To carve your dog or cat’s face on a pumpkin, turn a clear pet photo into a simple stencil, transfer its lines to the pumpkin, then cut through the rind in selected areas and scrape away the skin in others. The contrast between open cutouts and shallow etched sections helps the finished face read clearly. The method below follows the photo-stencil steps in Daily Paws’ guide, updated April 26, 2026.
Choose a photo and size the design
Pick a sharp, close-up image in which the ears, eyes, nose, and muzzle are easy to distinguish. A front-facing photo is often easiest to simplify, but another clear angle can work if the main features remain recognizable.
- Convert the photo to black and white and increase its contrast so the key facial shapes stand out.
- Measure the pumpkin’s usable, relatively flat area.
- Resize the image to fit that area without crowding the edges.
Turn the photo into a carving stencil
Trace the pet’s main outline and distinctive features onto tracing paper. Simplify small details rather than trying to reproduce every strand of fur. The design needs connected shapes that can survive being cut or etched into the pumpkin.
Mark two kinds of areas on the pattern: places to cut fully through the rind, and lighter details where you will scrape away only the outer skin. The through-cuts let light pass; the etched areas preserve more pumpkin and create a softer glow.

Prepare the pumpkin and transfer the pattern
- Clean out a real pumpkin and scrape the inner wall smooth behind the area where you will carve. A thinner, even wall is easier to work through.
- Tape the stencil to the pumpkin’s flattest surface.
- Prick along the pattern lines with a pin, toothpick, or pattern tracer. A small pattern tracer is commonly included in a pumpkin-carving kit, but a pin or toothpick can also transfer the design.
- Remove the paper and check that the dots form a clear outline. Re-prick any gaps before carving.
Carve the face in stages
Use a small-blade pumpkin saw for the sections that need to go all the way through. Work carefully rather than forcing the blade through the wall.
- Begin with the finer features, such as eyes or narrow spaces around the nose.
- Continue with larger cutouts and the outer outline.
- For lighter facial details, scrape away only the pumpkin’s outer skin; do not cut through the flesh.
Alternating open cuts with shallow etched areas gives the design different levels of light and helps preserve delicate details. Keep pets away from the carving area and sharp tools while you work. In its 2023 Halloween release, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that 55% of the injuries discussed were related to pumpkin carving; that figure concerns the injuries covered in the release, not pet injuries. The CPSC also advises using indoor or outdoor lights tested by a recognized testing laboratory. Read the CPSC’s 2023 Halloween safety guidance.

Use a ready-made pet stencil instead
If simplifying a photo feels like too much work, use a ready-made dog or cat design. Dremel’s 2024 stencil collection includes dog-face and cat-face patterns, while Trupanion’s stencil downloads distinguish between areas to cut through and areas to scrape. A custom photo stencil offers a more personal likeness; a ready-made pattern reduces the preparation needed. The cited sources do not compare the finished results of the two approaches.
