Cat urine smell can survive an ordinary wash because it is often trapped in seams, elastic, padding, or the filling of bedding. The most dependable approach is to rinse the item, treat it with a fabric-safe enzymatic pet-urine cleaner, wash it according to the care label, and keep it out of the dryer until the odor has completely disappeared.
Do not add a heavily soiled item straight to a normal laundry load. Heat can set any remaining odor, and ammonia-based cleaners or bleach can create additional problems.
The reliable method for clothes, sheets, and washable blankets
- Separate the item. Put urine-soiled clothing or bedding in a washable container or separate laundry bag. Do not mix it with clean laundry.
- Rinse with cool water. Rinse the affected area from the back of the fabric where possible. Blot or gently squeeze out excess liquid; do not scrub, since scrubbing can push urine farther into the fibers.
- Apply an enzymatic cleaner. Choose a pet-urine enzyme cleaner specifically labeled for washable fabrics or laundry. Test it first on a hidden part of the item. Treat all affected areas, including the reverse side if the fabric is saturated.
- Give it the stated contact time. Enzymatic products need time to break down odor-causing residue. Do not rinse the product away immediately unless its label instructs you to do so.
- Wash with regular detergent. Use the warmest temperature permitted by the care label. A cool-water rinse or presoak before the main wash can help remove urine, but “always wash in cold water” is not correct for every fabric.
- Check the smell while the item is still wet. If you can still smell urine, repeat the enzyme treatment and wash. Do not put the item in the dryer yet.
- Air-dry completely. Hang or lay the item out until the smell is gone. Dryer heat can set residual urine odor and make another treatment less effective.
Prompt treatment is preferable to waiting. Dried urine is harder to remove, and a cat may be encouraged to use the same place again if it can still detect its scent.
How to treat fresh cat urine on clothing and sheets
For a fresh accident, remove the item as soon as you notice it and rinse the affected area with cool water. Check more than the obvious wet patch: urine may have reached a waistband, cuff, seam, elastic section, mattress protector, or the underside of a sheet.

After rinsing, apply the enzyme cleaner generously enough to reach the contaminated fibers. Wash the item separately or with other urine-soiled items. When the cycle ends, smell it before drying. If the odor is faint when wet but returns as the fabric dries, treat and wash it again rather than using heat to finish the job.
Getting urine smell out of comforters, duvets, and thick bedding
Thick bedding needs extra care because urine can soak through the cover and into the filling. Start by checking the care label and the manufacturer’s instructions. A “dry-clean-only” duvet, comforter, or blanket should not be saturated with a household enzyme spray unless the manufacturer or cleaner confirms that it is suitable.
- Confirm that your washing machine is large enough for the item. An overcrowded drum prevents the cleaner and detergent from rinsing through the filling.
- Locate the full contaminated area, including the underside and any padding beneath it.
- Pretreat or presoak with a fabric-safe enzymatic cleaner if the product label permits it. The treatment must reach the contaminated layer, not just the outer surface.
- Wash using the warmest care-label-approved setting and normal laundry detergent.
- Use an extra rinse if the bedding still contains cleaner or has a lingering smell.
- Air-dry thoroughly. Large items may need more than one drying period, and professional laundering may be necessary.
Do not dry a comforter simply because the outside feels clean. Smell the filling, seams, and backing as it dries. If those layers still smell after repeated enzyme treatment, professional cleaning or replacement may be more practical.

