Coho fly fishing changes with the water: in rivers, target slower holding water and swing or strip a streamer through it; in saltwater, look for actively feeding fish and match your fly’s depth to the bait they are chasing. A 7- or 8-weight with floating line is a practical Southcentral Alaska river starting point, while saltwater setups commonly use 6- to 8-weight rods and either floating or fast-sinking line.
Choose a setup for the water you’re fishing
There is no single coho rig for every river and marine fishery. The guidance below is regional: Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) describes a Southcentral Alaska river setup, while Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) covers saltwater presentations. Adjust for local conditions and the depth of the fish.
| Water | Rod | Line and leader | Fly approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Southcentral Alaska rivers, ADF&G guidance | 7- or 8-weight | Floating line for most situations; 10–15 lb leader | Streamer patterns, including leech-style flies |
| Saltwater, WDFW guidance | 6–8 weight, with a reel that has a decent drag | Floating or fast-sinking line, selected for feeding depth | Baitfish imitations; weighted flies can help reach fish |
These are starting points, not universal requirements. ADF&G stresses that conditions at a particular stream, river, or lake matter more than tackle alone. For a river outing, bring a floating line and leader in the agency’s suggested range, then select streamer size and weight to suit the water. For saltwater, choose line by where the fish are feeding rather than assuming one line type will cover every depth.
Find coho holding water in rivers
Look for places where fish can pause out of the strongest current. Riffle ends, side channels, sloughs, back eddies, shaded banks, cut banks, and pools with reduced flow are useful areas to inspect. Coho may shift their activity with water temperature, light, conditions, and fishing pressure, so a promising-looking lie is not a guarantee that fish will take a fly.

Work likely holding water methodically instead of repeatedly casting to the same patch with an unchanged retrieve. If there is no response, vary the fly’s depth, speed, or action before moving on.
Present a river streamer
- Cast upstream and across. Place the fly so it travels through the likely holding zone rather than landing directly on top of a fish.
- Let it sink toward fish level. Allow the fly to descend as it moves toward the holding water; adjust fly weight or presentation if it is passing above the fish.
- Strip with movement and pauses. Short strips with pauses make the fly move and flutter as it swings or travels through the lie. Stripping as it sinks can add action during the approach.
- Change one variable at a time. Try a different depth, retrieve pace, or fly before abandoning water that still appears likely to hold fish.
ADF&G names Egg-sucking Leeches, String Leeches, and Dolly Llamas in black, pink, chartreuse, or purple for its Southcentral Alaska river guidance. In estuaries and tidewater, it also mentions small shrimp or pink wog patterns; those are a separate option from its river streamer examples.

Find and fish coho in saltwater
In marine water, focus on signs of feeding rather than searching only for resting lies. Coho chasing baitfish near the surface may show as splashes, with working birds and tide rips offering additional clues. When fish are feeding deep, choose a line and fly weight that can reach them.
WDFW describes baitfish patterns in chartreuse and white or pink and white, with streamer lengths of 2–5 inches. Use a floating line when fish are near the surface or a fast-sinking line when they are feeding deeper; weighted flies are another way to get a presentation down. A 6–8 weight rod and reel with a decent drag are the agency’s saltwater guidance. Rinse saltwater gear with fresh running water after fishing.

- NOAA Fisheries’ coho information notes that recreational rules vary by area. It also describes adipose-fin-clipped hatchery coho in Washington, Oregon, and the Columbia River; whether a fish may be kept or must be released still depends on the applicable local rules.
- ADF&G’s sport fishing information is a starting point for Alaska rules; check the specific water and any current notices.
- In British Columbia, federal regulations define fly fishing as angling with a line to which only an artificial fly is attached, and the definition of “artificial fly” differs between tidal and non-tidal waters. Consult the applicable rules for the destination rather than treating that definition as universal.
