The fish is usually the least expensive part of ownership: Petco’s 2026 aquarium-cost guide estimates $248 or more upfront for a properly equipped 10-gallon freshwater aquarium, plus about $12–$15 per month. Prices vary by retailer, location, sales and availability, so use these as current ballpark figures rather than fixed quotes.
Betta fish prices by type
PetSmart’s current US listings place bettas into three broad price bands:
| Betta category | Examples listed | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Veiltail and crowntail bettas | $3.99 |
| Deluxe | Halfmoon, dragon-scale and crowntail bettas | $7.99 |
| Premium | Premium halfmoon, dumbo halfmoon, koi and other premium bettas | $19.99 |
Color, finnage, pattern and store availability can change the price. A higher purchase price does not mean the fish needs a different basic standard of care.
How much is a betta fish and tank?
A fish and an inexpensive container are not the same as a complete habitat. Petco’s 2026 estimate for a 10-gallon freshwater setup is about $248 or more before ongoing care. Its estimate includes the tank, stand, hood and light, filter, heater, substrate, plants, décor, water conditioner, beneficial-bacteria starter, thermometer, net, algae-cleaning tool, water-test kit, siphon and initial fish stock.

#1 Best Overall
- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
Petco specifically notes that a $99 starter kit rarely includes everything a fish needs to thrive. Check the contents of any kit line by line before treating its shelf price as your total budget.
What a responsible setup must include
- A secure tank with a cover or lid; bettas can jump.
- A heater and thermometer that can maintain stable tropical water.
- A correctly sized filter with gentle flow.
- Substrate, safe décor and plants that provide cover without sharp edges.
- Water conditioner for every batch of tap water.
- A test kit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH.
- A net, siphon or gravel-cleaning tool and an algae-cleaning tool.
- Betta food, with medication reserved for illness rather than routine feeding.
Choosing the tank size
PetSmart lists a 3-gallon minimum. PetMD’s veterinarian-reviewed guidance gives 2.5 gallons as a minimum and identifies 5–10 gallons as ideal for greater stability. A 5–10 gallon aquarium costs more to equip than a tiny container, but its larger water volume is less prone to rapid chemistry and temperature swings.

- HALF MOON AQUARIUM KIT: Clear plastic, half-moon-shaped front allows for unobstructed viewing.
- IDEAL FOR BETTAS: Bettas require minimal maintenance and make great species for beginners.
- MOVABLE LIGHT: Energy-efficient LEDs can be positioned to light tank from above or below.
- CONVENIENT FEEDING: Clear canopy has a hole to make feeding fish easy.
- PERFECT FOR BEGINNERS: Small aquariums like this 1.1-gallon tank are a great way to get started in the freshwater fishkeeping hobby.
| Habitat option | What the evidence establishes | Budget implication |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 gallons | PetMD’s stated minimum | Lower equipment volume, but less tolerance for water and temperature changes |
| 3 gallons | PetSmart’s listed minimum | Still requires a heater, gentle filter, lid, testing and conditioned water |
| 5–10 gallons | PetMD’s ideal range for stability | Higher setup cost, generally more forgiving water volume |
Do not use a bowl as a cost-saving substitute for a heated, filtered aquarium. The low container price omits the equipment that keeps water temperature and chemistry stable.
One-time and recurring costs
Upfront purchases
- Tank, cover, light and stand or stable support.
- Heater, thermometer and gentle filter.
- Substrate, plants and décor.
- Conditioner, beneficial-bacteria starter and a water-test kit.
- Net, siphon or scraper and algae-cleaning equipment.
- Initial food and the fish itself.
Monthly budget
Petco estimates $12–$15 per month for a 10-gallon aquarium. That allowance covers food, a share of filter-cartridge replacement, conditioner, electricity for the heater, filter and light, and medication. Actual spending varies with equipment efficiency, how often media is replaced and whether illness occurs.

A larger comparison
For context, Petco estimates a 29-gallon setup at $562 or more upfront and $21–$27 per month. A betta does not require a 29-gallon aquarium, but the comparison shows how tank volume and equipment affect the budget.
Care practices that protect your budget
Stable care helps prevent avoidable replacement and treatment costs. Bettas commonly live 3–5 years with proper care, so budget for several years rather than only the purchase day.

Male bettas are commonly kept alone. Community aquariums require careful compatibility monitoring, additional hiding places and a plan to separate fish if aggression or stress appears. Adding tank mates can therefore increase equipment, space and contingency costs; it is not a reliable way to make betta ownership cheaper.

What can make ownership cost more?
- Illness: Medication and additional water changes can raise the monthly budget quickly.
- Unstable water: Replacing dead livestock or correcting a failed setup costs more than routine testing and maintenance.
- Equipment failure: Heaters, filters, lights and thermometers eventually need replacement.
- Plants and décor: Live plants may need replacement or supplementary lighting; décor can break or become unsafe.
- Veterinary care: A fish veterinarian, where available, adds a separate and highly variable expense not included in Petco’s routine estimate.
A practical budget before you buy
For one betta in the US, plan for at least the following:
- Fish: $3.99, $7.99 or $19.99 at the PetSmart price points above.
- Setup: about $248 or more for the complete 10-gallon configuration estimated by Petco in 2026.
- Routine care: about $12–$15 monthly for that 10-gallon setup.
- Reserve: extra money for medication, replacement equipment and unexpected water-quality problems.
The economical choice is not the cheapest fish or the smallest container. It is buying the necessary equipment once, testing regularly and maintaining stable water throughout the betta’s expected 3–5-year life.