What removes cat pee odor—and what does not
| Product or method | How to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Enzymatic pet-urine cleaner | Use a product labeled for laundry or washable fabric and follow its contact-time instructions. | Test for colorfastness first; not every product is suitable for every textile. |
| Regular laundry detergent | Use it in the main wash after pretreatment. | Detergent alone may clean the fabric without fully neutralizing urine odor. |
| Baking soda | It can be added to a regular wash as an optional deodorizing aid. | It is not a substitute for enzyme treatment when the odor persists. |
| Vinegar | Do not make it the primary treatment for cat-soiled items. | Cornell advises avoiding vinegar-based cleaners in cat-soiled areas because the smell can resemble urine and may irritate cats. |
| Fabric softener or fragrance | Not recommended as an odor solution. | It may mask the smell temporarily instead of removing the residue. |
Never use ammonia or mix cleaners
Avoid ammonia-based cleaners on cat-urine contamination. Cat urine contains ammonia-related odor compounds, and an ammonia-like smell may make the location more attractive for repeat urination.
Never mix bleach with urine, ammonia, or any other cleaning product. The combination of bleach and ammonia can produce dangerous irritating gases. Bleach can also discolor or damage fabric, and it does not reliably neutralize cat urine odor. If you use any product, follow its label and keep the area ventilated.
If the smell survives washing
A persistent smell does not always mean the laundry cycle failed. The urine may still be in a hidden layer, or another contaminated object may be the source.

- Reapply the enzyme cleaner and allow the full label-directed contact time.
- Inspect padding, insulation, seams, elastic, blanket backing, and the underside of the item.
- Check the laundry hamper, washer gasket, laundry basket, mattress protector, and nearby floor.
- Clean the washing machine according to its manufacturer’s instructions if urine-soiled items were washed in it.
- Use a larger washer or professional laundry service for bulky bedding.
- Consider discarding an item if its filling or insulation still smells after repeated, correct treatment.
Mattresses, pillows, and upholstered headboards are not ordinary laundry. Blot fresh urine first, then use an appropriate enzyme cleaner deeply enough to reach the contaminated area and let it dry completely. Several applications may be needed. Follow the product directions and avoid soaking materials that cannot dry safely.
Why the cat keeps returning to the same spot
Cleaning the item is only half the solution. Cats may return to an area if they can still detect their own scent. Thorough odor removal helps, but inappropriate urination can also be linked to a litter-box aversion, stress, changes at home, or a medical problem.
If a cat suddenly starts urinating outside the litter box, arrange a veterinary check rather than assuming it is simply misbehavior. Keep litter boxes clean, provide suitable box locations, and look for recent changes such as a new pet, household disruption, altered litter, or conflict between cats.

Can I put cat-pee clothes straight in the washing machine?
Separate the item first and rinse the affected area with cool water. Pretreat it with a fabric-safe enzymatic pet-urine cleaner, allow the stated contact time, and then wash it according to the care label.
Should I use hot or cold water for cat urine?
Use cool water for the initial rinse or presoak, then wash at the warmest temperature allowed by the fabric-care label. There is no single safe temperature for every garment or type of bedding.
Best Value
- 1 gallon bottle of multi-purpose enzyme cleaning solution for a wide variety of surfaces and environments – use on carpets, furniture, hardwood, tile, drains, liter boxes, garbage cans, RVs and more
- Breaks up complex organic proteins, pet smells and stains, grease, oils, and more for effective results
- Powerful enzymatic formula removes stains and odors deep in the carpet
- Attack grease, fats and other organic matter that cause slow drains and unpleasant odors - not effective on bathroom clogs due to hair like a hazardous caustic drain opener
- Non-corrosive, non-flammable, non-acidic, and non-caustic with a fresh mint scent
Can I dry bedding after one wash if it still smells slightly?
No. Air-dry it instead and check the odor as it dries. If any urine smell remains, repeat the enzyme treatment and wash before using a machine dryer, because heat can set residual odor.
Is vinegar safe for removing cat urine smell?
Diluted vinegar is not generally dangerous when properly rinsed, but it is not the best primary treatment. Cornell advises avoiding vinegar-based cleaners for cat-soiled areas because the smell may resemble urine and can irritate cats. Use a fabric-safe enzymatic cleaner instead.
The Bottom Line
Rinse cat-soiled clothes or bedding with cool water, treat them with a fabric-safe enzymatic urine cleaner, wash at the warmest care-label-approved temperature, and air-dry until the smell is completely gone. Never use ammonia-based cleaners, never mix bleach with urine or other cleaners, and do not use the dryer while any odor remains.
