A dog with rear-leg weakness may need a different design from one that needs help at both ends. Ask your veterinarian or a veterinary rehabilitation professional which support is appropriate, then compare fit, handling, adjustability, cleaning and comfort. A harness can help with mobility; it cannot identify the cause of weakness or stumbling.
Start with where your dog needs support
Notice when and where your dog struggles, and describe those observations to your veterinary team. Weakness or stumbling in one or more limbs is a reason to ask for guidance rather than assume it is normal aging. A clinician can help determine whether a harness is suitable and which areas need assistance.
Support harnesses vary in configuration. Options to discuss include rear-support designs or slings, front support, and full-body designs that provide support at both the front and rear. Some full-body harnesses use separate sections that can be joined for combined support. The right configuration depends on your dog’s needs; these options are not interchangeable for every dog.
Compare harnesses by practical fit and use
Support location and configuration
Check which parts of the body the design supports and how that support is delivered. A product’s description should make clear whether it provides front, rear or broader front-and-rear support. Ask your veterinary professional whether that configuration suits your dog.

Fit and adjustability
Measure your dog using the points and method specified by the manufacturer. Charts differ between products, and a size label alone does not tell you whether a harness will fit. Compare all requested measurements with the current chart, including any overlapping ranges, and consider whether the adjustment points allow a secure, comfortable fit.
Putting it on and helping your dog
Consider how easily you can put the harness on and take it off, whether its handles or lifting strap are manageable for you, and whether toileting is practical while it is worn. Think about whether you can assist your dog without creating strain for yourself or placing undue stress on another part of the dog’s body. These are selection factors identified by veterinary rehabilitation clinician Tracie Grubb, DVM, CCRT, cVMA, rather than results of a comparative product trial. Grubb’s article on choosing a mobility harness also recommends consulting your veterinary or rehabilitation professional.

Cleaning, durability and comfort
Check how the harness is cleaned and adjusted, and whether its construction seems practical for regular use. Consider comfort as well as support: a design that helps one area should not create rubbing, pinching, chafing or discomfort elsewhere. Remove the harness when it is not being used, following the instructions for that specific product.
Measure carefully and check the fit each time
- Take the requested measurements. Follow the harness maker’s chart rather than estimating from your dog’s breed, weight or another product’s sizing.
- Try the harness according to its instructions. Adjust it for a secure, comfortable fit; do not assume that one manufacturer’s fitting rule applies to every design.
- Check your dog while it is worn. Look for rubbing, pinching, chafing or signs of discomfort, and check fit regularly as the manufacturer directs.
- Remove it when it is not in use. Follow the product’s wear and care instructions, and ask your veterinary team if you are unsure how to use it safely.
For example, PetSafe describes its CareLift Support Harness as a full-body aid for senior, recovering or disabled dogs. The manufacturer lists front and rear support, handles, a lifting leash, and a shoulder strap for medium and large sizes. Its published size ranges are:

PetSafe’s CareLift setup instructions say a snug two-finger fit should be possible between the harness and fur, warn that a loose fit can cause chafing, and advise checking fit often and removing the harness when not in use. Those directions are specific to CareLift; follow the instructions provided with any other harness.

Share what movements are difficult for your dog and ask which support configuration and use are suitable. Tracie Grubb’s guidance is direct: “Always consult your veterinarian and/or your rehabilitation professional for guidance.” A harness choice should be guided by your dog’s needs, not by age alone or by assuming that a product’s feature list establishes clinical suitability.
