How to Feed Soybeans to Fish Safely

Fish can eat heat-processed soybean meal as part of a complete diet, but raw soybeans and soybean meal alone are not suitable feeding plans.

Fish can eat soybean meal when it has been heat-processed and is part of a complete, species-appropriate feed. Do not feed raw whole soybeans, and do not use soybean meal as the fish’s only food. The clearest uses in the available guidance are formulated diets for warm-water fish such as tilapia, carp, and channel catfish.

Can fish eat soybeans?

They can use soybean ingredients in their diet, but the form and preparation matter. Raw or underprocessed soy contains trypsin inhibitors and lectins that can interfere with digestion and fish performance. The University of Georgia Extension explains that heat treatment reduces these antinutritional factors; excessive heat can also reduce the availability of some amino acids. FAO likewise reports that heating improves soybean meal’s acceptability and nutrient availability.

Choose toasted or otherwise heat-processed soybean meal, or a commercial aquaculture feed that lists processed soybean meal. Avoid raw whole beans and animal-feed material when you cannot verify how it was processed.

Why soybean meal cannot be the whole diet

Soybean meal is protein-rich: FAO’s technical reference gives a protein content of about 47–50%. But its amino-acid profile is not complete for many aquaculture diets; FAO identifies deficiencies in sulfur-containing amino acids and tryptophan. It therefore needs to be combined with complementary ingredients in a balanced ration.

#1 Best Overall
Hikari® Micro Pellets® Semi-Floating Fish Food for Small-Mouthed Freshwater Fish, 0.77 oz (22g)
  • Ideal For: Betta Fish, Tetras, Barbs and other small mouthed tropical fish.

UF/IFAS describes soybean meal as an excellent protein source, while cautioning that feeding only one type of food is generally not complete or balanced. A complete ration must be suited to the fish’s species and life stage, with appropriate protein, amino acids, energy, lipids, and vitamin and mineral sources.

How much soybean meal can go into fish feed?

There is no universal soybean-meal dose for fish. Inclusion depends on the whole formula and the fish being fed. University of Missouri Extension’s 2023 example grower diets contain the following soybean-meal proportions:

Channel catfish grower diet 44.1% University of Missouri Extension, 2023; share of the formulated diet
Tilapia grower diet 40.0% University of Missouri Extension, 2023; share of the formulated diet

These are formulation examples, not directions to scatter that percentage of soybean meal into a pond or to feed that share of a fish’s body weight. They do not establish a home recipe for other species, life stages, or ingredients.

How to prepare a homemade soybean-based fish feed

  1. Select a verified ingredient. Use heat-processed soybean meal intended for feed, and check its processing, freshness, and suitability for the fish species. If buying a commercial aquaculture feed, check that soybean meal is processed.
  2. Build a complete ration. Combine soybean meal with complementary protein and energy ingredients, lipid, and vitamin and mineral sources. Use a binder if the feed needs one. Formulation should match the species and life stage rather than relying on soybean meal alone.
  3. Grind and mix for the fish’s size. FAO’s farm-feed guidance describes grinding or crushing dry ingredients and mixing them into a balanced feed. Make particles and pellets small enough for the fish to eat, but avoid excessive fine dust: small particles dissolve and are lost into the water more readily.
  4. Form suitable pellets. Add water as needed to make the mixture workable and form sinking or floating pellets appropriate to the fish and feeding conditions. A pellet that does not hold together can release nutrients into the water before it is eaten.
  5. Offer a modest amount and watch the fish. Begin below the amount they can consume promptly, observe their response, and reduce or remove feed left uneaten. Adjust feeding to fish size, species, water temperature, feed type, and natural food availability.
  6. Store ingredients and finished feed properly. Keep them dry, cool, and protected from pests and rancidity. Discard feed that is moldy or stale.

How often and how much to feed

FAO gives an approximate general management guide of no more than 3% of total fish weight in one feeding. This is not a soybean-specific prescription or a fixed daily allowance. Feeding frequency and amount depend on fish size and species, temperature, feed type, and natural food availability. Use fish response as a practical check: uneaten feed is a reason to reduce the next offering or remove leftovers.

SoShrimp Snow Flake Shrimp Food Pellets
  • Promotes Biofilm --- The soybean hulls themselves aren't just the food. As the flakes sit in the tank, they become the perfect breeding ground for biofilm. Shrimp will continuously graze on this nutrient-rich microscopic growth for days.
  • Doesn't Pollute the Water --- Most shrimp foods will rot, foul the water, and cause dangerous ammonia spikes if left in the tank for more than a few hours. Snowflake food is an exception. It breaks down incredibly slowly and doesn't spoil easily.
  • The Perfect "Vacation" Food --- Because it doesn't pollute the water and provides a continuous grazing source via biofilm, you can drop a few pellets in the tank before leaving for a weekend trip, ensuring your shrimp have food the entire time you are away.
  • High Fiber and Protein --- The hulls provide an excellent source of dietary fiber, amino acids, and plant proteins that help with healthy molting and breeding.

Is soybean meal better than fish meal?

Neither ingredient is automatically better in every fish diet. Compare them as ingredients in a complete formulation, not as standalone foods. Relevant factors include protein and essential-amino-acid profile, digestibility, palatability and species response, processing needs, lipid and energy contribution, and how well the finished pellet stays intact in water. Cost and local availability also matter, as does the environmental load if feed is left uneaten.

Soybean meal is a useful protein ingredient in some warm-water fish diets, but its amino-acid limitations mean the formula must supply what it lacks. The best choice and inclusion level depend on the target species and the rest of the ration.

Which fish need extra care with soy-based diets?

Tilapia, carp, and channel catfish

The clearest examples in the cited guidance are warm-water farmed fish. The Missouri grower-diet examples above are specific to channel catfish and tilapia; they should not be treated as universal recipes even for those fish at other life stages.

Salmonids and marine fish

Use a species-specific formulation for salmonids and marine fish. Soybean products may present digestibility or palatability constraints, or gut effects, in these fish, so a warm-water diet example is not a reliable guide for them.

Tilapia fingerlings

A 2021 Nile-tilapia fingerling trial found no significant differences through 40% replacement of fish-meal protein under that trial’s conditions. Higher replacement reduced growth and feed-utilization measures. The result applies to the tested diet and fish, not automatically to every tilapia strain, life stage, or formula.
