Brush a longhaired Dachshund several times a week as a practical starting point. Brush daily if the coat is thick or tangles easily, and check the longer hair—especially around the legs—and the belly for knots or debris. The right schedule depends on your dog’s coat, not a single rule for every longhaired Dachshund.
How often to brush
Several brushing sessions a week is a reasonable baseline. Increase to daily brushing if you notice tangles forming, your dog has a particularly thick coat, or longer hair regularly collects debris.
Published guidance varies. The American Kennel Club says longhaired Dachshunds may need more frequent brushing depending on coat thickness. PetMD recommends brushing thoroughly at least several times a week, if not daily. Dachshund Health UK recommends regular grooming at least weekly, while the UK Kennel Club lists grooming more than once a week. The Dachshund Club of Queensland recommends daily brushing plus a more thorough weekly session.
Where to check for tangles
Give extra attention to the longer hair around the legs, where knots can form, and check the belly if it picks up dirt or debris. Brief, gentle checks between full brushing sessions can help you spot a developing knot early; brush more often if you find tangles. This is a practical routine based on coat thickness, tangling, and debris—not a fixed clinical schedule.

Which brushes and combs can help?
- Slicker brush: PetMD recommends this for detangling.
- Bristle brush: PetMD notes it can add shine; Dachshund Health UK recommends a bristle brush as part of regular grooming.
- Wide-toothed metal comb: Dachshund Health UK recommends this for grooming and working through tangles.
- Combination natural-bristle and nylon brush: The Dachshund Club of America handbook says this type of brush can remove dead hair and undercoat. Its Dachshund Handbook, revised July 2013, advises regular brushing to keep the coat in good condition.
When to ask a professional groomer
Get help from a professional groomer if a mat is difficult to detangle or you are unsure how to trim it safely. The Dachshund Club of Queensland notes that mats can be hard to distinguish from skin, so trimming close to the skin can be risky.
Brushing is separate from nail care
Brushing frequency is about the coat. The American Kennel Club separately recommends monthly nail trimming for all Dachshunds; that schedule is not a substitute for checking and brushing a longhaired coat.
