A rabbit kit found alone is not necessarily orphaned. Wild rabbit mothers keep away from the nest much of the time and return briefly to nurse, so first check the kit and nest without disturbing them. Leave a healthy kit in an intact nest alone; reunite a healthy displaced kit with its nest if you can find it. Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or local wildlife agency promptly if the kit is injured, cold, weak, visibly unwell, or has been in a cat or dog’s mouth. Do not feed it or give it water unless a licensed rehabilitator specifically tells you to.
First, determine whether the rabbit needs help
This guidance is for a wild rabbit kit, such as a cottontail. Finding one alone—or not seeing its mother—is not proof it has been abandoned. Rabbit mothers limit visits to avoid drawing predators to the nest, and a person may simply miss the brief nursing visit. California Department of Fish and Wildlife says dependent baby rabbits rely on their mother for food, warmth, and survival during their first two weeks.
From a distance, check whether the kit is in a shallow nest lined or covered with grass and fur, and whether it appears warm, uninjured, and in good condition. Keep children and pets away. Avoid repeatedly handling the kit or standing near the nest.
What to do, based on the kit’s condition and location
Healthy kit in an intact nest: leave it there
Do not remove a healthy, uninjured kit just because its mother is not visible. Leave the nest undisturbed and keep pets and people away. If yard work or another immediate disturbance threatens the nest, reduce the disturbance and ask a local wildlife rehabilitator or wildlife agency for guidance.

Healthy kit outside the nest: reunite it if you can
If you can locate the nest, gently return the kit and lightly replace the natural grass, fur, or leaf covering. Human scent alone is not a reason to leave a kit separated: wildlife centers explain that mothers do not reject young simply because a person touched them.
To check whether the mother has returned, place a loose string or a few twigs in a simple pattern over the nest without blocking its entrance. Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University advises checking the marker after 24 hours. That is an observation instruction, not a universal cutoff for every situation. If the marker’s position is unclear, the kit looks unwell, or you cannot find the nest, contact a local rehabilitator for advice.

Injured, cold, weak, or declining kit: contact a professional promptly
Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or your local wildlife agency. A thin or poor body condition, coldness, weakness, visible injury, or signs of decline are reasons to seek help rather than wait to see whether the mother returns. Tell the professional about any known contact with a cat or dog. Even if you cannot see a wound, report the encounter and follow their instructions.
How to contain a kit while arranging help
Containment is conditional: do it if a rehabilitator or wildlife agency advises you to. Follow their directions about whether to move or transport the animal. If they tell you to contain it, place it in a secure, ventilated box or carrier in a quiet area away from pets and household activity. Minimize handling while you arrange professional help.

Do not offer food, milk, formula, or water unless a licensed wildlife rehabilitator specifically instructs you to. An inappropriate diet or feeding technique can seriously harm or kill a kit. Do not try to raise a wild rabbit yourself; rules on possessing or rehabilitating wild mammals vary by location, so ask your local wildlife authority about the applicable requirements.
Do not mistake a young rabbit for a newborn
Species and development matter. Cottontails are born blind and helpless in shallow ground nests. Hares are different: California Department of Fish and Wildlife says baby hares are born furred with their eyes open and rely on their mother for only the first two to three days. Do not apply the same age or size rule to every rabbit or hare.

A fully furred wild rabbit with open eyes and good mobility may already be independent. Tufts describes an independent rabbit as about four inches long, able to hop well, with open eyes and erect ears. This is guidance for recognizing a potentially independent animal, not a universal measurement threshold; if you are uncertain, ask a local rehabilitator. California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s advice, “Leave it there, if you care”! is specifically for a healthy, fully furred rabbit with open eyes or a healthy young hare—not a dependent newborn or an injured animal.
