For most adult aquarium fish, offer a small portion of species-appropriate food once a day and watch them eat. Stop before food is left to sink uneaten, and remove visible leftovers. The right routine depends on species, life stage, feeding behavior, and body condition; fry and some large-meal carnivores need a different schedule.
How often should you feed aquarium fish?
For most aquarium fish, once daily is a sensible starting schedule. The NSW Department of Education says once a day is usually sufficient and advises against feeding more than twice daily. Merck Veterinary Manual says most aquarium fish should be fed at least daily, with an exception for carnivores that ingest large meals. These are general guidelines, not a schedule that fits every species or age.

Adult community fish
Start with one feeding a day and adjust to the fish’s appetite, condition, and access to food. A second small feeding may suit some fish, but avoid adding meals simply because the fish appear eager; observed consumption and uneaten food are better guides.
Fry and small fish
Fry and smaller fish generally need smaller, more frequent meals than adults. Frequency also varies with species and temperature. Merck gives a veterinary maintenance benchmark of up to 5% of body weight daily for fry and fingerlings, compared with about 3% for adult fish; these are context-dependent feed-weight benchmarks, not scoop measurements for home aquariums.

Carnivores that eat large meals
Some carnivorous fish that ingest large meals may be fed once or twice a week, according to Merck. Do not apply that exception to all fish described as carnivorous: use guidance appropriate to the particular species and its feeding pattern.
How much food should you give?
There is no reliable universal pinch, scoop, or pellet count for every aquarium. The NSW guidance is to provide only what the fish can eat within a few minutes. A practical method is to begin with a small portion, observe the meal, and stop while the fish are actively eating—before food settles uneaten.

- Identify each fish’s species, adult size, life stage, and whether it is herbivorous, omnivorous, or carnivorous.
- Choose a food suited to that fish’s nutritional needs and feeding zone.
- Add a small first portion and watch which fish eat and how quickly.
- Stop adding food once the fish are no longer actively consuming it; remove visible leftovers.
- If food remains, reduce the next portion. Keep a simple log in a mixed tank of food type, approximate amount, time, refusals, and fish that are not getting access.
Merck’s approximate 3% of body weight daily for adult fish and up to 5% for fry and fingerlings come from veterinary maintenance guidance. They should not be treated as household portion rules: flakes and pellets differ substantially in weight, and the figures do not translate into one universal scoop. FAO pond-management guidance gives a ceiling of no more than 3% of total fish weight in a single feeding; that aquaculture figure is not a home-aquarium prescription.
How do you choose the right fish food?
Match food to species, life stage, particle size, and where the fish feed. Flakes and pellets are common manufactured foods; frozen foods or other supplements may suit particular species’ needs. A mixed tank may require more than one food type or format so every fish can eat.

- Tropical fish food that contains up to 40%, nutrient-rich Black Soldier Fly Larvae, the first ingredient
- High in multiple proteins like whole salmon – rich in Omega 3 and 6 for healthy skin, scales and fins
- Fortified with essential vitamins, amino acids and minerals for a balanced daily diet
- Slow sinking micro granule format (0.7-1mm) – all fish can feed at their preferred depth; feed as much as fish can eat in two minutes, two or three times daily
- Sustainably processed in small batches for quality control and maximum freshness
- Species and life stage: Check that the diet suits the fish’s feeding ecology and whether it is a juvenile or adult.
- Particle size: Choose pieces the fish can actually take and eat.
- Buoyancy: Floating, slow-sinking, and sinking foods reach different feeding zones. Surface, mid-water, and bottom-feeding fish may need different formats.
- Ingredients and freshness: Consider the food’s nutrient profile and condition; do not rely on a format name alone to judge suitability.
- Access in a community tank: Watch for shy fish or bottom feeders missing out while another fish takes the meal.
How can you tell if you are overfeeding?
Watch the aquarium as well as the fish. Uneaten food, persistently cloudy or dirty water, and a fish becoming excessively heavy are practical warning signs. Overfeeding is associated with health problems and dirty tank water. A fish monopolizing the meal is a separate cue to change how food is delivered so others can reach it.
Body condition can also reflect diet quality, not just quantity. University of Illinois veterinarian Judilee Marrow notes that obesity can result from overfeeding, an unsuitable diet, or a diet that lacks the diversity the fish would naturally eat.

How should fish food be stored?
Keep dry feed in a pest-proof container in a cool, low-humidity place. Heat and humidity speed degradation and increase the risks of mold, mycotoxins, and rancidity. Merck’s discard guidance is two months after opening for feed kept at room temperature, six months for commercial feed stored in a freezer, and one year for commercial frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, mysids, or glassworms. Do not refreeze thawed frozen food.
