A weatherproof outdoor cat shelter needs more than a sturdy box: keep rain out, block drafts at the entrance, elevate it above damp ground, and use dry straw for bedding. A nested-tub design is a practical DIY option; a wooden shelter can be customized with a sloped roof and hinged access. The guidance below draws on Alley Cat Allies’ U.S.-oriented community-cat advice.

Choose a shelter design

A nested plastic-tub shelter is a straightforward choice if you can find two tubs that fit together. A wooden shelter takes more carpentry but allows you to customize its dimensions and roof. In either design, prioritize a dry interior, a protected entrance, stable elevation, and access for cleaning. Alley Cat Allies gives practical guidance, not tested thermal or rain-resistance ratings for these builds.

Nested plastic tubs

Alley Cat Allies’ plan uses a large lidded plastic tub of about 30 gallons and a smaller tub of about 20 gallons, along with straw, foam, and a plastic flowerpot to sleeve the entrance. These capacities are approximate: check that the smaller tub physically nests inside the larger one before cutting, since capacity does not guarantee compatible dimensions or shape. See Alley Cat Allies’ outdoor shelter build instructions.

Wooden shelter

For a wooden version, use screws to assemble the shelter, exterior paint to reduce weather exposure, and a sloped roof to shed water. A hinged roof makes inspection and bedding replacement easier. A flap or interior wind block can reduce drafts at the entrance. Alley Cat Allies outlines these features in its inexpensive cat shelter fact sheet.

Build a nested-tub shelter

Gather materials

  • A large lidded plastic tub, approximately 30 gallons
  • A smaller plastic tub, approximately 20 gallons, that fits inside the large one
  • A box cutter and marker
  • Straw, not hay
  • Scissors
  • A hair dryer
  • A thin slab of foam for the floor
  • A plastic flowerpot to use as an entrance sleeve

These are the materials in Alley Cat Allies’ plan; it does not specify universal tote dimensions or an insulation rating. Take care when using the box cutter.

Assemble the shelter

  1. Place the flowerpot against the side of the large tub and trace its outline to mark an entrance. Keep the opening cat-sized rather than making it larger than needed.
  2. Carefully warm the marked plastic with a hair dryer, then cut out the entrance with the box cutter.
  3. Lay the foam slab on the bottom of the large tub.
  4. Set the smaller tub inside the large one. Align the two tubs so the entrance openings can line up, then mark the smaller tub through the outer opening.
  5. Remove the smaller tub, warm the marked area, and carefully cut its entrance.
  6. Put the smaller tub back in place and add straw in the gap between the tubs.
  7. Add a generous, loose layer of straw inside the smaller tub.
  8. Fit the flowerpot through the aligned openings as an entrance sleeve, then close both lids.

Keep the inside dry and insulated

Use straw, not hay or fabric

Use dry straw as bedding. Alley Cat Allies explains that straw resists moisture, while hay can absorb it and become cold or moldy. Blankets and towels can also hold moisture, so they are poor choices for the main bedding in an outdoor shelter. Loosely pack straw to about one-quarter to one-half of the shelter’s interior. Read Alley Cat Allies’ straw-versus-hay bedding guidance and its outdoor shelter advice.

The grooves in the roof and the bottom match perfectly, it can be stacked into a multi-story cat house, saving space when there are two or more cats.

Replace damp or dirty bedding

Check bedding regularly and replace it sooner if it becomes wet, dirty, or degraded. Alley Cat Allies suggests refreshing straw in outdoor shelters every 3–6 months; treat that as a general interval, not a reason to leave damp bedding in place. Its community-cat guidance is available at How to Make the Perfect Community Space for Outdoor Cats.

Weatherproof the entrance and placement

Keep the shelter compact and the doorway protected

A compact space is easier to keep warm than an oversized one, especially when only one or a few cats use it. Alley Cat Allies offers roughly 2 feet by 3 feet and at least 18 inches high as general sizing guidance, not a universal standard; smaller shelters may retain warmth better when fewer cats use them. Its suggested entrance width is 6–8 inches. A flap or L-shaped entry can reduce wind exposure; without one, face the doorway away from prevailing wind or toward a wall. • WATERPROOF 3-LAYER CONSTRUCTION: Designed with a composite non-woven fabric top, 0.24" PP hollow board middle layer and thermal aluminum film bottom, this three-layer construction helps provide added protection from outdoor moisture, while the sloped roof helps rainwater run off rather than collect on top.
  • 2" ELEVATED DESIGN: Raised 2 inches off the ground, the cat house helps keep the resting space away from wet or dirty surfaces, providing added ground clearance for a cleaner resting area.
  • INTERACTIVE VIEW WINDOW: A clear window lets cats watch their surroundings while relaxing inside. The window also provides a way for owners to interact with their cats, while the versatile design works well on patios or in living spaces.
  • EASY TO CLEAN & CARE: Simply wipe the cat house surface with mild, non-abrasive soap and warm water, then allow it to air dry. The removable plush cushion can be machine washed and tumble dried on low heat for convenient routine cleaning.

Elevate and shelter it

Place the shelter on a stable, level base above cold or damp ground, in a quiet, sheltered location. Make sure it cannot rock or tip, and position it so wind and precipitation are less likely to blow directly into the entrance. For a wooden shelter, the sloped roof helps shed water; inspect the roof and joints for damage as part of routine checks.

Adapt the shelter to the season

In cold and snowy weather

Keep the bedding dry, maintain a protected entrance, and check that the doorway remains open after snowfall. Alley Cat Allies’ winter weather tips emphasize clearing snow from entrances after storms. An outdoor shelter is not a substitute for veterinary care or a temperature-controlled space for a cat recovering from surgery.

In warm weather

Place the shelter in shade. For hot-weather use, Alley Cat Allies suggests elevating it to improve air circulation and providing two openings so hot air can escape. Those are summer adaptations, not requirements for a winter shelter. See Alley Cat Allies’ summer weather tips.

Inspect it regularly

Check the shelter and its surroundings on a regular schedule and after severe weather. Look for wet or dirty bedding, damaged walls or roof, an unstable base, and an entrance blocked by snow or debris. Replace bedding as needed and keep the opening clear. Local building requirements and weather vary; no tested thermal rating or quantified rain-resistance figure is established for these DIY designs.
