Give your new cat a quiet place to settle, let them decide when to approach, and make time together feel safe and rewarding. A cat who hides or keeps their distance is not necessarily rejecting you; they may need space to adjust. There is no universal timetable for trust, so follow your cat’s cues rather than trying to speed up affection.
1. Set up a calm home base
Start your cat in a quiet room where they can explore without having to manage the whole home at once. Give them accessible food, water, a litter box, and a comfortable place to rest, along with safe hiding options at floor level and higher up. The ASPCA recommends a small, quiet room and places to hide for cats who are feeling uncertain: Undercover Cats: Who They Are and Why They Need Us.
Keep food and water dishes separate from the litter box. Cornell’s Choosing and Caring for Your New Cat also recommends a veterinary check soon after adoption. Familiar essentials in a predictable, quiet space give your cat room to settle without requiring interaction.
2. Let your cat choose the pace
Sit quietly nearby and let your cat decide whether to come closer. Avoid reaching into a hiding place, pulling them out, or insisting on petting. If they approach, offer a hand for them to investigate and keep contact brief at first. Stop if they turn away or retreat.

The ASPCA’s advice is direct: “Allowing your Undercover Cat to choose when and how they interact with you will help them learn to trust you.” A cat who watches from a hiding spot is still getting used to your presence; they do not have to accept touch to make progress.
3. Make your presence predict good things
Offer a small, suitable treat or a meal while you sit nearby, without using food to lure the cat into a corner or force them to accept touch. Leave the reward within comfortable reach and let your cat decide whether to take it. Treats should fit their dietary needs and be a modest part of their overall food.

In the ASPCA adoption story Shy Cat Blossoms with the Help of a Devoted Adopter, adopter Sa’Haara described treats as one part of bonding with Hazel. That is an individual experience, not proof that every cat responds to food: some cats may prefer space or play, and some may not want a treat when they are anxious.
4. Invite safe, enjoyable play
Try a short play session with a toy your cat can chase or bat at while keeping a comfortable distance from you. An interactive wand toy can help you invite play without reaching toward a wary cat, but it is optional; Cornell notes that simple items such as boxes, paper bags, and ping-pong balls can also entertain cats.

Choose toys that are sturdy, supervise play, and stop when your cat loses interest. Cornell’s Safe Toys and Gifts cautions against toys with detachable small parts or string-like pieces that a cat could swallow. It describes toys as a way to encourage exercise and cognitive enrichment while strengthening the bond you share.

Let your cat’s response guide what you try next. If they stay nearby during a quiet visit, offer another calm visit later. If they engage with a toy, keep play short and end while it is still going well. If they retreat, give them space. Voluntary interaction matters more than how much contact you can get in one sitting.

There is no source-backed number of days or weeks by which a new cat should trust you. In one ASPCA story, Hazel reached a notable milestone after three weeks; another, Homer’s Odyssey to Finding the Home of His Dreams, describes hiding for weeks and progress over more than a year. These are individual stories, not a schedule to expect. The ASPCA behavior specialist who worked with Goose noted that he was not interested in food or play during one interaction, a reminder that even familiar approaches will not suit every cat at every moment.
