How to Fish a Snake Fly in Rivers, Stillwaters and Saltwater

Start with an active retrieve, a low rod tip and the line that reaches the fish. Then adapt snake-fly tactics to river current, stillwater depth or the Tabory saltwater pattern.

Fish a snake fly as an active streamer first: cast to likely holding water, keep the rod tip low and pointed at the fly, and retrieve with steady strips, a swing or a pause. Then adjust speed, depth and cadence to the fish. “Snake fly” can mean a UK trout Snake Fly/Snake Bait or Lou Tabory’s saltwater Snake Fly, so choose your line and presentation for the pattern, water and target species.

Identify the snake fly you have

The name covers substantially different streamers. A UK Snake Fly or Snake Bait is a large, mobile trout fly used in rivers and stillwaters. Lou Tabory’s Snake Fly is a saltwater pattern associated with species such as striped bass. A commercial Snake Bait Natural may be marketed for both river and stillwater fishing. Their buoyancy, hook arrangement and casting behavior can differ, so do not assume that advice for one version transfers unchanged to another.

Choose the line and leader

Fishing situation Starting line What it does
Surface or shallow water Floating Keeps the fly high and makes a surface-adjacent retrieve possible.
Just below the surface Intermediate Helps the fly track lower and reduces the tendency to ride on top.
Deep river slots, drop-offs or stillwater fish Sinking tip or sinking line Gets the fly down before or during the retrieve; sinking speed determines how quickly it reaches depth.

Use a single-fly setup and a leader strong enough for the fly’s weight, its hook configuration and the fish you are targeting. The primary instructional sources do not establish one universal pound-test value, and local regulations may limit leader, hook or fly arrangements. Large snake patterns also cast differently from ordinary trout streamers: slow your casting stroke, open the loop and avoid false casting a heavy fly close to other people.

River method: cover water, then change the presentation

  1. Pick a lie. Start at a bank, seam, pocket, undercut, structure edge, drop-off or other place where a fish can hold while watching prey.
  2. Cast across or about 45 degrees downstream. Keep the rod tip low and pointed toward the fly so you feel contact and do not lift the fly unnecessarily.
  3. Begin with steady strips. Six-inch strips are a useful baseline. Let the current swing the fly when the water’s speed is already providing movement.
  4. Control depth. If the fly rides too high, cast farther upstream, add a mend, or change to an intermediate or sinking-tip line. A mend changes the line’s angle and therefore how long the fly swims before it reaches you.
  5. React to follows. For a fish that follows without taking, try a slower or more erratic retrieve and add a brief pause. If it still refuses, cover a new lie rather than repeating the same cast indefinitely.
  6. Adjust for difficult water. In high or dirty water, keep the fly moving enough to be detected but slow the retrieve so a fish has time to intercept it.

When to swing, strip or dead-drift

A strip retrieve gives you direct control and is a good first test. A swing lets current move the fly across a lie and can draw a take at the end of the drift. A dead drift can work when fish are unwilling to chase, provided you maintain enough contact to detect a take. These are presentation changes, not different flies; test them before abandoning a productive pattern.

Stillwater method: find the depth and cadence

Begin with a line that places the fly where the fish are holding. If they are deeper than the fly’s current track, a sinking line is the straightforward correction.

  1. Cast toward a bank, point, weed edge, drop-off or visible shoal rather than fishing featureless water at random.
  2. Start with a continuous roly-poly retrieve to give the mobile fly a consistent swimming action. This can be effective when trout are actively feeding, including warmer summer and autumn conditions.
  3. Change to a medium or fast figure-eight retrieve when fish follow but do not commit. Insert occasional pauses; the change in speed and direction can turn a follow into a take.
  4. Repeat the alternatives on the same day. Wind, light, water temperature and the fish’s mood can make yesterday’s winning cadence ineffective.

Saltwater: fishing the Tabory Snake Fly

Lou Tabory’s Snake Fly is a different pattern from a UK trout Snake Fly. Orvis describes floating or intermediate lines for a near-surface track and sinking-tip lines when the fly must run lower. The bulky profile comes from ostrich herl, marabou and a spun deer-hair head; it is particularly associated with striped bass when mullet are present.

Use the named pattern rather than substituting materials casually. A commonly published recipe uses a Mustad C68SZ size 2/0 hook, white ostrich herl, silver Krystal Flash and Flashabou, white marabou, spun deer hair, heavy UTC thread and Zap-A-Gap. Match the retrieve to the water: steady strips search a shoreline or surf edge, while pauses and depth changes help when fish are following short.

Read the fish’s response

What you see First adjustment
Follow to the rod tip Slow the retrieve, add an erratic pause or change depth before changing flies.
Boil or swirl behind the fly Keep contact, vary strip length and try a short pause; avoid immediately speeding away from the fish.
Short takes Check that the fly is not moving too fast and that the line is not creating excessive slack. A stronger, correctly matched leader helps control a large pattern.
No interest after several presentations Move to new water, then reassess depth and retrieve. Persist longer only when cold, dirty or otherwise difficult conditions make fish less willing to move.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Fishing too high: cast more upstream, mend, or use an intermediate or sinking-tip line.
  • Using one speed all day: alternate steady strips, six-inch strips, swings, pauses, roly-poly and figure-eight retrieves.
  • Holding the rod high: lower the tip toward the fly to improve control and take detection.
  • Repeating an unproductive cast: cover a small number of presentations efficiently, then move to the next likely lie.
  • Treating every snake fly as identical: confirm whether it is a trout Snake Fly/Snake Bait, an articulated or buoyant variant, or the Tabory saltwater pattern before selecting tackle.

A practical starting plan

For a river, use a floating or intermediate line, cast across or slightly downstream, and begin with six-inch strips while the rod tip stays low. For a stillwater, select the line for the fish’s depth and test roly-poly against figure-eight retrieves. For the Tabory pattern in saltwater, start near the surface with floating or intermediate line and move to a sinking tip when fish are holding lower. In every case, change one variable at a time—retrieve, pause, depth or position—so the fish’s response tells you what helped.
