Locality-specific averages reported for Rancho La Brea were about 40.9 kg (90 lb) and 41.6 kg (92 lb). These are fossil-based estimates, not weights measured from living animals, and they should not be treated as one exact weight for every dire wolf.
What was the estimated weight of a dire wolf?
A 2019 study summary reports an estimated body-mass range of 31.52–48.06 kg (about 69–106 lb) for Canis dirus. The same summary gives mean estimates of 40.89 kg (about 90 lb) for Rancho La Brea Pit 16 and 41.59 kg (about 92 lb) for Pit 23. It identifies those means as the highest among the La Brea localities it references. SciELO México, 2019
The figures describe estimates from fossil evidence. The available article summary does not establish that 31.52–48.06 kg is a measured minimum-to-maximum covering every dire wolf, so it is best understood as a reported estimate range rather than a definitive species-wide limit.
Were dire wolves heavier than gray wolves?
The comparison depends on which source and result are being described. Anyonge and Roman’s 2006 quantitative study says the mean body mass was comparable to that of living gray wolves, while larger dire-wolf individuals probably exceeded the gray-wolf body-mass range. A 2020 article discussing a dire-wolf fossil from northeastern China characterizes the Rancho La Brea animals as about 25% heavier than living gray wolves. That is the later article’s summary of the earlier findings, not wording that should be substituted for the 2006 study’s own description. Quaternary International article (2020)
Together, these accounts support a cautious conclusion: dire wolves were robust canids, and at least some individuals may have been heavier than modern gray wolves, but the evidence cited here does not justify a single precise weight comparison for every population or specimen.

Why do reported weights vary?
Dire wolves are extinct, so researchers estimate body mass from fossil material rather than weighing animals directly. Published figures can refer to different specimens, localities, or summaries of earlier work. The La Brea pit averages, for example, are locality-specific estimates; they are not interchangeable with a broad reported range.
The accessible summary of the 2006 study does not provide enough detail to reproduce its equations, sample size, or uncertainty intervals. The 2019 article’s available summary likewise does not establish its estimation method or sample sizes. Those details should not be inferred from the headline figures alone.

What did dire wolves look like compared with modern wolves?
The San Diego Natural History Museum describes dire wolves as similar in general appearance to modern wolves but heavier, with more massive jaws and teeth. Its guide reports that remains from more than 3,600 dire-wolf individuals have been found at Rancho La Brea. That large fossil collection helps explain why the site features prominently in discussions of dire-wolf anatomy and mass. San Diego Natural History Museum
