These figures are general guidance, not a required target or a medical cutoff. Your cat’s usual routine—and any meaningful change in it—matters more than one exact number.
How many hours do cats sleep?
Healthy domestic cats commonly divide their rest into many periods rather than one long overnight sleep. PetMD (updated March 25, 2026) describes 12–16 hours per day as typical for cats. Cats Protection uses an approximate 12–18-hour range. Because the published figures are broad guidance rather than results from a defined population study, an individual cat can fall outside either range and still be normal.

Why cats sleep in short bouts
Cats often doze repeatedly through both day and night. VCA Animal Hospitals describes house cats as crepuscular: they tend to be most alert around dawn and dusk. That pattern is different from being strictly nocturnal. A cat can sleep for much of the afternoon and still become energetic in the evening or wake you before sunrise.
Some of a cat’s apparent “sleep” may be light dozing. During these rests, the cat may respond quickly to a sound, movement, a familiar voice, or the possibility of food. Longer, deeper periods are also normal.

Do kittens and older cats sleep more?
Kittens
Growth and development can leave kittens asleep for much of the day. PetMD reports that kittens may sleep up to 20 hours daily. The figure is a general possibility, not a schedule every kitten should meet. A kitten that wakes to eat, plays normally when awake, and is gaining strength is different from one that is difficult to rouse or seems weak.
Adult cats
Adult sleep varies with age, lifestyle, activity, environment, and health. An indoor cat with few demands may rest more than a highly active cat, but there is no single “correct” adult timetable.

Senior cats
Cats Protection says senior cats are likely to sleep more than average, and Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine notes that older cats tend to be less active and may sleep more. However, Cornell also warns that changes in activity, weight, or the ability to reach favorite places can reflect illness or dental problems. Do not dismiss a new pattern as inevitable aging.
How to tell whether your cat is sleeping too much
Count hours only as a rough reference. First learn what is normal for your individual cat: when they usually nap, how readily they wake, and what they do once awake. VCA recommends checking whether the cat still rouses for familiar stimuli such as a treat or a usual household sound.

A veterinary check is sensible when sleep increases markedly from your cat’s baseline, especially if the cat also hides more. Cats Protection specifically advises contacting a veterinarian for much more sleep than usual or increased hiding. Cornell recommends taking changes in health or behavior seriously rather than labeling them “old age.”
Changes to record
- How suddenly the sleep pattern changed and whether it persists.
- Whether your cat wakes for meals, treats, play, or familiar household activity.
- Appetite, water consumption, weight, grooming, litter-box habits, and mobility.
- Hiding, reduced interaction, reluctance to jump, vocal changes, or signs of pain.
Sleep duration alone cannot diagnose a condition. If the change is pronounced, continues, or comes with other symptoms, describe the pattern to your veterinarian instead of trying to identify the cause from sleep hours.

Where do cats like to sleep?
Cats often choose warm, comfortable, and secure locations, and they may switch places from one nap to the next. Cats Protection notes that some cats use a covered bed, while others prefer different resting spots. A purchased bed is optional; there is no evidence here that a particular bed increases total sleep.
Making resting places available
- Offer a quiet, draft-free location and let the cat decide whether to use it.
- Provide more than one style, such as an open cushion and a covered cat bed, if your cat enjoys choice.
- Keep any bed or blanket clean and place it where the cat can rest undisturbed.
- Do not force a cat into a bed or move a preferred resting place without a reason.
Is a sleeping cat actually nocturnal?
Usually, no. Cats are generally described as crepuscular rather than strictly nocturnal, with activity peaks around dawn and dusk. Their repeated naps allow them to be active at several times, so evening or early-morning play does not by itself indicate a problem.

If nighttime activity is new, unusually intense, or paired with confusion, vocalizing, appetite changes, or other behavior changes, mention it during a veterinary consultation.

A practical way to monitor sleep
- Establish a baseline: for several ordinary days, note approximate nap periods and when your cat is alert.
- Check responsiveness: observe whether familiar sounds, food, or gentle interaction produce the usual response.
- Record accompanying changes: include eating, drinking, weight, grooming, mobility, hiding, and litter-box behavior.
