized true-piranha species. Those species are traditionally placed in four genera: Serrasalmus, Pristobrycon, Pygocentrus and Pygopristis. The number changes when “piranha” is used more broadly for close relatives, so any reliable answer must state its taxonomic scope.
What does “type” mean here?
“Type” is a conversational term. Biologists normally count species, while common names do not always follow firm taxonomic boundaries. A source may also count only currently accepted names, include disputed lineages, or use “piranha” for a wider evolutionary group. Those choices can produce different totals without anyone necessarily making a mathematical mistake.
The traditional count: 38 true piranha species
A 2019 review of piranha diversity reports Jégu’s (2003) estimate of 38 recognized piranha species. In that traditional usage, “true piranhas” are the primarily piscivorous members of four genera:
| Genus | Role in the traditional group | Species figure reported in the review |
|---|---|---|
| Serrasalmus | Largest traditional piranha genus | 24, with a historical estimate of perhaps 28 |
| Pristobrycon | Traditional piranha genus | 5 |
| Pygocentrus | Traditional piranha genus | 3 or 4 in the historical discussion |
| Pygopristis | Traditional piranha genus | 1 |
The genus figures above are historical estimates discussed by the review; they should not be presented as a new, definitive catalog. The headline figure is best stated as the conventional estimate of 38 true-piranha species, rather than as a permanent global total.

Why some sources give a larger number
Molecular studies have described a broader six-genus piranha-related clade. It retains the four traditional genera and adds:
- Catoprion: scale-eating (lepidophagous) fishes.
- Metynnis: predominantly omnivorous relatives.
Under this evolutionary definition, “piranha” is being used for a wider assemblage, not just the 38 piscivorous true piranhas. Research also distinguishes those 38 species from the much larger group commonly called pacus. Always check which genera a count includes before comparing numbers.

Piranhas are not the whole Serrasalmidae family
All true piranhas belong to the family Serrasalmidae, but the family also contains pacus and other related fishes. FishBase’s family summary, accessed September 28, 2026, lists 17 genera and 105 species for Serrasalmidae. That is a family-wide database snapshot, not a count of piranhas.
Calling all 105 species “piranhas” would therefore be incorrect. The family total is useful for understanding the broader lineage, but it answers a different question.

A current example of database variation
FishBase’s Pygocentrus listing, accessed September 28, 2026, displays four species:
- Pygocentrus cariba
- Pygocentrus nattereri
- Pygocentrus palometa
- Pygocentrus piraya
This is a dated database result, not proof that every taxonomist agrees on every species boundary. A 2019 molecular study notes that published delimitations of Pygocentrus nattereri have varied. Names, synonymies and accepted species can change as taxonomic evidence is reassessed.

How to evaluate a piranha species count
When two references disagree, compare four things:
- Scope: Does the source mean the traditional true-piranha group or a broader clade?
- Genera included: Are only Serrasalmus, Pristobrycon, Pygocentrus and Pygopristis included, or also Catoprion and Metynnis?
- Name treatment: Is the source counting currently accepted species, disputed lineages, or synonyms?
- Date: Is it a historical estimate from a publication or a current database snapshot?
For a present-day named-species list, identify the catalog or database used and the date it was accessed. That qualification matters because taxonomy is revised over time.
Where piranhas live
Piranhas are South American freshwater fishes. As a group, they occur in the Amazon, Orinoco, Guiana, Araguaia–Tocantins, Paraná–Paraguay and São Francisco basin systems. This is a group-level geographic summary; an individual species may occupy only one basin or a much smaller range.

So, how many types are there?
If “piranha” means the traditional true-piranha group, use about 38 recognized species in four genera. If a source uses the broader piranha-related clade, it is including additional relatives such as Catoprion and Metynnis. If it quotes 105, it is referring to the entire Serrasalmidae family, which includes pacus and is not a piranha-only total.
